Multiple Sclerosis and Stem Cells Therapy

Multiple sclerosis is generally referred to as an autoimmune disease or disorder in which the nerve cells of brain and spinal cord are attacked by patients own immune system.

The nerve cells are covered by protective, insulating sheath called myelin. This myelin sheet is responsible for carrying the signal effectively to and from the brain.

In case of Multiple Sclerosis, the body's immune system perceives myelin sheet as an intruder and attack it resulting in damage due to which this sheet no longer carry the messages properly causing the message transmission process to be slowed, distorted or stopped altogether.

Multiple Sclerosis and Stem Cells TherapyBased on the extent of severity i.e. from mild to severe, there are basically four types of multiple sclerosis namely:• Relapsing-Remitting (RR) MS - It is the most common type of MS

characterized by unexpected appearance and disappearance of the symptoms. Out of all the cases of MS, almost 80% people are suffering from Relapsing-Remitting MS.

• Primary-Progressive (PP) MS - It is characterized by steady worsening of neurologic functioning. This type of MS affects both men and women in equal manner.

• Secondary-Progressive (SP) MS – This type is a next level of Relapsing- remitting MS. After a certain period secondary progressive multiple sclerosis begin to progress steadily.

• Progressive-Relapsing (PR) MS - It is a combination of Primary progressive and relapsing- remitting MS and progress steadily. It is the least common type and found in almost 5% of people out of all the sufferers of multiple sclerosis.

Multiple Sclerosis and Stem Cells TherapyMultiple Sclerosis symptoms vary from one person to another depending on the severity of the disease. The common symptoms of Multiple sclerosis include:• Vision Problems• Tingling and Numbness• Pain and Spasms• Muscle stiffness or spasms (spasticity) • Fatigue and Weakness• Balance Problems and Dizziness• Hearing loss• Seizures• Breathing problems• Slurred speech• Trouble swallowing• Bladder, Bowel, and Sexual Dysfunction• Cognitive Problems• Misbalanced emotional Health

Multiple Sclerosis and Stem Cells Therapy

The diagnosis of Multiple sclerosis is a difficult process and involves various tests and scans for the confirmation of the disease.

Generally, a physician will do a complete review of family history and neurological exam, along with blood test to evaluate physical well being.

One of the main ways to diagnose multiple sclerosis is an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan in which characteristic areas of demyelination will show up as lesions and confirms the onset of the diseases.

Multiple Sclerosis and Stem Cells Therapy

At present there is no cure available for multiple sclerosis, however, using certain drugs such as interferon’s, exercise and physiotherapy it is possible to manage the attacks and symptoms.

Researchers hope that stem cell therapies may provide new approaches that can both prevent damage and enable us to repair it.

Multiple Sclerosis and Stem Cells Therapy

• In general, Multiple sclerosis is estimated to affect 2.3 million people worldwide. Most people are diagnosed between the age of 20 to 50, and can suffer from symptoms such as fatigue, blurred vision, numbness, pain, speech problems and loss of movement.

• It is the most common disease causing disability in young adults, and currently there is no cure available. So, with the advancements in medical science, stem cells rise as a hope for the treatment.

• Due to this, it is very important to understand how stem cell helps in the treatment of multiple sclerosis.

Stems cells therapy for Multiple sclerosis

Today, due to advances in medical science and research, stem cells therapies are giving new hope to people affected by Multiple Sclerosis.

These procedures may help patients who don’t respond to typical drug treatment, want to reduce their reliance on medication or are looking to try stem cell therapy before starting drug treatment.

Multiple Sclerosis and Stem Cells TherapyStem cells are the basic cells of the body and are able to differentiate into any kind of cells present inside the body and renew themselves over a certain period of time.

They in general works on the 3”R” Principle i.e. Replace, Repair and Regenerate the dead and damaged cells and tissues.

After being very much useful in experiments and researches for Multiple sclerosis disease, stem cells are yet waiting for the approval to be used in the treatment procedure. However, various other approaches and types of stem cells are being identified and examined for future treatments. Next slide contains the main focus areas on which researchers are working for finding the treatment:

Multiple Sclerosis and Stem Cells TherapyPreventing damage: Stem cells can be used to prevent the immune system from attacking the nerve cells by immunomodulation.

Repairing damage: Stem cells used to repair the damaged myelin sheath by “remyelination” of the nerves and allowing them to function correctly again. This could prevent the nerves themselves from degenerating.

Developing new medicines: Nerve cells can be grown in the lab condition and used to study the disease condition and test new potential drugs.
