• Founded in 1948• EPMC Firm all disciplines in house• 1000+/- employees in 23 offices worldwide• Global experience includes projects in 32 countries and 48 states• Established BIM Research and Development in 2001• Dual Platform Company – Triforma and Revit
About Me
• Bachelor of Science in Architecture from University at Buffalo SUNY• Work for SSOE for 5 years, trained in Triforma Architecture and Revit.• BIM/CAD Technical Specialist for 4 years• Revit Architecture, Revit MEP, & Revit Structure• All in-house training for Revit Architecture, PM Training, Interiors Training

Up Front Documentation• Kick off Agenda
• Typically do not have architects in initial meetings• Developed a questionnaire for PM’s to help with initial coordination
• BIM Execution Plan• Developed and passed to each company working on the project• Level of Detail, Standards, Sharing, who owns what etc.
• BIM/CAD Plan• Developed as an in-house plan to set people involved, project
overview, workflow, file locations, software versions, etc.• Start up Screen
• This is a screen inside the Revit file to help a new user on a project understand what is in the file and who the leads are.

Meetings• Set up Weekly or Bi-Weekly meetings to maximize
coordination• Establish a Revit Coordinator that remains consistent
throughout the life of the project• Meetings in-house and all encompassing• Clash Detections for major pieces on screen• Use of Live Meeting, WebEx or Go-to-Meeting for
long distance coordination• Make sure standards and sheets match across offices• Review the process (Execution Plan) at the beginning
of each phase and update

Project Setup• Create a Revit site file using an import from Civil 3D
• Link file, do not import. This must be 3D in all views origin-to-origin, and to a plan oriented to True North
• Place link on a “CAD Imports” workset and pin
• Shared Coordinates• Choose a file to use as keeper of the Shared Coordinates - Site files
can be most beneficial for multiple buildings, structural files are a second preference, but the Architectural model is often the default
• Use site file to publish the coordinate system to all linked files• A single building can be referenced multiple times and can report
multiple coordinates

Project Setup• Worksets
• Create a workset for each linked model (set default visibility)• Create a “CAD Imports” workset to link CAD files to• Additional worksets may be necessary to separate your workflow, but the less
the better• When the Central File is created, force user to “Specify” worksets when
opening a file. This allows the user to load only the links he/she needs

Project Setup• Default Views
• Setup Coordination Views for visibility of other disciplines• Set the worksets and linked models that you want to see in
these views (view templates work well)• Create “Exporting Views” for other CAD platforms and
Navisworks• Anticipate the items that consultants will need and put them
in your views
• Copy/Monitor• Copy/Monitor levels and grids only (recommended)• There are issues with columns, walls and floors
• Coordination Review• When issues arise, make sure you have one model coordinator
for each discipline that will coordinate the adjustments• Know the different functions between postpone, reject, accept
difference, and modify

Issues to Look Out For• Space and Room Names (update spaces before submittals)• Use Transfer Project Standards to make sure line weights, patterns,
annotations, etc are the same.• Designate 1 person to do updates of consultant files each week• Make sure items are on correct worksets (manage them wisely)• Changing room sizes for other disciplines, deleting elements.• Communicate on large shared items moves (levels, grids, etc)• Copy Monitor (Discuss additions or changes to monitored
categories)• Do not ignore coordination reviews, make sure to review and decide
on each one

Tips and Tricks
• Make sure non modeling engineers, architects, and PM’s understand how Revit works
• LINK AutoCAD files “Current View Only” and place on a proper workset
• Review Warnings regularly to avoid issues with other team members
• Try to review the content that gets loaded into a project
• Use Revit clash detection for daily small checks and Navisworks for large
• Use a monument locator for linked models multiple buildings (a family such as a circle with an X to mark locations of multiple buildings)
• Utilize Coordination Views and Worksets to manage models
• Try to keep individual models under the 160 MB threshold to be able to work efficiently
