New Mexico Highlands University is pleased to invite you to pursue your graduate degree in social work at our School of Social Work. Our school has been accredited by the Council on Social Work Education for over 30 years and is the oldest School of Social Work in New Mexico.

Our school prides itself as having a curriculum that focuses on educating social work practitioners to work specifically with Hispanic and American Indian populations of New Mexico and the southwest.

Our graduate program offers three (3) distinct areas of program concentration/specialty: Clinical Practice, Government Non-Profit Management and Bilingual/Bicultural (Spanish/English) Clinical Practice. General Admission RequirementsThe School of Social Work seeks to admit candidates to its graduate programs that demonstrate a personal and professional commitment to a career in Social Work, a readiness to pursue graduate education and a willingness to make a positive contribution in the lives of others. Candidates best suited for a career in Social Work must be motivated to work in the human services field, have demonstrated academic potential, and have excellent writing and oral skills. A candidate must also possess the interpersonal qualities to work with multicultural and diverse populations regardless of differences in social class, economic status, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical disabilities, ethnicity and culture.

The areas of concentration and program timeframe differ by site. The four areas of concentration are: 1) Clinical Practice, 2) Government Non-Profit MSW 3) Government Non-Profit Dual Degree (MSW & MBA) , and 4) Bilingual/Bicultural Social Work.

2. A baccalaureate grade point average of 3.0 or higher in the major (on a 4.0 scale).

measurement will be determined from the Career Objectives Statement submitted and the psychosocial summary paper.

Transfer ApplicantsStudents wishing to transfer into the School of Social Work must meet the general admission requirements along with the following:

1. Must be transferring from a CSWE accredited Social Work Program.2. Courses must be completed within five years from the date of enrollment. 3. Transfer students must complete at least the equivalent of one academic

year at NMHU or one of our Center sites (Only courses with an earned A or B are transferrable).

The School will accept up to one year of graduate credits from another institution towards the MSW degree. The School of Social Work does not accept transfer of course credit from non-accredited schools of Social Work.

International StudentsInternational students must be admitted to the University Graduate School prior to, or in conjunction with their application to the School of Social Work. All international applicants are subject to the University’s requirements, including the financial statement and the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) examination.

Application ProcessAll applicants seeking admission to the MSW Program must complete and submit the following information in order for the application to be considered for review. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required.

*All application materials should be sent specifically to the School of Social Work at: NMHU, School of Social Work, Box 9000, Office of Admissions, Las Vegas, NM 87701

1. Graduate Application for the School of Social Work. The original needs to be submitted with one additional copy for processing purposes.

2. Official transcript(s). One from each post-secondary institution. All transcripts must be mailed directly from the institution to the School of Social Work (a student copy showing the conferred degree may be sent until officials are received).

3. Reference Forms. The three (3) reference forms provided in this booklet should be mailed directly to the School of Social Work or faxed to (505) 454-3290. It is recommended that applicants provide references from individuals who are familiar with their academic achievement and the social work potential of the applicant such as: faculty members, supervisors or field practicum supervisors, or individuals who can attest to work habits, collegial relationships, or an individual who can attest to working relationships with clients. It is necessary to submit a reference form from your Field Practicum Supervisor for Advanced Standing Applicants only. References from relatives are not accepted.

4. Employment history. Please include month and year of employment. We are interested in determining an applicant’s human service employment. List the paid positions you have held and provide a brief description of your duties. If you have not held a position in the human service field, list the three (3) most recent paid employment positions. A resume is acceptable.

5. Volunteer Experience. Please include month and year of experience. List your volunteer experience/positions and provide a brief description of your duties. We are interested in your experience as a volunteer, preferably within the area of human services. A resume is acceptable.

6. Career Objective Narrative Statement. Please respond to the questions asked on the application in narrative form. The purpose is to provide you the opportunity to articulate your goals and reasons for applying to the graduate program. Applicants should provide information on how they became interested in this field, their personal characteristics and skills and relevant experience. The applicant should describe personal, political, social, and professional relationships that have contributed to their interest in the professional practice of Social Work. Applicants should explain how these relationships influenced their decision to become a social work professional and undertake graduate work. In addition, applicants who include the contributions they hope to make as a professional Social Worker. Answer each question honestly and fully. Limit your responses to 6-8 typewritten, double-spaced pages. Make sure that answers are clearly numbered to correspond with each question. Include your name on each sheet. The written quality and content of this narrative is a critical part in reviewing the application (6-8 pages, submit 2 copies).

Application FeeA $50.00 non-refundable application fee is required of all applicants who have never attended NMHU or the School of Social Work. Applicants who have attended NMHU must submit a $35.00 non-refundable application fee. Submit a check or money order with your application made payable to: NMHU, Box 9000, School of Social Work, Las Vegas, NM 87701

Deadline(s) Early application is strongly encouraged. February 15, is the priority deadline for submitting application materials and securing your position for entrance in the fall semester of that same year. Non-priority admission will be considered for those who apply after this date. However, the School often has more qualified candidates than available space. As a result, non-priority applicants cannot be assured of admission. Based off of the recommendation of the Admissions Committee, late applicants may be placed on a waiting list or may be admitted to another concentration area. Application files are not reviewed until all materials have been received. Applications will be accepted until all concentrations are filled.

Admission ProcessAll applications are reviewed on a competitive basis based on GPA, human services work, volunteer experience, references, the quality of the responses to the questions in the Career Objective Narrative Statement, professional paper (Advanced Standing Applicants Only), and overall essential attributes to the program. Based off of the applicant’s final rating, a recommendation will then be made to the School Dean. A letter of admission or denial will then be sent to from the School of Social Work. Applicants admitted into the program must notify the School in writing of their intent to accept the admission and submit a non-refundable $50.00 holding fee, which is applied to the student’s tuition upon enrollment. Applicants not admitted may reapply for admission and must submit a new application

Admission StatusStudent’s who meet the general criteria, are admitted as “Regular Status”. Students who fail to meet one or more of the criteria, may be placed on “Provisional Status” until the provision has been met. Any student who has had a felony conviction charge or been accused of a crime will need to provide supporting documentation before the file can be reviewed for admission. The paperwork will be sent to you upon request only.

Field PracticumThe MSW program requires all students to be enrolled in Field Practicum through their program of study. A total of sixteen (12) credit units are required during the two years of the program. The Field Practicum provides instruction and experience in applying classroom knowledge in working with a specific client group within an agency setting. Students are supervised by an agency Instructor (a licensed MSW practitioner). The Agency Instructor and Field Consultant (a member of the Social Work faculty), monitor the student’s performance.

In the first year, Field Practicum students are placed in a social service agency where they learn generalist practice methods working with individuals, groups, families, organizations, and communities. Students are required to develop specific learning objectives in consultation with their Agency Instructor and Field Consultant that incorporate and apply classroom knowledge to working with specific clients, groups, or organizations. Students in field practicum are required to register in the co-requisite Field Seminar I in order to apply classroom knowledge to their Field Practicum. Students are placed with an agency two full days (16 hours) per week, per academic year or 5 days (40 hours) per week for the summer semester.

Two-Year and Advanced Standing students begin their Field Practicum in the fall semester and are in the same practicum setting for two semesters. Part-Time students begin their first year practicum placement during the second year of their program. The second year field practicum must be completed in the student’s chosen area of concentration.

Student StipendsThe School offers stipends to students who wish to pursue a career in Child Protective Services under the Title IV-E Stipend Program in partnership with the Children Youth and Families Department (CYFD). Students awarded a stipend must conduct their Field Practicum with an office of the Children Youth and Families Department for one academic year. The average stipend amount for a full-time student is $11,000 per academic year. The amount is pro-rated for part-time program students.

Upon completion of the MSW program, stipend recipients must work for CYFD for a period of 18 months for each academic year a stipend is received. Stipend application information is provided to all students at the time of notification of admission. Applications can also be downloaded from the School of Social Work website. The application deadline is June 1st for the following academic school year.

Financial Aid If you will be applying for financial aid, it is important to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form is required for any financial aid, scholarships, loans, etc. The NMHU office of Financial Aid awards financial aid according to individual need. The deadline for submitting the FAFSA is March 1, and is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The NMHU code is 002653. You may want to contact the Financial Aid Office at 1-800-379-4038 if applying after the deadline.

Colorado Students: Colorado students are able to apply for in-state tuition rates. The waiver form can be obtained from the Registrar’s Office by calling 1-877-850-9064 or on-line at www.nmhu.edu.

Navajo Tribe Members: Registered members of the Navajo tribe who reside anywhere on the reservation are considered New Mexico residents and are eligible for lower in-state tuition. Each year, the BIA provides grants to assist eligible Native American students in meeting their educational costs. The amounts of the grants vary according to the student’s financial need. The funds are available through the student’s BIA area office or tribal scholarship office. Check with the tribal agency to ascertain program requirements and deadlines.

Graduate AssistantshipsThe School has a limited number of Graduate Assistantships available. For more information, please contact the Graduate Office at 1-877-850-9064 for an application.

Concentration DescriptionsWhen applying for admission, consider your own interest and experience when selecting an area of concentration. Also consider the setting you envision yourself practicing in. It is discouraged for the student to switch concentrations once they have started taking courses.

Clinical Practice – will provide advanced clinical skills and knowledge to be an effective clinical practitioner to work with individuals, families and groups from diverse backgrounds.

Government Non-Profit – will prepare students for leadership and professional careers in federal, state and local government and private and non-profit organizations. This concentration will focus on course content in the areas of policy analysis, management, budgeting, finance, human resource development, economics and research.

Bilingual/Bicultural Practice – will provide the student with social work clinical and community skills necessary to work with Latino individuals, groups, and families in a bilingual/bicultural setting.

Government Non-Profit Dual Degree - will prepare students for leadership and professional careers in federal, state and local government and private and non-profit organizations. This concentration will focus on course content in the areas of policy analysis, management, budgeting, finance, human resource development, economics and research. The student can then continue on into the School of Business and complete an MBA for a total of seven semesters.

LicensureAll MSW graduates are required to test for licensure in order to practice social work. For further questions or for an application, please contact the New Mexico Board of Social Work Examiners at (505) 476-4890 or the licensing board in your state.

Instructions for Psychosocial AssessmentThis requirement is for applicants applying to the Advanced Standing Program Only. This is not required of students applying to the 2-year or part-time program.

Please choose one of the following four films as the basis for your psychosocial assessment, theory-based analysis, and treatment plan:

The Color Purple (this is also a book by Alice Walker). This film/book depicts intergenerational processes in an African American family. The psychosocial assessment should be on the character 'Celie'.

Ordinary People (This is also a book by Judith Guest). This film/book depicts intergenerational processes in an Anglo family. The psychosocial assessment should be on the character 'Conrad'.

El Norte This film depicts intergenerational processes in a Latin American immigrant family. The psychosocial assessment should be on either the 'Enrique' or 'Rosa' character.

The Doe Boy: This film depicts intergenerational processes in a Cherokee family. The psychosocial assessment should be on the character 'Young Hunter'-the boy.

Note: In order to proceed with this assignment, you will have to choose a point in time in the development of the character and his/her story to begin you assessment. Also, you will have to creatively insert yourself in the story as the social worker.
