From the Principal 2017 Internal Audit Results

The Internal Audit Branch is established within the department as an independent appraisal function to evaluate the internal operations of schools. Last

term, our school took part in the Internal Audit process. Our school’s internal controls and finances were audited and we were very pleased to again

receive an ‘Effective’ rating. This rating is the highest rating achievable. I would like to congratulate Kylie Fry for her hard work in the office and all of

our staff for ensuring that we are following the processes and protocols to the highest standard. I would also like to acknowledge the diligence of our

P&C in keeping the appropriate records, as this is also part of the Audit. Congratulations Mount Kilcoy!

Welcome New Staff

We have had some staff changes this term. I would like to officially welcome the following new staff members to the Mount Kilcoy Teaching Team - Mrs

Chelsea Gauld, Mrs Deirdre Reynolds and Mr Rod Dann. Chelsea has taken on the role of being our Library and Health teacher after Mrs Wilma Bell’s

retirement last term. Deidre Reynolds will be co-teaching in the year 1 room while Miss Kris Breen is on maternity leave and Rod will be teaching the

year 6 class later in the term when Mr Triggs is on Long Service Leave. Also this term, Mrs Kylie Fry has taken on the role of BSM at Kilcoy State High

School for the first four weeks and Mrs Tanille Gauld has come across from the high school to take on Kylie’s position of BSM at Mount Kilcoy State

School. By working together in our Kilcoy cluster of schools, we are able to give our staff this great opportunity to work above level and build their ca-

pacity and knowledge.

Building Resilience in Children

We all can experience day to day stress in our lives and so do our children. The mental health of children and young people is a growing concern and

this concern can often be observed in our schools. Children are often faced with daily hurdles and stressful situations, such as taking tests, completing

assignments with deadlines, making new friends, being hurt by what others say or do and many more. Developing resilience and self-confidence can

help children work through these challenges. Developing resilience assists children to confidently face unfamiliar or sometimes tough situations by

helping them to strive to find a good solution in a confident manner. I found some great tips for helping children to build resilience at the following links:

NAPLAN

This term, students in years 3 and 5 will participate in National testing in Numeracy and Literacy. Across this semester, students have received addition-

al support in individualised areas to help them achieve to their full potential. Students will also participate in practice tests to ensure they are familiar

with testing conditions. They may also receive practice questions for homework. The tests will be conducted on Tuesday 9, Wednesday 10 and Thurs-

day 11 May. Please encourage your child to do their best. Extra sleep and a nutritious breakfast will be beneficial for your child during this week. If you

have any questions or concerns regarding National Testing, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.

Prep News Dear Parents,

Welcome to Term 2.

I hope you all have had a lovely Easter break and it is great

to see the children excited to come back to school.

Congratulations to all the Prep students for a huge effort in

their first Cross Country race. Super effort!!

This long weekend we have the Kilcoy Show, so if you get a

chance, have a look at your child’s art work on display.

We will be starting some new things for homework this term

and a number of sheets have been glued into the students

homework books. The homework sheet will be given out on

a Monday and marked on a Friday. The home readers will

be changed twice a week. This is to allow a couple of read-

ings of the book to develop confidence and one-to-one

matching of words. The pink word sheet is a list of words the

students are to learn fluently, which means being able to

read and write them quickly without hesitation. The Sound

Book will also continue. Please ensure all homework folders

and contents are brought to school each day.

The following is a brief outline of some of the curriculum

program for this term.

In Science, we will be learning about materials and their

properties. We will be conducting experiments to explore

materials and their usefulness and why we choose certain

materials when making objects. The students will then be

designing and making an object from their own choice of

materials at school. Please start collecting some little mate-

rials that can make a noise eg. bells, shells, little metal

tubes, metal skewers, old spoons, forks, CDs, etc.

Phonics- I’ve been very impressed with the children learn-

ing their sounds and actions. We have begun learning a

new sound every second day as the children are ready.

Please continue the great work of revising these sounds

each night as this will help the students be able to hear and

record the sounds in their writing.

In English, the children will be exploring books and learning

about how to retell the events of a story in sequence. This

will start as acting out stories or sequencing pictures to

building to an oral presentation of a story.

I am looking forward to the learning journey of this term and

celebrating the discoveries made along the way.

Year 1 News

Welcome back to Term 2.

What a busy term awaits us! We have hit the ground running getting all areas underway.

This term in English, we are looking at how characters are created in texts. We are looking at basic gram-mar, including nouns, verbs and adjectives. The chil-dren are very confident with the features of sentences and have begun to apply these in their writing tasks. As we build this skill, and begin to construct more texts, the application of this knowledge in writing tasks will become easier.

In Maths, we are looking at patterning, continuing with number, building place value knowledge of tens and ones, and counting. We are counting forwards and backwards in 1s, counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

Homework this term will continue in the same format as term 1 with the inclusion of number facts. The importance of completing these tasks isn’t just about a weekly spelling or number facts test. Homework builds other life skills such as meeting deadlines, building responsibility and in general setting good habits for future schooling years. Nightly reading is instrumental in developing read-ing skills and we appreciate the time parents invest in supporting their children’s reading homework.

Year 2 News

Welcome back to Term 2! I hope you had a lovely Easter

break. It was fantastic to see the children so excited to be

back at school for another busy term!

Congratulations to all the students who participated in the

Cross Country. It was a great way to start the term and

fantastic to see the sportsmanship displayed by the stu-

dents.

This term in English, we are exploring and comparing

characters in narratives. For our assessment, the stu-

dents will compare characters in two versions of the same

story and express a preference for a character.

In Maths, we continue our work with numbers up to and

beyond 100. We will examine shapes, both 2D and 3D,

explore time and work on being able to tell the time to a

quarter to and a quarter past the hour.

The forces of push and pull is our focus in Science. We

will use the cars we made last term to examine these

forces.

In History, we will be examining a site in our local area

that has historical significance.

I am looking forward to another exciting and successful

term with the wonderful Year 2s!

Year 3/4 News Welcome to Term two! I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter break. We have a very busy term ahead with cross country, NAPLAN testing for the Year 3s and fun filled activities. In English, we are beginning with exploring per-sonal experiences through events. We will be reading a literary text that deals with an ethical situation and will write a persuasive letter. Maths will be busy this term as we continue with our times tables. We will also be learning about money, 3D shapes, angles and fractions. In Sci-ence, we will be investigating properties of solids and liq-uids, including the effect of adding and removing heat. In History, we will be exploring continuity and change in local communities. Homework will continue to consist of read-ing, maths and spelling. How can you help? Just listening to your child read and testing a few spelling words and number facts each day, will help reinforce their homework activities. Thank you for your persistence in signing the reading log. 4/5 News Some of Term 2 events include spelling bees, cross country,

Athletics Day, NAPLAN testing for Year 5s and of course, Se-

mester 1 report cards.

Our English unit involves reading a fantasy novel and revising

persuasive texts and narratives in preparation for the Year 5

writing component of the NAPLAN Test. The Maths curriculum

for each year level is determined by the Australian Curriculum

and content is taught and assessed in five or ten week units.

History units will continue on from Term 1, while our new Sci-

ence unit for the term is called, ‘ Material Use ‘, which looks at

the physical properties and uses of a range of materials. A

Visual Arts and Technology task will also be completed this

term.

Homework tasks will depend on curriculum content, but

spelling, reading and tables practice should be completed

daily. Thank you for monitoring and signing reading each

night. Accelerated Reader points targets for Term 2 have been

set at a minimum of 8 for Year 4 and 10 for Year 5. This

means that over a 10 week period, students in Year 4 have

only to earn 0.8 points per week and Year 5 to earn 1 point

per week, which is an achievable goal. Final points totals for

Term 1 have been recorded in the Term 1 diary, so we ask

you to please sign and discuss these results with your child.

Term 2 will prove to be a busy one indeed with numerous

tasks and projects to be completed before the end of term

report cards are issued.

June Tones

6 News Welcome back to Term 2. I trust everyone had a refreshing Easter vacation on top of

the extra two days of flood holidays. Here in the 5/6 classroom we have hit the ground

running- it sure looks like being a hyper-productive term!

Students are back into regular routines, with a whole host of new unit work on our

plates. In English, students have begun investigating the persuasive language fea-

tures associated with advertising, and have designed their own poster-based adver-

tisement for display at the Kilcoy Show this weekend. In Maths, students have com-

pleted diagnostic testing for Term 1 and have now moved on to some of the content

for this term, which includes; order of operations, fractions, measurement, angles,

shapes, geometry and patterns. I’m sure we’ll all have great fun improving our skills in

all of these areas.

This term, we will also be starting a focus on improving our Times Tables knowledge

(eg. 6x4=24). Our plan will incorporate students using a variety of methods aimed at

improving these ‘essential skills’. As per last year, we will be incorporating the use of

the “Maths Rockx” App, as well as students writing out their tables as a part of home-

work every day. Any assistance that parents can provide their child in testing and/or

in helping to recite times tables would be greatly appreciated.

Well, that’s about it for this issue. I would just like to inform parents/carers that I will

be taking 4 weeks of long-service leave commencing next week. Mr Rod Dann will be

replacing me in the classroom during this time frame and is well versed in my expec-

tations for the students. I’m sure everyone will have a great time with some of the Art

and Technology work that is planned. Don’t forget our reading goal (for most stu-

dents) this term is again 15 points (This means that students need to average around

1-2 points per week). Please be reminded that attendance at our end-of-term Pizza

Party is reliant upon students having met this target each week. Homework continues

to be reading, along with spelling words and times tables practise each night. Stu-

dents have been reminded to record their homework and pages read each night in

Interschool Debating

Congratulations to our Interschool Debating Teams who prac-

tised at Mt Kilcoy last term. This term, they will be competing

against Kilcoy, Mt Mee, Delaney’s Creek and Woodford

schools. Our debating students will be working hard to write

their formal debates, giving up many lunch times to polish

them. Well done Mt Kilcoy Debating teams. We look forward

to hearing of your results.

Tuckshop

Tomorrow, the P&C are holding the scheduled Easter tuck-

shop from term 1. All new orders and money were due yester-

day. There will be baked goods available for purchase made

by the parents of the year 1 class. Thank you to these parents

for your help.

ANZAC Day

Thank you to our students, parents and staff for doing

an amazing job of representing our school at the AN-

ZAC Day Parade and Ceremony yesterday. It was ter-

rific to see so many members of our community in at-

tendance again this year.

Cross Country

Our annual Cross Country was held on Tuesday 18 April

around our school grounds. Well done to all students who

participated and a special congratulations to ‘Omaroo House’

on their overall win.

Naplan Naplan testing will occur on 9,10 and 11 May for students in

years 3 and 5. Please ensure that your child/children have a

good night‘s sleep and a healthy breakfast. Good luck Mount

District Cross Country

On Tuesday, 2 May, selected students will be travelling to St

Michael’s College to compete in the District Cross Country.

Notes have been sent home with selected students. Please

ensure that these are returned to the school office by Friday.

Students will also receive a competitor’s shirt that needs to be

worn on the day. Ms Pratten will distribute and collect these

shirts on the day.

Mothers’ Day Stall

The P&C will be holding a Mothers’ Day Stall on 11 and 12

May. There will be items ranging from $1—$5 in price. It

would be great to receive family support in helping the P&C to

raise funds.

Labour Day Holiday

On Monday 1 May, Mt Kilcoy School will be closed for the

Labour Day holiday. School will resume Tuesday 2 May.

Free Tennis Lessons for Year s 4-6

As a result of another successful sporting schools grant, our

school will be offering free tennis lessons for students in years

4-6 this term. The lessons will be held during the afternoon

sessions on Wednesdays, starting in week 3 and running

through until week 8. Mr Farrell will be running these sessions

with our students. Students will receive a free tennis shirt

which they may wear on Wednesdays.

Administration

Please ensure that when you visit the school grounds, you

sign in at the office first. This is to ensure that we are comply-

ing with Education Queensland Policy and our Critical Inci-

dent Policy.

As you are aware, schooling every day is most important.

Please contact Kylie in the office to record your child’s ab-

sence. If you are sending a note, please ask your child to

take it to the office.

Please remember when collecting children, they are not to

cross the road unless accompanied by an adult. Students are

to remain within school grounds until collected. Please do not

walk behind the cars in the staff car park. Use the concrete

path and personal gate on the lower side of the car park.

Students are not to arrive at school before 8.15am, as no

supervision is available before then.

Christensen’s Bus Donation

Although the weather was challenging, students, staff and parents still had a great day at our Annual Swimming Car-

nival last term. I would like to thank Christensen’s Bus Company for not only picking up the remaining (wet) students,

but also kindly donating the bus trip to the school. Thank you John and Lenore!

Cleveland Turf Donation

Thank you to all of our parents and staff that were able to help (on short notice) lay the donated turf on our school

oval last term. We would also like to thank Cleveland Turf for the donation of two pallets of turf to our school. We

really appreciate your contribution!
