    Business, residents have your sayMoorabool Shire wants to hear from local business operators and community members in a new online survey. Mayor Paul Tatchell has urged residents and business owners to complete the survey aimed at guiding the development of Moorabools new economic development strategy. Answers to the survey can be taken till 5pm, Friday, August 8. The survey is available at www.haveyoursaymoorabool.com.au.

    Shire goes on showMoorabools tourism assets were showcased to visitor information centre co-ordinators from across the state last week as part of the Victoria Tourism Industry Councils annual summit. Participants sampled a range of attractions and cafes in Moorabool shire, with stops made at Lal Lal Falls, Kryal Castle, St Annes Winery, Mill Cottage Caf and Werribee Gorge.

    Councils unite on emergencies Moorabool council is one of five central Victorian councils that will use a $50,000 grant from the federal government to develop a regional approach to helping communities recover from natural disasters. Moorabool, Macedon Ranges, Mitchell, Mount Alexander and Hepburn shires will use the funds to develop shared emergency relief and recovery guidelines and training for staff across the municipalities. The project is due to start in September and will take a year to complete.

    Put on your best frock or suit and tie, grab a mask and head to Melton to raise money for a good cause. Tabcorp Park will host this years Melton Masquerade Ball with part of the proceeds going to the Cancer Council-assisting Relay for Life. The night promises to be a raging success, with a three-course meal and performances by Kelli Brogan and Hot Ice.     100% of your fi re levy goes to our fi re servicesLast year, the Victorian Government replaced the Fire Services Levy with a fairer system, as recommended by the Victorian Bushfi res Royal Commission. Now every property owner contributes a fair share to Victorias fi re services, not just those with adequate insurance. Eligible pensioners and veterans also receive a $50 concession.

    100 per cent of the fi re levy goes to support greater funding of the operations of the Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade. This includes fi refi ghters, staff and volunteers, training, community education, protective clothing, vital lifesaving equipment and more than 1,200 fi re stations and 2,300 trucks.

    Each year, Victorias fi refi ghters attend more than 78,000 incidents, including road accidents and rescues, bush and grass fi res, fi res in the home, and workplace incidents. Its a fairer fi re levy.

    Bacchus Marsh and Melton are gaining the benefits of a dedicated breast cancer nurse, thanks to funding from the McGrath Foundation. Sue Bartlett, (picturd) who is based at Bacchus Marsh Community Health Centre, provides support to people affected by breast cancer and offers physical, psychological and emotional support from diagnosis to treatment and beyond.

    With many years experience, Im aware of the impact a diagnosis of breast cancer can have on both the person affected and their family, not only physically but emotionally, she said.

    Some know theyll never be cured and have to live with chronic illness.

    Breast cancer is Australias third- most-common cancer, with about 15,000 women diagnosed every year.

    A vision for a Ballan-wide arboretum may soon become a reality with the help of generous donations and community support.

    Earlier this year, a group of Ballan residents launched their novel vision for Ballan to become an arboretum by committing to the importance and beauty of Ballans trees.

    Ballan Arboretum group member Stephanie Day said the vision of the plans supporters had since sparked interest from many other groups and locals, with donations for tree-planting projects rolling in and new projects under way.

    Ms Day, who has a background in horticulture, said trees were incredibly important for the community.

    This project of ours is about infrastructure because a tree is about the infrastructure, she said. We have to leave a legacy in 25 years time for the next generation of people who live in Ballan.

    Thats our idea, that were planning for the future, not just for now.

    While traditional arboretums are normally contained within botanic gardens, the group feels the notion could be grown to support a new and creative concept for Ballan.

    A Moorabool-based academic, Michael Howard, has jumped on board with his RMIT landscape architecture students, who will work on designs for tree planting in Ballan in addition to their academic studies.

    The students, who visited Ballan last week, will familiarise themselves with the town, research arboretums and investigate how an arboretum could be extended to encompass the entire town.

    The Ballan Quilt and Craft Group also appreciated the vision and has donated $5000 to the cause.

    The group will use the donation to plant deciduous trees at Ballans eastern and western entrances, working in collaboration with Moorabool council.

    The group has also received donations from the Ballan & District Chamber of Commerce and from individual residents.

    Planting is expected to start next year. The Ballan Arboretum group is committed to developing the arboretum concept in partnership with the community and the council.

    With the launch of a new social media group, mothers in Moorabool have a new place to connect and find information about breastfeeding.

    Moorabool for Mothers Inc has launched a new Facebook page the Breastfeeding in Moorabool Group to provide a place for the community to share, discuss the subject of breastfeeding and raise awareness of its importance.

    Website editor Nichole Russell hopes more people will join the page and add to the conversations.

    Its quick and easy for people to get onto Facebook and find out whats available and to be able to share their stories, she said.

    Ms Russell said the launch of the group page was important for Moorabool because the breastfeeding rate in the shire was lower than the state average.

    The idea is that breastfeeding is a natural thing to do, she said.

    But its also something that doesnt come naturally to everybody. Its often a learned experience and if people dont have friends and family to support them or share their experiences they need to look elsewhere because its beneficial for mothers and babies.

    The group is open to anyone, from mothers, family members and friends who are supporting a breastfeeding mother, to health professionals who want to find out information or share information with the group.

    Burglars strike twiceTwo Hillside properties close to each other were robbed late last month. Burglars broke into a building site overnight on Friday, July 25, and the next day jemmied the door of a portable office to steal a laser level. The other incident was at an IGA supermarket, where would-be robbers smashed a window about 5am and forced open a metal roller door. Nothing was stolen, but three men in hooded jumpers and gloves were recorded on CCTV.

    Number plate theftNumber plates were stolen from three cars outside the Hogs Breath Caf at Woodgrove shopping centre overnight on July 28.

    Tools still a targetTray utilities with metal toolboxes continue to be a target for the theft of tools, with another two offences committed in Brookfield in late July. Most offences occur in late evening or early morning.

    Knife bandit grabs cashA man carrying a brown-handled knife threatened the owner of the Watervale Lotto News and Gift store in Taylors Hill on July 24 and demanded money.He fled after being given a small amount of cash. Police say the offender was about 183cm tall and unshaven. He wore a blue, red and grey hooded jacket, blue jeans and white runners.     August is here, and hopefully the worst of winter is behind us. Its been a real challenge getting out of bed on those chilly mornings and I, for one, am looking forward to spring.

    Despite the wintery weather, Council has been busy planning and delivering some fabulous initiatives for the community, like our exciting Community Engagement Expos that kicked off in Diggers Rest last week.The Expos give residents the chance to have their say on key local issues, including transport, safety, suburb naming and more. So, if you missed the Diggers Rest Expo, be sure to get along to one of the others being held throughout the City over the next couple of weeks.     I know that I speak for all of Council when I express my deep sadness following the devastating air disaster in Ukraine. Many of our residents are struggling with the loss of the van den Hende family, beloved members of the Eynesbury community.

    It was heart warming to see so many people come together at the recent memorial, supporting each other in their grief, and paying respect to a family that had such a profound impact on their neighbours, school friends and team mates. They will be missed by those who knew them, and our thoughts are with their family and friends, both locally and abroad. A National Day of Mourning has been declared for Thursday tragedy, with a memorial service to take place in Melbourne.

    To help manage exceptional levels of population growth, Melton City Council is proposing to establish 11 new suburbs across the municipality. In planning for this growth, most existing suburbs will remain unaffected, but some suburbs will have their boundaries moved and name changed. Residents who are directly affected will receive a letter from Council and information brochures will be widely available. Together with a committee, made up of local residents, representatives of indigenous, history and business groups and Councillors, we have developed a shortlist of suburb names and over the next month or so, Council is asking residents to vote for their favourite names.     Students and staff at Bacchus Marsh College are preparing to do without important aspects of their lives as part of this years 40 Hour Famine.

    Food and Facebook are among the many things students will give up for 40 hours on the weekend of August 15-17 to help fight poverty.

    Students and staff who take up the challenge will put poverty in the spotlight by raising awareness and funds to help World Visions work in communities around the world.

    Student programs co-ordinator Sonia Reid said students liked to challenge themselves by choosing to give up technology, often choosing not to use their phones or social media.

    This is the third year the school will take part in the event and its aiming to raise $5000 for the cause.

    Conventions, which were hosted in each state, Ms Reid and student leaders are encouraging students and teachers to sign up for the famine or sponsor someone who has.

    Our job is to encourage as many people to join the 40 Hour Famine as we can, Ms Reid said.

    The kids have made posters and published articles in the newsletter, and teachers and students have spoken at assemblies.
