Our ProgramAanchal – Children’s Home for GirlsThe children’s home for girls ‘Aanchal’, working for creating a family environment for a group of eleven children coming from difficult backgrounds with either negligible adult support or no adult support at all. We started off with eleven girls this year, said goodbye to three, but welcomed four new girls. These eleven girls are growing more and more each and every day through the opportunities Aanchal has to offer. They are given an education through school and at home and are eager to learn.

This school year started off great with new academic sessions.

Priya (13*) was selected as Children’s Advisory’s Board (CAB) member, an initiate of Chetna. Because of this, she received the chance to attend a residential orientation program that they offered only to a select few. One of our youngest girls, Mansi (9*) has left our Aanchal home and has been permanently returned to her family, as her mother was getting treated for a mental illness for some time but has now successfully and fully recovered. We will miss Mansi here in our Jamghat community, but our

Aanchal

hearts are satisfied to know that she is reunited with her family once again. We are also happy to share the news that we now have a new addition to our home- Pratigya Tripathi (13*) has come on the 17 th of June. To make the month even more exciting, the girls received a visit from Mr. Rishabh Bajpai, long time friend of Jamghat’s, from RBS Singapore.

Pratigya was quickly enrolled in regular school in August. With the help of a tutor, studies and tuition classes continued routinely. Due to their hard work, all of the girls scored well on their midterm examinations in September. At the Life Centre Academy School, some of the girls were even awarded prizes for the inter-house drama competition that was held in August. Pooja (15*) and Eram (13*) both received 1st prizes and Priya 3rd.

Excitement levels began to rise in the Aanchal home as the Diwali Festival started getting closer and closer. The girls went shopping for new clothes and accessories and made lots of decorations to cover the house with. The day of the festival was a success. They had a pooja ceremony, celebrated with many fire crackers, and ended the night with a large, delicious dinner!

Three volunteers two from USA and one from Germany came to Jamghat . During this week, they were taught soap-making and bracelet-making skills, which were fun and useful! The girls are doing very well with their studies and keeping good academic grades, as well as keeping up with their religions. In between all of their hard work, they are still finding the time to take part in recreational activities and get active in sports.

After getting a family in Jamghat, these children were able to come out of a drug-based environment and were willing to be reunited with their families. During their time at Aman, they learned skills based on their specific interests and capabilities. Most of them today have remained self reliant; they have gotten married and are able to support their families.

Aman is a long term children’s home with a capacity of 16 boys. In case of need, it can accommodate few more children. One boy is attending vocational training course at Haor salon. 13 boys are attending regular school. Schools reopened in July 2014, after the summer vacation was over. A farewell for Prasanjeet and Rajiv was organized in August. It was a very emotional day for all of us to see them go as they have been with us for many years, but we are very proud of the self-reliant young men that they have become today. Arbaz (16*) is studying in X standard. Additionally, he has signed up to take a three month basic computer course and a personality development course in NIIT,

Aangan – Day Care for Street ChildrenAangan is a day care that we have been running since 2008 with the support from Max India Foundation. It was started initially to provide healthcare and nutrition to the children belonging to the homeless communities living near Jama Masjid, but the centre has seen a major growth since its induction back then. Today it is a fully equipped day care offering non-formal education along with mainstream regular school admissions for older children, quality healthcare and nutritious food for 40-50 children every day. Along with this, children are exposed to a variety of activities meant for their social, emotional and physical growth such as arts and craft, dance and theatre, sports, indoor games, life skills education, awareness on health related issues, etc.

We have 26 children attending regular private school and 18 enrolled in National Institute of Open Schooling. Jaseem, an outstanding student in class II, stood 4th in his class during midterm examinations in September 2014. We have a total of 40-45 children, who are enrolled at Noor Niwas Public School, that come to spend the day at Aangan. The educator visits the Aangan home five days a week and prepares the lesson plans based on NCERT syllabus.

Healthcare and nutrition form a very important part of our program. Breakfast for all children, tiffins for school going children, lunch and evening snacks all provided everyday in the centre. Fruits are also provided to children very week. Also, preparation of food menu that ensures a balanced diet along with incorporating children’s wishes too, is prepared every month and implemented. A pediatrician from Max hospital visits the centre every month to conduct health checkups for all children. Children with need of further diagnoses are referred to Max hospital, Patparganj for detailed checkups.

Personal hygiene remains at the core of our program and to ensure this, the time for bathing and cleaning has been especially put in the centre’s schedule for years. Children are encouraged to use the bathroom and toilet available for them every morning. Regular health sessions also ensure the education for children on important health related issues. Due to these efforts there has been an improved level of hygiene and health in almost all of our regular children.

Regular creative sessions to bring out the creativity of children to serve as a medium for free expressions, along with theatre workshops and educational sessions on the topics relevant to their ages have been a regular part of children’s schedule.

The year was off to a good start in April 2014. Four team members from Medecins Sans Frontiers (MSF) came to the centre and spoke with our older children to help them better understand the issues of sexual and gender based violence in the community. The aim was to get the children to determine the needs of the community for future planning. Later on in June, 36 children from IILM Institute visited Aangan in association with Pravah. Children from both sides gained from this experience, as they got to interact with new faces while take part in fun activities. On the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr in July, children were provided with new clothesand enjoyed the festival with special food and sweets. On Independence Day, 26 of our children visited Daryaganj Police Station to attend a a special function held

by the Delhi Police. They participated in drawing competing and were gifted with school bags and stationary.

Children of Aangan celebrated Diwali with great enthusiasm. They had sweets and burst fire crackers. They also made Sewiyain and offered namaz. They visited Indraprasth Park for kite making and flying. In November, a theatre workshop was organized and skit was prepared with 5-7 of the children depicting discrimination against girls. Computer classes are organized every week for the children.

In early March, four children from Aangan participated in a workshop at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. The idea of the workshop was to encourage children to not only address their problems but to try and resolve them in an appropriate way, individually and collectively, as well. The workshop was titled Children Creativity and Company- Creation Camp: INNOVATIONS by Children for Children and the Family.
