    1. Background of the Study

When Mr Pirzada Came to Dinewas written byJhumpa Lahiri on 1999. It is one of the short storiesin Lahiris book,Interpreter of Maladies.

In analysing this short story, we use the theory ofPostcolonial criticism.

Our concern is about double-consciousness in Liliascharacter. In analysing this character, we use

postcolonial theory by Homi K. Bhabha. We chooseLilias character because the character experiencestwo different cultures at the same time.

Lilias parents are Indian born but they moved toAmerica so Lilia has to adapt Indian and Americanway of living.

Bhabha calls this feeling of homelessness, of beingcaught between two clashing cultures, unhomeliness,a concept referred to as double consciousness bysome postcolonial theories (Bressler 241).

    4. Theoretical Framework

In analysing the postcolonialism issues about doubleconsciousness , we use Postcolonialism Theory byHomi K. Bhabha because we want to discover what thetext reveals about the problematic of postcolonialidentity, including the relationship between personaland cultural identity and such issues as doubleconsciousness, especially in Lilias character.

Bhabha has explained about unhomeliness conditionin his book The Location of Culture,

That is the condition of extra teritorial and crosscultural imitation. To be unhome is not to be homelessnor can 'unhomely' be easily accomodated in that

familiar division of social life into private and publicspheres. (Bhabha 23)

Moreover, ones historical background which related topostcolonial condition influences his habitualactivities since he is trapped between two different

cultures, he tries to negotiate those differences in theirlife. As Bhabha stated,

Although the unhomely is a paradigmaticcolonial and postcolonial condition, it has

resonance that can be heard distinctly, iferratically, in fictions that negotiate the powers ofcultural difference in arrange of transhistoricalsides (Bhabha 23)

    5. Method of the Study

Close reading to find out the issues in the story

Through close reading we find that the issue is double

consciousness in Lilias character To limit the problem, we formulate the statement of

the problem focusing on double consciousness inLilias character

In answering the statement of problem, we apply thePostcolonial Theory by Homi K Bhabha Therefore, wecan find the conclusion of our analysis

    6. Analysis

Lilia as the second generation, is accustomed to Americanculture and considered unusual (in the American way ofliving) to invite stranger to dine in their house. Different

with her parents who see Mr. Pirzada as a part of theirworld, Lilia sees him as the stranger. She needs time toaccustom to the presence of Mr. Pirzada.

When Mr. Pirzada comes to Lilias house, she realizes that

she does not know much about India and its culture whichare her parents (therefore, also Lilias) part of the world. She is too accustomed to American culture.

    13/17

Lilia is too accustomed to American culture can also beseen with Lilias family habit to hang the coat of theperson who comes to their home.

The adoption of Lilias to American culture is also canbe seen when Halloween comes. Although she isIndian, Lilia celebrates it and takes part in it withbecoming a witch. She also knows well how to crave

jack-o-lantern, as she instructs Mr. Pirzada to make it.When Lilia and her friend go to do trick or treat,

Lilias parents think that they are old enough to go bythemselves, unattended.

    14/17

Although Lilia adopts mostly American ways in herdaily life, her family actually still maintains Indianculture in their house, too. It can be seen in Liliasfamilys habit, such as what they eat and how they eattheir food, which are so Eastern. They eat rice andsometimes they use their hands to eat their food.

    7. Conclusion

As we have seen from the explanation above, thepostcolonial issues and its effects can also influencesimply in our daily life, which most people do notrealize about. It is reflected on Lilias character on how

she negotiates two different cultures as she facesunhomeliness or double consciousness.

    16/17

In the story, we find out that Lilia adopts two differentcultures, India and America. In adopting Americanand Indian culture, her behavior can be seen when she

takes part in Halloween night, takes and hangs theguests coat on the rack at the bottom of the stairs, butstill maintaining Indian culture such as eating Indianfood, knowing Hindi language, taking off her shoesbefore entering a room, and drinking no alcohol. Fromthese evidences, we conclude that Lilia is facing doubleconsciousness or unhomeliness.
