Mrs. Carroll’s Newsletter Unit 6 Week 1 April 20, 2018 Spelling: Focus of the Week: Words with Multi-Syllables High Frequency Words: October, November Word Bank Sample Words pencil magnet, publish, supper, letter, lady, gravy solo, open, odor, helper, super Reading: Story of the Week: “The Golden Flower: A Taino Myth from Puerto Rico” Comprehension Strategy: Reread Comprehension Skill: Theme Genre: Myth Grammar: Adjectives Adjectives describe a noun. They can tell “what kind” or “how many” of something. Examples: The tallest plants reach the sunlight. (what kind) I have read many stories. (how many) There are three kittens by the tree. (how many) Math: Unit 6, Module 3: Composing & Decomposing Patchwork Shapes and Unit 6, Module 4: Patchwork Fractions Students will count different colored patches, label them, and write equations to show the area of the quilt block. Students will complete the Unit 6 Post-Assessment Students will make their own mini-quilts in order to learn more about shapes and fractions Students will determine the number of lines of symmetry and make a graph based on observations. Students will make copies of their favorite block. Then, they will explore slides (translations), flips (reflections), and turns (rotations, are used to create unique ways to arrange the blocks into a mini-quilt. April Number Corner Focus: This month’s Calendar Markers feature fractions of a whole and fractions of a set During Daily Rectangle this month, students will find the area of various rectangles. Students will continue to work on mastering their addition facts to 20. Students and the teacher will play a new game called Reach the Joey, hopping along the number line in increments of 1, 5, and 10, and more challenging amounts during this month’s Number Line workout.
