notes page. Write one sentence stating how Paul feels about himself on September 9 (the day of the carnival).

On the right side of your double-entry journal, list the reasons why you think Paul feels this way about himself. Then, number the reasons you included, from most to least significant. Sentence stating how Paul feels about himself on September 9.

Three reasons why you think Paul feels this way about himself. Number the reasons from most to least significant with 1 being most significant. B. Paul imagines that if he was in the “freak show” display at the Carnival, he would be

Eclipse Boy. What carnival attraction would you be based on your own unique oddities? Create a poster of your freak show attraction. On the back, write an explanation for your “freak Show” display.

Dave's Rules of Dating March 08, 1992|By DAVE BARRY

As a mature adult, I feel an obligation to help the younger generation, just as the mother fish guards her unhatched eggs, keeping her lonely vigil day after day, never leaving her post, not even to go to the bathroom, until her tiny babies emerge and she is able, at last, to eat them. "She may be your mom, but she's still a fish," is a wisdom nugget that I would pass along to any fish eggs reading this column.

But today I want to talk about dating. This subject was raised in a letter to me from a young person named Eric Knott, who writes:

"I have got a big problem. There's this girl in my English class who is really good looking. However, I don't think she knows I exist. I want to ask her out, but I'm afraid she will say no, and I will be the freak of the week. What should I do?"

Eric, you have sent your question to the right mature adult, because as a young person I spent a lot of time thinking about this very problem. Starting in about eighth grade, my time was divided as follows:

Academic pursuits: 2 percent.

Zits: 16 percent.

Trying to Figure Out How to Ask Girls Out: 82 percent.

The most sensible way to ask a girl out is to walk directly up to her on foot and say, "So, you want to go out? Or what?" I never did this. I knew, as Eric Knott knows, that there was always the possibility that the girl would say no, thereby leaving me with no viable option but to leave Harold C. Crittenden Junior High School forever and go into the woods and become a bark-eating hermit whose only companions would be the gentle and understanding woodland creatures.

"Hey, Zitface!" the woodland creatures would shriek in cute little Chip 'n' Dale voices while raining acorns down upon my head. "You wanna date? Hahahahahaha."

So the first rule of dating is: Never risk direct contact with the girl in question. Your role model should be the nuclear submarine, gliding silently beneath the ocean surface, tracking an enemy target that does not even begin to suspect that the submarine would like to date it. I spent the vast majority of 1960 keeping a girl named Judy under surveillance,

As you read the article, 1) underline the author’s attempts at humor. Can you recognize when the author is using language to inject a sense of fun? 2) Explain whether or not the author answers Eric’s question in a satisfactory way. 3) Write your own column or paper answering this question: My name is Paul Fisher. I’m a new student at Lake Windsor Middle school in Tangerine County, FL. I really like this girl Kerri Gardner, but I think she thinks I’m a freak and may like another boy named Adam. What should I do?

Page 6: Mr. Moorehouse ELA · Blocking the shot of Gino, the best player on the team _____ 5. Mike Costello’s death is a tragedy because: a. He was a nice guy and had a scholarship to the

maintaining a minimum distance of 50 lockers to avoid the danger that I might somehow get into a conversation with her, which could have led to disaster:

Judy: Hi.

Me: Hi.

Judy: Just in case you have ever thought about having a date with me, the answer is no.

Woodland creatures: Hahahahahaha.

The only problem with the nuclear-submarine technique is that it's difficult to get a date with a girl who has never, technically, been asked. This is why you need Phil Grant. Phil was a friend of mine who had the ability to talk to girls. So, after several thousand hours of intense discussion and planning with me, Phil approached a girl he knew named Nancy, who approached a girl named Sandy, who was a direct personal friend of Judy's and who passed the word back to Phil via Nancy that Judy would be willing to go on a date with me.

Thus it was that, finally, Judy and I went on an actual date, to see a movie in White Plains, N.Y. If I were to sum up the romantic ambience of this date in four words, those words would be: "My mother was driving." This made for an extremely quiet drive, because my mother, realizing that her presence was hideously embarrassing, had to pretend she wasn't there. Judy and I, sitting in the back seat about 75 feet apart, were also silent, unable to communicate without the assistance of Phil, Nancy and Sandy.

After what seemed like several years we got to the movie theater, where my mother went off to sit in the Parents and Lepers Section. The movie was called "North to Alaska," but I can tell you nothing else about it because I spent the whole time wondering whether it would be necessary to amputate my right arm, which was not getting any blood flow as a result of being perched for two hours like a petrified snake on the back of Judy's seat exactly one molecule away from physical contact.

So it was definitely a fun first date, featuring all the relaxed spontaneity of a real-estate closing. My point, Eric Knott, is that the key to successful dating is self-confidence. I bet that girl in your English class would love to go out with you. But you have to make the first move. So just do it! Pick up that phone! Call Phil Grant.

The in-house bully

By Heidi Stevens, Tribune Newspapers

1Jeanne Safer didn't need a study to tell her that sibling aggression can cause a child as much distress as being bullied by a peer.

2Safer, a psychoanalyst and author of "Cain's Legacy: Liberating Siblings from a Lifetime of Rage, Shame, Secrecy and Regret" (Basic Books), hears it firsthand from her patients, many of whom are carrying mental — and sometimes physical — scars from familial skirmishes well into adulthood.

3"Being bullied by someone you live with 24/7 for 20 years of your life has at least the same effect as a kid on the schoolground? This is news?" Safer asks rhetorically. "You're bullied in your safe haven, in your bedroom, at the dinner table, in the backyard, when your friends come over. This is a problem hiding in plain sight."

4Not anymore. A new study in the journal Pediatrics finds that sibling aggression is associated with "significantly worse" mental health in children and adolescents compared to kids who don't experience sibling bullying. Researchers interviewed kids ages 10 to 17 and caregivers of children up to 9 years old to measure the

fallout from physical assaults, destruction or theft of property, threats, name-calling and other psychological aggression.

5One-third of the children said they were victimized by a brother or sister in the previous year and reported higher rates of anxiety, depression and anger as a result.

6"What has been accepted as normal or even good training between siblings is looked at very differently when the same behaviors happen between peers," says lead author Corinna Jenkins Tucker, an associate professor of family studies at the University of New Hampshire. "It's a subject that's typically been dismissed or chalked up to sibling rivalry. But you can have a natural rivalry that doesn't end with someone feeling like a victim."

7Tucker hopes the results will change the way we approach sibling relationships. "There are lots of programs out there to prevent peer aggression, but rarely is there a focus on sibling aggression," she says.

8The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identifies bullying as a major public health concern, citing research that shows children who are bullied are at greater risk for depression and anxiety, lower academic scores and broader health complaints that can last into adulthood.

9Very little public attention has been paid to decreasing the incidents of sibling bullying, though. Within their new study, Tucker and her co-authors push for a more vigorous approach to the problem.

10"The mobilization to prevent and stop peer victimization and bullying should expand to encompass sibling aggression as well," the study states. "Parents, pediatricians and the public should treat sibling aggression as potentially harmful and something not to be dismissed as normal, minor or even beneficial."

11A conflict-free home is an unrealistic goal — and also an undesirable one, experts say. Conflict can be a powerful teacher.

12"Brothers and sisters are going to fight," says Tucker. "Why not teach the more constructive forms of conflict management and conflict resolution?

13"Your sibling is one of the first people you learn to fight with," she adds. "There have been studies showing how the nature of your conflict with your siblings is related to the kind of conflict you have with your dating partners."

14Too often, says Safer, parents turn a blind eye to the sparring. "They have no clue what to do, so they justify it. 'Oh, it's not so bad. It toughens them up. It builds character.'"

Page 15: Mr. Moorehouse ELA · Blocking the shot of Gino, the best player on the team _____ 5. Mike Costello’s death is a tragedy because: a. He was a nice guy and had a scholarship to the

15If they step in at all, she says, many parents do so on behalf of the abusive sibling.

16"Many times the problem child is the one who gets more help or sympathy and the healthy sibling is told to be more understanding and compassionate," she says. "That stays with you. I see people well into middle age who feel guilty about being abused. Who feel they weren't sufficiently compassionate" toward their troubled sibling, even in light of the abuse.

17Far better to draw a firm distinction about what's acceptable and what's not. "Parents need to tell the abused child, 'You do not have to tolerate this, and I will help you defend yourself. I will get your brother or sister professional help, and I will not permit them to harm you,'" Safer says. "(They) need to be conscious of the effects of what goes on with their children."

18Noted child and family therapist Patti Criswell, who teaches graduate courses in social work at Western Michigan University, compares parents ignoring sibling bullying to superiors not protecting women in the military from being assaulted by their fellow service members.

19"It's on a different scale, I realize," she says. "But the trauma of being assaulted by a comrade is another whole level than being assaulted by an enemy. And if ... your parents don't protect you from your abusive sibling — it leads to kids feeling like they aren't safe in their own homes.

20"I hear parents say, 'Oh, they'll work it out on their own,'" Criswell says. "They're rolling the dice. Maybe they will, maybe they won't. But what problem-solving skills are your kids learning from being aggressive? Or from having to be passive in the face of aggression?"
