This was the first MSc course of its type established in the UK. Since establishment, the course has changed so that both Medical and Clinical Oncologists benefit from the compulsory and advanced modules, four of which allow simultaneous study for Royal College of Radiologists Fellowship examinations (recognised by the College as UK training). Its major aim is to deliver, an iacadernic ,and clinical, understanding, of modern oncology. The researchcomponent.ofthe courseallowsstudentsto receive practical training in planning"implementipg and.interpretinq. cf piece ',of research and. together these form a specialised postgraduate degree that helps in attaining the :hlghest professional advancement in Oncology. The Prize Dr Ahamad will graduate with a Master of Science in Oncology from the University of Manchester in 2003. Her degree consisted of 8 lecture modules covering all aspects of current cancer research and treatment that are examined by dissertation or written examination. It is taught by established experts from the University of Manchester, the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research and invited specialist lecturers from the UK and Europe. One third of her degree consisted of a clinical based research project that has been examined by thesis. Dr Ahamad was awarded a discretionary prize in 2000 by the Christie Hospital Medical Education Committee in recognition of her outstanding performance in the MSc examinations of that year. She is one of only 2 students (out of 35 students) to have been awarded this prize since the course started in 1995. An innovatorin curricular development; it was the first UK Faculty to adopt fully problem-basedlearning in Medicine and Dentistry. In the 2000 independent review of its teachingincluding the postgraduate programmes, the Medical School attained maximumscores in all areas. The Faculty has 1,500 staff and an annual budget of £30million. Its student population comprises over 3,500 candidates registered forundergraduate degree (including intercalated-year degree) and diplomaprogrammes and 1000 postgraduates on award-bearing courses. Its annualresearch income of £17 million is approximately one third of the total for theUniversity of Manchester. For graduate students, the Faculty forms part of theUniversity's Graduate School in Science, Engineering and Medicine, but retains ahigh degree of autonomy.

The Christie Hospital

The Christie Hospital NHS Trust is the largest cancer treatment centre of its kind inEurope, and an international leader in cancer research and development. TheChristie covers a population of 3.5 million and treatments include radiotherapy,chemotherapy, surgery, transplants and endocrinology. Every year approximately11,000 new patients registered; 15,000 in-patient stays; 14,500 day-case stays;and 139,500 outpatient attendances. Approximately 1,700 staff work on the Trustsite, plus over 200 volunteers. The Hospital was first opened as the CancerPavilion and Home for Incurables in 1892. Nine years later, in November 1901, itwas named The Christie Hospital.
