3° SUNDAY IN ADVENT TIME Reflection in preparation for next weekend’s Gospel

Each Advent season, we prepare to welcome Jesus into the inns and sta-bles of our hearts. But Jesus’ coming wasn’t welcomed by everyone with choirs of angels. For St. Joseph, the first coming of Jesus was a bit more complicated. “When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but be-fore they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spir-it.” For Joseph, opening his heart (and home) to Jesus meant, at best, appearing to all the world like a man who had impregnated his wife out of wedlock. At worst, he appeared a cuckold, raising the child of another man. God doesn’t always appear the way we expect. For some of us, the birth of Christ is a bit relationally complicated. Per-haps over the past few months, a loved one has died. This Christmas, you’re taking it upon yourself to keep up the traditions and hold the fami-ly together. Welcoming Jesus means welcoming grief. Perhaps it’s a diffi-cult relative (or two or three) and it’s all you can do to bite your tongue and swallow your pride while they’re under your roof. Welcoming Jesus means welcoming strife, discord, and tension. Yet “do not be afraid,” the angel says. Do not be afraid. Why? Because we celebrate the birth of “Emmanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” Before Jesus’ earthly ministry would begin, Jesus would lose his father, Joseph. God is with us in our grief. Wherever Jesus went, he stirred up controversy and faced down challenging personalities. God is with us in our stress. The trick is, like Joseph, to allow supernatural grace to pre-vail. Joseph was a good man, filled with natural virtue in that he didn’t want to “expose [Mary] to shame.” Yet he was prepared to “divorce her quietly” all the same. Our natural abilities only take us so far. Where is receiving Jesus complicated this Christmas season? Are you relying on your own strength to get you through, or are you truly ready to accept the grace of Emmanuel, God with us?

3rd Sunday of Advent December 15th, 2019

Who did you come to see? A version of this question is posed by Jesus many times in the Gospels. He asks it of Andrew and John when they begin to follow him. He asks it of Mary Magdalene in the garden of the resurrection. He asks it in today’s Gospel. “What did you go out to the desert to see?” There is something innately human about “seeing.” Animals have eyes — some with much more power-ful vision than our own — but that’s not the kind of seeing Jesus is talking about. We could phrase the question several other ways. “What are you looking for?” “What are you longing for?” “Whom do you seek?” It is in seeing for ourselves that our suspicions or hypotheses are confirmed, that our desires discover their fulfillment, and that we can rest for a moment in certainty. John the Baptist sought certainty of Jesus’ identity. “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” Jesus sends word to him based on the testimony of sight, observations of the mighty deeds Jesus has begun to work. “Go and tell John what you hear and see.” God recognizes our desire to see. In the Incarnation, the Word is made flesh. The invisible is made visible. The supernatural is made manifest in an infant who can do little more than the most natural of movements as he feeds, cries, sleeps. We don’t need to wait for Christmas to see God. The work of God is all around us. Those blinded by sin “regain their sight.” People overcome backgrounds of poverty and violence to make world-changing contributions. Addicts grow and heal. Truth is spoken, and people listen. Let’s pray for the grace to see God’s movement in our lives this week. How have you seen the work of God?

El tercer Domingo de Adviento recibe el nombre de Gaudet, que significa alegría. “Estén siempre alegres en el Señor; se lo repito, estén alegres y tengan buen trato con todos” (Filipenses 4:4), dice la antífona de entrada. La oración colectiva también nos lleva a reflexionar en el significado permanente de esta alegría: “Mira, Señor, a tu pueblo que espera con fe la fiesta del nacimiento de tu Hijo, y concédele celebrar el gran mis-terio de nuestra salvación con un corazón nuevo y una inmen-sa alegría.” El Profeta Isaías lo afirma con sus palabras de esperanza a su pueblo: “¡Animo! no teman. He aquí que su Dios, vengador y justiciero, viene ya para salvarlos.” La Navidad se acerca y su luz nos envuelve y llena de esplen-dor. Todo el ambiente es de fiesta y preparación. Las celebra-ciones Marianas nos han dejado ese gozo de albergue y acogi-da al que lo necesita. Ha, si comprendiéramos el motivo de alegría que decimos celebrar, entenderíamos perfectamente que se debe a que Dios y su salvación están cerca. La alegría y la salvación van juntas, no se pueden separar, nos dice la Liturgia. Por este motivo, Juan se alegra desde la cárcel al escuchar la respuesta que Jesús le envía: “Los ciegos ven, los cojos andan, los leprosos quedan limpios de la lepra, los sor-dos oyen, los muertos resucitan y a los pobres se les anuncia el evangelio. Dichoso aquel que no se siente defraudado por mí.” Que la participación en la Eucaristía fomente actitudes que preparen a celebrar la Navidad en familia recordando y viviendo que Jesús nunca nos defraudará.

Reflexión en Preparación para el siguiente Domingo

El cuarto Domingo de Adviento prácticamente nos pone ya a las puertas de la Navidad, estemos listos o no. En unos días, celebraremos el nacimiento de nuestro Salvador. La figura importante en este domingo es María que ha concebi-do por obra del Espíritu Santo y pone al mundo al Emman-uel, Dios-con-nosotros. El Evangelio nos narra la duda de José, disipada por el ángel que Dios envía a él en sueños. “José, hijo de David, no dudes en recibir en tu casa a María, tu esposa, porque ella ha concebido por obra del Espíritu Santo. Dará a luz un hijo y tú le pondrás el nombre de Jesús, porque el salvará a su pueblo de sus pecados.” ¿Cuántas dudas existen aún en la sociedad sobre el Naci-miento del Mesías? “En Navidad Dios se nos dona todo donando a su Hijo, el Único, que es toda su alegría. Y sólo con el corazón de Ma-ría, la humilde y pobre hija de Sión, convertida en Madre del Hijo del Altísimo, es posible exultar y alegrarse por el gran don de Dios y por su imprevisible sorpresa. Que Ella nos ayude a percibir el asombro —estos tres asombros: el otro, la historia y la Iglesia— por el nacimiento de Jesús, el don de los dones, el regalo inmerecido que nos trae la salvación. El encuentro con Jesús nos hará también sentir a nosotros este gran asombro. Pero no podemos tener este asombro, no podemos encontrar a Jesús, si no lo encontra-mos en los demás, en la historia y en la Iglesia.”
