FROM THE PRINCIPAL Lisa Morresey

Kia ora koutou, Thank you to everyone who attended learning conferences. It is really important to establish early student, teacher and whānau relationships. The school wide percentage was 87%. If you did not attend the learning conference, you child’s class teacher will be following up for an alternate appointment time. We need to ensure that every child has their learning conference. Toilet and Vandalism We are having issues with vandalism and inappropriate toilet use currently. In fact, to a degree that we have not seen before. We have been will be reinforcing messages about appropriate toilet use, hygenic practices, flushing and respect for others. Students should be able to access bathrooms, as required. Given that we cannot supervise toilet use 24/7, we have asked students to go to the bathroom in pairs, if they are using bathrooms during class time. Obviously, each of cubicles is locked separately for individual privacy, but hopefully paired supervision will reduce further mischief and mayhem. It is an interesting time in New Zealand education currently. There are two bodies of work which you need to be aware of. Paid Union Meeting It’s Time/Kua Tae Te Wā In the week of 18 March, primary teachers and principals around the country who are NZEI Te Riu Roa members are heading to meetings to vote on whether to accept or reject the latest collective agreement offers from the government. They will also be voting on whether to take strike action should the offers be rejected. Teacher’s are really reluctant to go on strike again. I do not often comment on things of a political nature. But, I have not seen the profession in such turmoil in thirty years in education. Teachers and principals are feeling undervalued. There are real disparities in our education system between schools and between schooling sectors. I do not begrudge the work of our secondary colleagues, but, I think it is important for the community to understand why our teachers are fighting for pay parity. The same concerns also sit with our ECE colleagues. Currently, our colleagues in the secondary sector earn higher salaries, receive 5 hours curriculum release per week (primary is funded one hour per week)! Secondary schools have double the leadership staffing, plus guidance staffing, compared to primary schools that are the same size. In the secondary sector time is also given as you pick up leadership roles, in a primary/intermediate you do your leadership role on top of your 24 hour per week teaching contact time. Responsibility payments are also higher. I am concerned about the workload and additional expectations placed on our teachers. At a personal level, I worry for my staff. Teachers are working 50 - 60 hour weeks and more, in some cases. Teaching, meetings, road patrol, duties, coaching, extra-curricular, emails and calls home in the evenings. We work weekends and school holidays. In the holidays and the term breaks, school is a hive of activity. We meet for collaborative planning, professional learning and development and just to catch up on the terms work. Also, when a teacher only day is scheduled, teachers and students work an additional day at the end of the year. As a principal I worry about the recruitment and retention of teachers and the future of the profession. So whatever happens in the coming weeks - and what you hear in the media - please understand that we are working really hard for your children and we trying to do our very best for education, for our colleagues and for each and every student. TOMORROW’S SCHOOLS REVIEW

As part of the national Education Conversation | Kōrero Mātauranga, the Government is reviewing Tomorrow’s Schools – the name given to the reforms that dramatically changed the governance, management and administration of our schools nearly 30 years ago. After more than 200 meetings with people interested in education, the Independent Taskforce reported its findings to the Minister of Education in November 2018. Their report: Our Schooling Futures, Stronger Together l Whiria Ngā Kura Tūātinitini has now been released for public consultation. The report covers eight key issues: Governance; Schooling Provision; Competition and Choice; Disability and Learning Support; Teaching; Leadership; Resourcing; and Central Government Agencies. The Taskforce’s report makes a number of significant recommendations for changes to the current education system. Stakeholder feedback on the report and its recommendations will be critical to inform Government decision making in 2019.

ADOLESCENT PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE Beth Daniel, Health Nurse, will be working in our school each Monday from 10.45am – 12.45pm. Beth will be available to discuss with children any health issues they may have. This service is free and available on a referral basis. Key tasks of Public Health Nurse include:

The support of adolescents and parents to address youth health issues and concerns

Being an advocate for young people and their families

Providing free confidential self-referral clinics within the intermediate school settings

Following up referrals in the home and school. Referral to other agencies as appropriate eg, GP, Audiology, Mental Health, Sexual Health

PAID UNION MEETING

At 12.20pm, on Wednesday 20th March, the majority of our staff will be

attending the meeting which is to be held here at MMI.

There are two options for parents:

A) At 12.20pm your child can be collected from school or head home

independently.

B) At 12.20pm your child can stay at school and will be released at the

normal time of 2.45pm.

A full information letter will be emailed home, with all details, by the end of

the week.

Please return the slip at the bottom of that letter so we can prepare for those

students who may need to remain at school for the afternoon.

SPORTS INFORMATION

BASKETBALL TRIALS

Boys (both years) trial: Wednesday 20th March - 6.30am - 8am

Girls (both years) trial: Friday 22nd March - 6.30am - 8am

Venue: Mt Maunganui College Gymnasium Apologies for the early start but these were the only times available to us. All students must have registered to trial. If you have not done so already, click here to register:

If you wish to be in a school team, then you must trial. These are the only trial days, so you must attend. Please ensure you are in your school PE gear, appropriate indoor sports shoes (no black soles) and have a drink bottle.

MMI SURFING

On 1st March, Mount Maunganui Intermediate School ran the annual super 11 surf competition. It was a great day with 1-2 feet waves on offer at Tay St. The event is unique as it is a tag team format where surfers must work as a team as opposed to traditional individual surfing. There were 11 teams in the event, teams were made up of 3 boys and 1 girl. Finishing the event the two Mount Maunganui Intermediate teams placed first and second respectively. A very good result for our young surfers. A special thanks must go out to all the parents for their support and in particular Jamie Brock and Nathan Mouldey, who ran the judging and liaised with the teachers in charge. Also, thank you to Bay Boardriders, for their loan of equipment to help run a very successful surfing event.

Lunches will be delivered to the canteen and distributed to each classroom by our lunch monitors.

Follow the steps on the website, www.lunchonline.co.nz. You only need to register once and add a credit, after that is done it’s super easy to go in and order.

You can order in advance, but orders for the same day, must be received online by 9.00am.

If you have ordered online and your child is sick on that day you have until 9.00am to cancel the order. There will be no refunds if the order is not cancelled in time.

CHANGE OF DETAILS It would greatly assist us if you could please advise the office if you have any changes of address, phone numbers and emergency contact details. In the event of an emergency, sickness or injury we need to be able to contact someone who can collect your child.

FRIDAY ASSEMBLY Every Friday we have assembly and all students are required to wear their correct school uniform. This does not mean they can wear their PE gear, so please remind your child to wear their uniform to school every day and bring their PE gear in their bag, so they do not forget. Also, it would be appreciated if you do not pick up your child early on Fridays. We are in assembly from 1.30pm and it becomes difficult to locate children during this time.

SUBJECT FEES In 2019 the subject fees are set at $110.00. You can choose to pay $27.50 per term. These include:

The cost of these programmes are subsidised by the Board of Trustees. The subject fees must be paid if students wish to consume or to keep any item produced in these programmes.

Make the most of all that school pool practise, by getting into lessons today.

BaySwim is your local Learn To Swim school, with lessons for babies, pre-schoolers, school aged children and adults running 7 days a week at Baywave Aquatic Centre.

BaySwim offers medical one to one lessons, and Sensory swimming lessons, as well as small group lessons.

Bookings for the Term can be made at any point, as long as there are spaces, assessments are free, and all BaySwim members get to have unlimited pool practise while they are enrolled.
