Vol. 46 No. 16 1st November 2012

Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of Saints,

Throughout our lives each one of us will face adversity in its various shapes and forms. There will be earth shattering events that will sap every ounce of strength from our bodies and spirit and there will be minor obstacles we can deal with and move through with relative ease. We face adversity in groups where love and support can be given to another to help cope, while individual adversity can be seen as a personal challenge to build inner strength.

In the last year a fire has destroyed my family home and my mother has passed away. According to the ‘catastrophe scale’ I should be a basket case, but coping mechanisms and the support of family and friends, have ensured that I have come through these events a stronger person.

One of my favourite prayers was penned by General Douglas MacArthur in 1952 for his son. In the prayer MacArthur prays that his son will develop traits and qualities that he believes are important in his son’s growth to manhood.

‘Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenges. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.’

MacArthur acknowledges that through challenge and the overcomings of obstacles, his son will become a better man. Here at St Augustine’s the same acknowledgement has been made. We impress upon our students the need to be resilient

and persevere in times of challenge and difficultly. A phrase which has crept into common usage is ‘have a spoonful of cement and harden up’. Whilst not being the most eloquent saying it does convey the point that resilience is an important requirement in our personal skills set.

It is in times of crisis that we can find out a little about others and inevitably a little about ourselves. An African proverb states that “smooth seas do not make for skillful sailors”. So it is with ourselves as we navigate life’s trials and tribulations.

As a school we also face challenges. Since our founding in 1930 the school has been affected by wars, depressions, epidemics and relocations amongst others. The Marist Brothers were charged with the responsibility of starting a school on mangrove swampland in Far North Queensland which, at the time, would have felt a million miles from civilisation. It has been hardship and struggle, the obstacles and challenges that have galvanised this school into the place it is today.

It has been the Saints community, the Saints family, which has cared and supported one another in these times of hardship and struggle. It has been through these challenges that the College has become a better school.

The Saints spirit was created from adversity and I am sure it will continue to prosper in whatever challenges lie ahead of it.

Our team won their semi-final 3 goals to 1 against Toowoomba Grammar on Friday night and then won the Grand Final 4 goals to 2 against Ignatius Park Townsville. From Br BillReview of our 2012 Annual Plan

Thank you to all those parents who gathered for the review of our Annual Plan. I appreciated very much the support of this parent feedback opportunity. All the information gathered will be fed back to our parents in our newsletter at the end of the year. Staff feedback has similarly been collected and both sets of dates will be communicated in a special edition of our newsletter over the Christmas break.

Planning Ahead for 2013In the year ahead we will be featuring a few new initiatives to connect parents more with the College. Dates and times will be communicated early in 2013. I hope parents will be able to join us for these special initiatives. Mother & Son Morning Tea: A special assembly paying tribute to our Mum/Carers will be held in the lead up to Mother’s day. Morning tea will follow the assembly. Father & Son Breakfast: In the weeks prior to Father’s Day we will hold a breakfast in the hall for Dad/Carers and sons. My hope is to include a speaker of note who might be able to join us for the morning. Father & Son Camp: After the success of our first Father and Son Camp we will be holding a similar camp again in 2013. Mother’s “Spoil Yourself” Trip: In 2013 I will be organising a day out for Mum to some local attractions. It will be a relaxing day and we will do the driving for you. All you need to do is park your car at the College and jump on our coach. I hope we get a big response from this event in 2013. Meet & Greet Cocktail Evening: We held our first such event in 2012 and it proved to be an enjoyable night. All existing and new parents are invited to join us for a relaxed evening in Lennon Hall. Our Meet and Greet night will be early in Term One. Details of all these events will be provided early in the new year in our January Newsletter. I hope parents make the effort to come along and join in the family spirit of the Saints Community.

Northern Beaches Bus Run 2013As this run has proven to be well patronized I will continue with its operation next year. Payment for Term Passes will be able to occur on the Parent Lounge for next year for those who are interested in this option. This will save parents the need to come to the front office. This will only be available for Term Passes. Weekly and individual tickets will need to be purchased from the front office prior to travel. Term Passes may still be purchased from the front office for those choosing to do so. This option will be available from January 2013. Details for this option will be communicated in the January Newsletter which will be posted home to parents.

Cooktown Country DinnerThank you to all staff, parents and students who joined us for a most enjoyable dinner at Cooktown recently. These occasions are always special times so many thanks for joining us on the night. A more detailed report is contained later in the newsletter.

TERM 4 CALENDAR EVENTS

SAINTS STUDENTS COMMENDED IN ICAS ENGLISH COMPETITIONStudents from St. Augustine’s College achieved outstanding results when they participated in the ICAS English competition earlier this year.

Sat annually, the test assesses reading and language skills in a range of contexts. Students read a variety of texts which narrate, describe, explain, argue, persuade and review. The types of texts include extracts from picture books, novels, poems, play scripts, transcripts of interviews, letters, diary entries, advertisements, webpages, feature articles, opinion pieces and comics. These texts cover a range of topics and may include tables, diagrams, maps and other visual information.

Those students whose achievements were outstanding were rewarded with 47 Certificates of Credit and 32 Distinctions, while special congratulations go to Ryan O’Grady, Rohan Olufson, Will French, Jack Nurthen and Cameron McCormack who attained High Distinctions, placing them in the top one percent of students in the State.

Saints CommunityOne of the defining features of our College is its sense of community. The students would identify closely with the Marist pillar of “family spirit”. The size of the College coupled with the many programs and events that the College celebrates builds this sense of spirit. As in any community, and indeed any family, there does arise occasions to address things that are, or appear to be, contrary to the spirit of the College. In most instances a conversation with the appropriate person resolves the issue. Other matters require deeper consideration or investigation in order to ensure the appropriate resolution. As a College we take these matters seriously and indeed invite all members of the Saints community to raise issues of concern with the person at the College who is best able to resolve the situation. To ensure effective and prompt attention it is always advisable to initially seek out the staff member responsible for the nominated area. Page xxii of the College Diary outlines our procedures in resolving concerns. I have highlighted some of those procedures below.HOW TO RESOLVE CONCERNS Each member of the College community has the right to be heard and a responsibility to challenge practices and policies that contribute to an unsafe or an unjust environment. The following procedures are in place to provide opportunities to express grievances/concerns with a view to resolving them. Such procedures will ensure reflection, review and renewal of policies and practices in keeping with the ethos of the College.Personal, Social or Pastoral AreasStudent Homeroom Year DeputyParent Teacher Coordinator Principal ResolutionStaff Member (Pastoral)

If resolution is not reached to the satisfaction of all parties, concerns would then be passed on to the Principal. At all times parents and students may raise matters directly with me as the Deputy of Pastoral Care or with the Principal if they believe that this is the best option for them. Mr David HarrisDeputy Principal (Pastoral)

This is the third year St. Augustine’s students have competed in the Asia-Wise Competition and again we are proud of their excellent results. The selected Year 8 and 9 boys worked together in teams to research answers to over 50 multiple choice questions about Asian History, Geography, Law, Economics and Cultures. It was noted by students who competed last year how much tougher the competition papers were this year, which could be due to the growing popularity of this excellent programme.

Distinction Winners are as follows: James Lay, Andrew Trewin, Connor Wright, Eusebio Goncalves, Harry Dagleish, Jake Mowle, Luke Angus, Matthew Vander Zant.

INtad departmeNtThe St. Augustine’s INTAD department has again been very successful in the Industrial Technology and Design awards with eighteen boys winning prizes this year. The awards conducted by the Business Liaison Association and sponsored by many local businesses are to encourage excellence in design, drawing and manufacture. The competition is open to all schools in the Cairns and surrounding district with many excellent and innovative projects presented for judging.

Many of the entries were on display at Cairns Central where the presentation to prize winners took place last week. The Saints projects will be on display in the foyer of Lennon Hall on Presentation night. Congratulations to all of the boys and a special thank you to their teachers who have done that bit extra to ensure we maintain our high standards.

The final version of the CD will be posted on the College website in November.

Artist in Residence: The two week Artist-in-Residence program was a huge success. Students gained valuable insight into the world of professional acting but also in how drama performance is used as a means of reflecting on the world around us in order for us to build and develop our resilience. Students learnt a range of practical and theory skills, commencing with the Year 9’s exploring comedy, mask and clowning, the Year 10’s experiencing characterisation and vocal techniques required to present monologues, Year 11’s refining their playbuilding scripts to develop modernised Commedia del’ Arte scripts and the Year 12 refining their script analysis, evaluation and interpretation skills. Sincere thanks go to Mr Clint Bolster for his commitment and dedication provided in enhancing the learning environment of Saint Augustine’s Drama students. Mr Malcolm Cole

Seeking HELP is not a sign of failure!

In fact, it is a STRONG person who is able to acknowledge and express his vulnerability and a COURAGEOUS person who is prepared to honestly face and CHANGE the elements of his life that are not working as well as they could.

At some time in our life, we ALL need help. Human beings are COMPLEX creatures and there is no shame in using a bit of help to “fix” a few things when you know that you need to do some “repairs”. (Just like calling for the plumber when the pipes burst.)

If you are having a few hassles (big or small), talk to someone...sometimes we get so “stuck” that we need someone else to help us see another way of dealing with things.

School Counsellors are here to help...

College Sacramental Program: Twenty-four students welcomed into the Catholic ChurchTwenty four students from Year’s 8-10 have over the last 3 months been journeying with Fr Laurie, Br Bill and Br Joa, towards celebrating the Sacraments of Initiation into the Catholic Church. Last Sunday, October 21, the Sacramental candidates were welcomed into the Catholic Church during Mass celebrated with sponsors, parents, friends and staff. The Mass, presided over by Bishop James Foley and Fr Laurie, included 8 Baptisms, 22 students making their first Eucharist and 24 Confirmations. It was a joyous celebration, not only for the many candidates, but for their sponsors and families as well. The candidates’ desire to become members of the Catholic Church recognises the sense of belonging and authentic spirituality that they have witnessed in the Catholic Church and its expression through the College.

Many thanks to Bishop James and Fr Laurie for presiding over the Sunday night Mass. Special thanks must be extended to Fr Laurie, Br Bill and Br Joa for preparing these young men towards membership into the Catholic Church. A note of congratulations to the families who have nurtured the faith of their sons and also to the students who made this significant step in their journey of faith. We also look forward to celebrating the Initiation of Sacraments with another 4 students at Sunday night Mass in the very near future.

St Vincent de Paul Christmas AppealSt Augustine’s is currently involved in the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal fundraising initiative. Over the next 2 weeks, students, staff and families have been asked to collect Christmas food items to assist in this worthwhile appeal. This year, St Augustine’s College has set a goal to collect over 50 baskets of items, similar to what we reached last year. Non-perishable items such as drinks, chips, chocolates, biscuits, bon-bons and other items would be ideal choices, food items that the boys themselves would hope to enjoy on Christmas day. Saints is very proud to support the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal and I would ask the entire Saints community to get behind this appeal. The first 2 weeks of the fundraising drive have been solid and we look forward to finishing off in a very generous fashion.Mr Brett Toombs - Director of Mission

On Saturday the 20th October the Cooktown Country Dinner took place at the Sovereign Resort Hotel in Cooktown. Families from Cooktown, Bloomfield, Helenvale, Lakeland and surrounds joined for a relaxed and informal dinner at “The Sovereign”. The Country Dinners form a very important link between Boarding Families and the staff who care for their children while in Boarding at Saints. Many of the Girl Boarders are from the Cooktown area as well as a number of the boys and it is a great occasion when all of these families can meet in a relaxed atmosphere and enjoy each other’s company.Particular thanks go to Br Bill and Mr Kersevani for their attendance at the dinner and Mr Lawrence who attended the dinner and drove the mini-bus to deliver the Boarders home and return a number of them to Saints on the Sunday. This was mine and my family’s first visit to Cooktown and a weekend we enjoyed very much. Our thanks to the families in the area for the hospitality they extended to us.This was the last of the Country Dinners for 2012 but I encourage all families to check the 2013 Calendar when it becomes available for the Country Dinner which may be coming to you next year.On another note, the Boarders’ Mass dates for the remainder of 2012 are:Sunday 28th OctoberSunday 11th NovemberSunday 25th NovemberAll Boarders are expected to be in attendance for each of these Masses during Term 4.I trust that Term 4 will continue to be a positive one and I look forward to meeting with many families in the final weeks of school and boarding in 2012Mr Bernard BurgessHeard of Boarding

SAINTS SPORT

St Augustine’s College are the State Champions of the Red Lion Cup after defeating Ignatius Park, Townsville 4-2 in the grand final on Saturday night at Endeavour Park.

In a see-sawing match a second half goal by Alec Mortimer sealed the victory and secured the trophy for the local team improving on their 3rd placing in 2011.

The Red Lion Cup is a knockout competition involving Queensland high school football teams and culminates in the final four qualifying schools playing semi-finals and a grand-final determining the state champions. This year the qualifying teams were Toowoomba Grammar, Mountain Creek S.H.S from the Sunshine Coast, Ignatius Park from Townsville and St Augustine’s College representing Far North Queensland.

In the semi-finals held on Friday night Ignatius Park were drawn against Mountain Creek and finally ran out winners at the end of extra time with a golden goal in the final minute avoiding a penalty shootout. St Augustine’s lined up against a well drilled Toowoomba Grammar team and performed well all over the park to run out 3-1 victors. Goals to Brayden Phelps, Ethan Docherty and Wesley Knight ensured a winning start to the finals campaign but special mention must go to Anthony Zecchinati who was brilliant in goal pulling off several fingertip saves to keep his team in the match. The win set up an all North Queensland final for the first time in the Cup’s history.

In Saturday’s grand final, a match hardened Ignatius Park team fresh from a tour of Europe, where they had played five games against tough opposition, lined up confidently against the local boys from St Augustine’s College in Cairns. The Saints outfit had prepared well for their Townsville counterparts and were

ready for a fast paced beginning to the game matching their opponents all over the pitch and eventually breaking through with a well worked goal started by Adric Armstrong-Smith with an overlapping run down the right flank from fullback and finished off by Brayden Phelps with a well taken strike on goal. The Cairns team were at it again only minutes later with their captain Tom Meath terrorising the opposition’s midfield and striking a deflected shot into the Ignatius Park net. Ten minutes later it was three nil when youngster Ethan Docherty coolly slotted home and completed the perfect start to a match for the Saints. A different complexion was brought upon the game close to half-time when the Townsville team pounced on two Saints errors to run into the sheds with all the momentum and a 3-2 scoreline.

The first ten minutes of the second half was a tight affair with both teams competing for dominance. The Saints back four under the instruction of keeper Zecchinati held strong and repelled numerous attempts on their goal as a desperate Ignatius Park team powered forward in search of an equaliser. Play moved from end to end with both teams enjoying good periods of possession. In the 60th minute midfield workhorse Alec Mortimer latched onto a teammate’s attempted shot and slotted home his side’s fourth goal reinstating a two goal buffer. This was the catalyst for a hectic last 20 minutes in which wave after wave of Ignatius Park attack was turned away by the defence of Adric Armstrong-Smith, Marcus McShane, Lloyd Knight and Brendan Marino. The final whistle saw St Augustine’s run out 4-2 victors and State champions. Congratulations goes to the entire Saints squad who all contributed to a famous victory.Mr Terry McDonough - Coach
