MPS Club Chat June 2019
June 2019 Hi Members This month was very busy with two meetings on offer. Besides our normal club night we also had the Natural History competition which was judged by our very own Bruce Shanks. Bruce shared with us a bit of the Clubs history which was very enlightening to hear about. Congratulations to all the winners on the night. Awesome work shown. Look forward to seeing you all at the June meeting.
Review of David Smith’s workshop about finding your photographic style Take a group of photographers to the same place and each will come away with something different. Why? Because our captures are a reflection of the genres that appeal, and the way we treat the various elements that create an image; lighting, colour, format, tonal range, visual flow, and the use of technical options such as HDR and time lapse. As image creators or artists, what are we looking for - the carefully composed natural look, or maybe something a bit abstract? A digitally enhanced work of art that bears scant resemblance to the original photo; the possibilities are numerous. The combination of our choices makes each photographer’s work unique, and this uniqueness reflects our personal photographic style, which is an extension of our personality. David took us through the process that leads to the formation of our own style; identifying the things that make us passionate about our craft, seeking inspiration and guidance from others, and being a willing critic of your own work. Setting out to emulate the work of others without allowing your own creative preferences to shine through is a recipe for failure. David’s well-researched and analytical approach came to the fore in the delivery of his workshop. Explanations and opinions were clear, well reasoned and inspirational. I came away feeling encouraged and vindicated about my own stylistic approach; not because it was good or bad, but because it was a legitimate reflection of me that will evolve and give pleasure for a long time to come - providing I work at it!
