Thank You Muirfield High School

It is with great pleasure that I have joined the community

at Muirfield High School. Muirfield has a strong reputation

of being a supportive, warm and welcoming school; a

place where every young person can develop in an environment

conducive to teaching, learning and friendship. I have definitely found this

to be true in my first weeks here. I would like to acknowledge the

extremely warm welcome I have received since my arrival at Muirfield,

from students, staff and the parent community. I look forward to working

with you all to ensure that Muirfield High School continues to provide

wonderful opportunities so that every student can reach their potential.

Athletics Carnival 2018

On Friday 18th May the school held its annual Athletics Carnival at

Roxborough Park, Baulkham Hills. The day was brilliantly organised by Ms

Bligh and Mr Edmondstone, with an impressive number of attendees and

participants. Muirfield students continue to impress with their dedication to

all school events and we would like to congratulate all students on their

behaviour, their involvement and willingness to support their fellow

competitors. Congratulations also must go to all the student helpers for

their efforts in assisting teachers at the carnival and to our fabulous House

Captains who did an amazing job of rallying house spirit amongst

spectators and participants. It was a magnificent way to start the term.

Special acknowledgement must go to the skill and athleticism of our Age

Champions for 2018!

Assessment Task Due Dates

With Term 2 well underway, students have been busy preparing for and completing

assessment tasks. With a focus on personal improvement, they have been applying

themselves with diligence to produce their best work and are to be commended

on their efforts.

As part of the learning experience of school, adhering to NESA requirements and

addressing fairness, it is important for students to learn to adhere to due dates

regarding assessment tasks. Sometimes extenuating circumstances are involved

that prevent a student from completing a task by the due date. A formal process is

in place and the student concerned is required to speak to their teacher if they

need to gain special consideration for an extension.

This process is set up in the school to support students experiencing genuine

difficulty. If your child has difficulty working to due dates and deadlines,

organisation might be the issue. A suggested technique is to teach them to find the

end date and work backwards to plan their preparation times and activities. The

following website may assist with techniques and assignment ‘starters’:

http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/homework-and-study/other-subjects-and-assignments

As parents and carers, we appreciate how invested you are in your child’s future.

Together, in this learning community we are striving for success.

Semester One Reports

Semester One reports will be distributed to students by the end of this term. These

provide important feedback on the progress of every student in every class.

Whether it is through the reports or the day-to-day class lessons, research has shown

that feedback given to students by their teachers is one of the best ways to

enhance learning. The teachers’ comments give feedback to students; how the

student is engaged in class, what he/she has done well and what he/she needs to

do to improve upon their performance.

Page 4 Muirfield Matters

Muirfield the teachers put a great deal of time and effort into the massive task of

report writing. All students need to be moving forward in their achievement of

course outcomes and improving their skills.

Every year I challenge students to set themselves the goal of gaining a better

report than their previous one. This improvement process may, among many

things, involve catching up on work missed, doing further reading or research,

focusing on answering the questions asked, improving the setting out of

responses, participating more in class discussion (which helps to verbalise their

thoughts) and discussing work with the teacher.

Parent Teacher Evening

Year 8 and 10 Parent Teacher evening is scheduled for Tuesday 26th June, and

Year 7 and 9 Parent Teacher evening for Thursday 26th July. This is a great

opportunity for parents to meet teachers and gain valuable information on

student progress. It is also an excellent time to seek the most effective ways to

support students and their learning. We will be using the same online booking

system as last year so please look out for the email to come in the next few

weeks.

HSC Minimum Standards

A minimum standard of literacy and numeracy is required to receive the

HSC from 2020 to reflect the importance of literacy and numeracy for

success in daily life.

Students sitting the HSC in 2018 or 2019 do not need to meet the HSC

minimum standard.

Current Year 10 students who achieved a Band 8 or above in one or more of the

2017 Year 9 reading, writing and numeracy NAPLAN tests are recognised as

having met the HSC minimum standard in that area/s. Those students who did not

receive a Band 8 or above in the 2017 Year 9 NAPLAN tests will need to take the

minimum standard online tests between now and Year 12 to receive their HSC in

2020.

Page 5 Muirfield Matters

There will be multiple opportunities for your child to show they meet the HSC

minimum standard. The tests can be taken when your child is ready – be that this

year, in Year 11 or 12 or even after the HSC. The school will be providing an

opportunity for students to sit the writing test on Thursday 14 June. Further

opportunities to sit these tests will be provided by the school in Terms 3 and 4.

From this year, Year 9 NAPLAN tests will no longer be available as an early way for

students to demonstrate the standard.

Uniform

As the winter months are upon us, it is important that students continue to wear the

correct school uniform. Wearing of correct uniform signifies that they belong to our

learning community and are ready to participate actively in their learning. Please

ensure that your child has the correct school jumper and/or jacket, available from

the uniform shop.

A school operates the same as a company or business. We have safety

requirements that we must adhere to, as well as community expectations

governing our uniform code. If a student presents at the deputy’s office to question

the reason for a uniform, we remind them that many places require a uniform. If

they are working in a trade, they must wear protective clothing, including

footwear. If they are working in an office, they may have a dress code. If they have

a part time job in a fast food outlet or in retail, they must abide by the uniform

requirements befitting that position. A school is no different to any other business. A

typical adolescent response to this is ”but they pay me”. Our response is, “So do

we, we pay with education.”

Thank you to all parents and carers who work hard to ensure their children are in full

school uniform every day.

A Final Thought

Our PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) system continues to recognise the many

wonderful behaviours our students exhibit. Respecting yourself, others and property

makes you a star ready to actively participate in your learning and be responsible

for your achievements. Celebrate your successes this term, you all deserve them!

Young Women’s Leadership Seminar

On Thursday the 17th of May, we attended the Young Women’s Leadership Seminar

held by Parliamentary Education at the Parliament of New South Wales. We arrived

at 9:00 am and were addressed by a

member of the NSW Parliamentary

Education program.

We learnt about the importance of

women’s involvement in parliament and

the issues women in leadership positions

are faced with today, and also discussed

the concepts of feminism and gender

equality. We were then able to view both

the legislative assembly and legislative

council as various members of parliament

presented potential new bills, and were

even lucky enough to witness a division.

After that, we had the opportunity to

participate in discussion with three female

members of parliament, who told us how

they had come to be members, the

struggles they encountered on the way,

and how they overcame those struggles.

Overall, it was a very informative and inspiring day, and we learnt that it is extremely

important that women are represented equally through leadership positions, even

though it can be challenging at times.

The Athletics Carnival

Page 7 Muirfield Matters

The 2018 Athletics Carnival was a great success.

With an amazing effort from the Student Executive

Team in organising and running the BBQ, cake stall

and canteen, each member worked along slide

their fellow peers in an effort to raise funds for their

year 12 formal and graduation.

With a big congratulations to each student

competing and a massive thankyou to Ms Bligh, Mr

Pearson and Mr Edmondstone for their countless

hours of effort and organisation which saw the day

run smoothly. There was an extensive spectrum of

house colours from teachers and students as well as

the year 12s, who had a twist to this year’s carnival

with their dress up theme; “What do you want to be

when you grow up?” which produced an array of

surprising and creative costumes.

With great luck, the carnival had beautiful weather

and the sunshine merely added to both the

tremendous participation and sportsmanship of all

students. With an energised, positive and happy

atmosphere, a commendable congratulations goes

to the 2018 champion Athletic House; Thorpe.

Year 8 Science Excursion to Taronga Zoo

Page 8 Issue 5 2018

On the 25th May, Year 8 went on an excursion to Taronga Zoo, to support their study

of Ecology. After arriving at the Zoo, students had an opportunity to observe some

of the enclosures on their way to the seal show. They were able to stop and admire

the Gorillas and the Meerkats.

At the seal show, students learnt about the impacts that humans are having on the

oceans. They were made aware of the pollution of the oceans by plastic and

fishing gear and the effect

this can have on the

ecosystem and the animals

and plants living there. They

were encouraged to look for

sustainable fisheries when

buying seafood. One lucky

student Grace Montgomery

was able to command the

seal to jump from the upper

level into the water. Luckily,

she wasn’t splashed!

After the seal show, some students had the opportunity to see the bird show while

others were having a lesson on Ecology. A great attraction of this lesson was the

seal swimming behind the presenter while she was talking. Students were able to

meet and pat a ring tailed possum, a snake, a green tree frog, a freshwater turtle

and a stick insect.

The Hills Young Leader’s Afternoon Tea at Parliament House

The Hills Young Leader’s Afternoon Tea was hosted by Baulkham Hills MP David

Elliot at the State Parliament. I had the pleasure of attending this event with my

fellow Muirfield High School Captain Lily Tomlin, and Vice Captains Reegan Bain

and Lily Simpson.

In each of our capacities as leaders, we were honoured to represent the school at

this valuable ‘working luncheon’. Joined by Premier Gladys Berejiklian, Minister for

Education Rob Stokes, and various key business and emergency service leaders in

the Baulkham Hills area, we were well and truly in the presence of some exemplar

pillars of our community.

We were also able to engage in conversations with students from other schools in

our area, learning of the many initiatives embarked on in our community. An

incredibly beneficial opportunity, I can confidently say all four of us took away

many core principles centred on what it takes to become a successful leader and

what it means to promote and encourage positive change in our communities.

We would also like to thank Mr Finley for very generously giving up his time to

accompany us on the exciting evening, where we are sure he got as much out of

it as we all did.

“As a year 12 student, the opportunity to see where leaders in our

community have taken their careers was very helpful and insightful”

Lily Tomlin

“Hearing the stories of many special guests and how their journeys

began with leadership at school was an affirmation of the benefits to

be reaped from helping others in our community”

Reegan Bain

“The words of Jason Heffernan, Commissioner of the NSW Rural Fire

Service, were particularly encouraging, delivering a reminder to follow

your passions over financial rewards”

also have some extra black fleece jackets in stock for those that missed out on the

online ordering earlier this year. The uniform shop is open at the following times:

Canteen – help urgently needed

Our canteen offers a valuable service to our school community. In addition to our 2

ladies who manage the canteen, we are reliant on parent volunteers to assist us

with food prep and serving the students at recess and lunch times. Without the

assistance of our parent volunteers we are not able to effectively run the canteen.

Employing more staff would mean that prices must increase. We would like to keep

prices as affordable as possible for our families, whilst still offering healthy and tasty

food.

We are needing a few more volunteers to join our roster. Volunteers assist Jannine in

the canteen from 08H30 to 13H30, Monday to Friday during school term. If you are

able to assist one or more days a month we would love to hear from you. If you are

not able to stay for a full shift but can only do an early morning or late morning

session, we would also love to hear from you.

Page 12 Issue 5 2018

Now that winter is here, it is inevitable that a parent volunteer will get sick. Life also

happens and there are times where volunteers cannot come in due to an

unforeseen event or a child getting sick.

In these cases we find it very difficult to get a volunteer to come in at short notice to

help us for the day. We would like to have an emergency contact list that we can

fall back on in these situations. Please let our canteen ladies know if you are happy

to be on the emergency contact list.

If you do not like the idea of being on the roster on a regular basis, but are happy to

only assist when we are in a pickle, please let us know that you are happy to be on

the emergency contact list only. Grandparents are an important part of our families

and communities. We value our grandparents at Muirfield and welcome

grandparents to come and help us in the canteen.

We look forward to hearing from you as without your help we cannot run this service

for our school community. Please contact the canteen ladies directly on

[email protected].

Date to diarise: P&C General meeting

Our next P&C general meeting will be held on the 13th June at 7.30pm in the

common room. It is a great opportunity to find out what is happening in our

wonderful school community. We look forward to seeing you there.

PARENT AND CAREGIVERS PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE INTO THE SCHOOL

GROUNDS

In the interests of student safety, parents and caregivers are not

permitted to drive onto school grounds at any time, including before

or after school, to drop off or collect students, or to

attend meetings with staff.

There are deliveries and staff accessing the car

park at different times during the day and the

access is very narrow.

The only exceptions to this is when either you or your passenger has

a disability or if you are picking up a sick or injured student.
