Mounts Bay AcademyBook Reviews
Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy
“For years, and years, this book series has kept me enthralled. Centring on a Skeleton Inspector in the streets of Dublin, it shines a light on the dark underbelly of Ireland's society, the conspiracy to cover it up and the gothic, evangelical horrors that lie within. I thoroughly encourage you to pick up this book because, if you struggle to read or find the task tiring, then this book will be the ideal resolution to your problem. Gripping. Stunning. Consuming.”

The Amber Spyglass by Phillip Pullman
“Although the third in the groundbreaking saga- 'His Dark Materials', it proves to be the most compelling and richly imaginative story you'll ever come across. I encourage you to pick it up because it holds a childhood-like memory of discovery and fantasy. The story drifts from light to dark, cogitating many bizarre and disturbing elements whilst sustaining it's plot. The final scene- of sentimentality and a sense of closure- (situated in Oxford's BotanicalGardens) is enough to make this series, as a whole, worth reading.”

“I recommend this book because this is one of the only books that I have actually finished without stopping. It is a great read for young people as I was 12 or 13 at the time and it had me glued to the book from start to finish.
It was so popular that it has been made into feature films. Although I really don't enjoy reading, this is the only book in years that I have read.”

The Tommyknockers by Stephen King
“I encourage you to read this book if you love to understand and read about a book's characters. This book 'flows' with many, many characters- whilst keeping the narrative secure and understandable. Although a brick to look at, it contains mesmerising scenes of alien obscurities, circling around a buried UFO's discovery and it's affects upon the habitants of Haven- a small town. For 'thriller' and 'science-fiction' lovers this book is a must- a wild exploration of human nature and that of extra-terrestrials.”

Everyone has bad mornings. You wake up late, you stub your toe, “you burn the toast...but for a man named Arthur Dent, this goes far beyond a bad day. When he learns that a friend of his is actually an alien with advanced knowledge of Earth's impending destruction, he is transported off the Earth seconds before it is exploded to make way for a new hyperspace motorway. And as if that's not enough, throw in being wanted by the police, Earth II, an insane electronic encyclopedia, no tea whatsoever, a chronically depressed robot and the search for the meaning of life, and you've got the greatest adventure off Earth.”
