Well attended student learning conferences where children develop and share their learning goals. This is establishing an early learning partnership between students, their parents and teacher.

Curriculum is responsive to the emerging adolescent.

An overarching theme each year promotes authentic and integrated learning.

Contexts for learning reflect children’s interest/voice.

Very inclusive for students who have high learning needs.

There is an improvement/inquiry mindset across the school.

Wide range of learning opportunities - specialist teachers - 42 - extracurricular opportunities counted.

Leadership opportunities for students.

International students well cared for and supported. As always, there are next steps, but we are pleased to say that the proposed next steps were in line with the next steps that we had already identified for ourselves. This included the introduction of a second language learning programme, which is now a mandatory requirement for year 7 and 8. To develop a more strategic approach to the long term sustainability of the whanau class - purpose, rationale and guidelines. To build teacher capability to culturally responsive curriculum and practices, to strengthen processes that support children to know their learning and next steps (specific) progressions. Use of achievement information to specifically inform planning/teaching to meet individual learning needs. A big thank you to our students, staff, Board of Trustees and our community for the wonderful hard work that we have all done to make MMI such a positive place to learn in. The full final report should be online by Christmas. Aiken Fellowship A few weeks ago, I shared some news with the MMI staff. In 2018 I will be taking up a 1 year secondment to the University of Auckland, Faculty of Education, Centre for Educational Leadership. In this role, I will be working as a facilitator and consultant to deliver leadership development contracts and services to organisations and schools. I will also be given one day per week to study Educational Leadership, at a post graduate level. I would like to sincerely thank the Board of Trustees, for allowing me the opportunity to work alongside world leading experts, in the field of school improvement and educational leadership. This is an exciting opportunity for me and for MMI and I look forward to growing as a leader and a professional, so that I may return to my role as principal in 2019. In 2018, Mrs Melissa Nelson will capably step into the acting principal role. Mrs Nelson will be supported by Mrs Beryl Harvey, our Deputy Principal and one of our team leaders who will act up in the second deputy principal’s position. This is an exciting opportunity for us to build depth and leadership capacity and experience for our staff. Congratulations Last week, it was with great pleasure that I was able to watch the MMI Jump Jam Team and the Omanu Boys Team take out national titles at the NZ Jump Jam Finals. Also, a big congratulation to our Mixed Open Water polo team, who won silver at the North Island Champs and to our PCT teams, who took 1st and 2nd place in the Bay of Plenty competition. This weekend we have 3 teams competing in the Future Problem Solving National’s. Mrs Woods and the teams leave for Auckland today. Shoes A reminder that we should all be in black roman sandals. If you are unable to purchase roman sandals, students are required to be in black winter shoes and socks. Enjoy a safe and enjoyable Guy Fawkes weekend. Ma te wa Ms M/Whaea Lisa Principal

SHORT TERM INTERNATIONAL STUDENT NEWS [email protected]

Ritsumeikan Junior High School On Tuesday, our Japanese group from Ritsumeikan Junior High School, left us to return home. They were part of 180 plus students from their school year level, who came to New Zealand on their annual school camp, with students hosted by several schools across Tauranga and Hamilton. We always hear what wonderful hosts our MMI families are and what a memorable experience we give these students. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has been a host, for this group and for others during the year. The school values your support and hopes that you have also enjoyed the experience.

We have 1 more group coming on 27 November – 5 December. This group is also Japanese, from Kyoto. Thank you to those who have offered to host students. If you completed and returned the necessary paperwork, I will be in touch with you soon with details of your student. Short term chinese students, Term 1, 2018 Next year, we have been asked to host two Chinese students for one month from the start of the school year. These students, both boys, aged 11, will require separate homestay accommodation. If you are interested, could you please contact me, Jane Howard, [email protected] for more information.

COLLECTING YOUR CHILD FOR APPOINTMENTS DURING SCHOOL

HOURS We do appreciate that you may not be able to avoid making medical appointments for your children during school hours, but we do ask that you please attempt to ensure that disruption to your child’s learning is kept to a minimum. Please try and avoid collecting your child on Friday afternoons, as they attend assembly from the end of lunchtime, normally until the bell rings at 2.45pm. It is difficult to find them in this instance and may disrupt the presentations at assembly, that other students and staff have spent time preparing. Also, on wet days, please make pick up arrangements with your child, at home, prior to the school day. Our school phone is for emergencies only. We often get children coming to use the phone to find out where they will be collected from if it is raining. Your child’s learning is important to us and to them and we aim to keep the interruptions to emergencies only, where possible. Thank you.

We would like to invite all students to submit their sporting achievements, if they would like to be considered for the sports awards. The criteria is to identify the top sports boy and girl in each year level group, plus an award for outstanding achievement in a single sport. Please include the following: national titles, regional titles, most valuable player awards, national tournament teams, club results and school sport results. All categories are awarded points in ranking order from national titles to school sport. A sports panel has been selected to deliberate over the sport applications. Please hand these to your classroom teacher by Friday 10th November. Forms can be collected from school office before or after school, or during breaks.

NORTH ISLAND WATER POLO SILVER MEDALISTS OPEN TEAM

Congratulations to our open water polo team who participated in the North Island Champs, in Auckland, last weekend. The team went through pool play unbeaten and met local rivals Aquinas College in the quarter finals. We played well to win the game 5-2 and progress through to the semi-final against Sacred Heart. We led the whole game and came through as victors 3-2. In the final we played St Peters Boys, who we have previously played in Winterfest and AIMS finals. After been down 1-3 at half time, we made a great comeback to draw level 3 all at the end of the game. This sent the game into a penalty shootout, which we unfortunately lost. Well done the team who have had a great season. Well done to Charlie Bury and Ruby Helm who were selected in the tournament team. A huge thank you to coaches Ryan Anderson and Bae Fountain, manager Brenda Anderson, Kellie Spee, plus all the supporters who travelled to support the team. The team was: Co-Captains - Matt Anderson and Gus Shivnan, Charlie Bury, Xavier Morrison, Jack Jones, Ethan Millington, Ethan Carrington, Harry McManaway, Blake West and Ruby Helm.

NORTH ISLAND WATER POLO 5TH EQUAL GIRLS TEAM

Our girls’ water polo team participated in the North Island Champs in Auckland last weekend. In pool play we won 3 games, and lost 2 games. In the cross over game for 5th and 6th we played St Kentigerns and drew 4 all, meaning we ended up 5th equal. Thank you to our coach, EJ Rieger, manager Emma Jones, plus all the supporters who helped out with transportation, cooking, and at the pool. Well done to the following girls: Captain - Quinn Farley, Grace Akroyd, Mia Thompson, Ellie Thompson, Olive Abrahams, Maya Carr-Manoit, Katie Parkinson, Imogen Coffey and Issy Reardon-Pollet.
