Canvasser Position Description ABOUT: My School DC is the common application and common lottery for all DC public schools (DCPS) and participating public charter schools. The common lottery allows parents to rank which DC public school and charter schools they would like their children to attend through a single, streamlined process, thereby ensuring a more efficient application process and a broader range of school options for more DC families. We are recruiting volunteers and hiring canvassers who will act as application coaches who will sign up parents through the common lottery application. JOB DESCRIPTION: Seeking Canvassers to serve as the frontline staff for the campaign. Canvassers will be responsible for executing the field program to educate and enroll families in the common lottery for Washington DC’s traditional and charter schools. Canvassers will conduct direct contact with community members through direct door-to-door conversations and through canvassing at popular gathering places – such as metros, bus stops, grocery stores, and other high traffic locations. Canvassers will complete a comprehensive training on Common Lottery application process, benefits of enrollment, and partner organizations like My School DC, DC Public Schools, and public charter schools. Canvass staff work on the ground in neighborhoods across Washington, DC and report to the campaign field organizers. RESPONSIBILITIES: Door-to-door canvassing in (minimum) 3 hour shifts Hot spot canvassing in (minimum) 3 hour shifts Representing My School DC at various community events Working directly with their Field Organizer to ensure that turf goals are being met Maintaining the highest regard for data integrity Training and recruiting volunteers and community members to events REQUIREMENTS: Strong desire to work in the field of public service, grassroots organizing, and political engagement Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required Ability to walk door-to-door consistently Ability to use a tablet and laptop accurately Detail oriented, with an ability to think creatively and critically Previous campaign experience is a plus Fluency in Spanish or Amharic is a plus Passion for quality public education and equal access to a first class education for all children regardless of social class, race, ethnicity, and income CONTACT: Interested applicants should email the following: resume, cover letter, and three (3) professional references to [email protected] . 270 Strategies & My School DC are committed to diversity among its staff, and recognizes that its success requires the highest commitment to obtaining and retaining a diverse staff.
