AS WE sit on Grace Lamers’ verandah, her 94-year-old cockatoo, Dixie, sneaks up to sip foam off Grace’s cappuccino. Four large dogs mill around the table and a white peacock preens itself on the spa a few metres away. In a nearby paddock, Grace’s 16-year-old Friesian stallion Age B (pronounced “Arg-ah Be”) grazes, his jet-black coat gleaming in the sun.

“I can’t imagine my life without animals,” says Grace, offering Dixie more cappuccino foam.

Netherlands in 2001. Soon after arriving, they found their property just outside of Yea and have been there ever since. A year after moving here, they imported three Friesian mares from the Netherlands: this was the beginning of Wildcroft Friesian Stud.

“There were only 60 Friesians in Australia when we got here,” says Grace. “Now there are about 600.”

Oddly enough, Grace says Friesians thrive in Australia and tend to live much longer than they do in their home country, generally reaching around 30-35 years old over here. This, she believes, is partly due to the fact that they get to “have more of a life as a horse”in Australia. In the Netherlands, they are stabled most of the time due

to the colder climate, scarcity of space, and a concern among breeders that their valuable animals might be injured while outside.

Interestingly, she also attributes the longevity of her Friesians to not needing to be shod for the most part; without shoes, the soft part in the centre of the hoof, the “frog”, is massaged when the horse moves, which improves blood and lymph circulation.

The Friesian is the only purebred horse native to the Netherlands. The breed has been traced back to the 13th century, and during the 15th century Friesians were in great demand as war horses. It is an undeniably attractive breed, with a thick, arching neck; long, often naturally wavy mane and

tail; feathered fetlocks; big hooves; and sleek, black coat. They are big horses - around 16-17 hands for the stallions – and solidly built, with powerful shoulders suited to the dressage carriage work they’re frequently used for in the Netherlands.

What stands out most about the breed, though, is their friendliness and their ability to bond with humans.

“You won’t find a more affectionate breed than the Friesians,” says Grace. “It’s a very sensitive breed and very willing to work with you if you treat it right.”

And she’s right. Walk into a paddock of mares and foals at Wildcroft and you will instantly be greeted, sniffed, nuzzled and followed – the foals are especially curious.

They are more than happy to be given a pat or scratch and seem genuinely pleased to be in the company of people, even strangers.

The stallions are no different and, as imposing as they are when they get up close, they are calm and exceptionally gentle.

When Grace enters Age B’s paddock, he walks straight to her, welcoming her like an old friend and seeking physical contact – they clearly have a strong bond. In 2004, she went to the Netherlands to choose a stallion to bring back to Wildcroft. There were five picked out for her to choose from; Age B was the second she saw and she knew immediately that he was the one.

“I chose him because I fell in love with him,” says Grace. “I just had this feeling of ‘wow’ … I don’t care how he trots, I don’t care how he walks – I want this horse.”

Grace tells a story that illustrates Age B’s sensitive and warm nature:

“I take horses to Equitana every year and Age is there for two days. There are a few hundred people a day passing and he’s always friendly to people. He was in his stable asleep and I was standing next to him talking to people.

This girl comes up, about nine years old…. She stood [a few feet from Age’s door] and he stretched his neck really long, then she took two steps forward and she put her hands on his nose. They stood there for ten minutes.

This lady stands next to me and she starts to cry. And I

looked at her and said, ‘Oh no, don’t worry, he won’t hurt her.’

Then she said, ‘You have no idea what’s happening here, my daughter has severe Autism, she doesn’t make contact and this is the first time she’s made contact with an animal’.”

Age B’s genes have helped Grace and Teo develop an especially calm and affable herd (not to mention a strikingly beautiful one). Age’s contribution to the Friesian gene pool has also improved the quality of the breed in Australia, bringing it up to the standards of the main studbook in the Netherlands, the Royal Studbook of the KFPS.

“It’s quite rare for a stallion to do that,” says Grace. “You don’t always know if a stallion will pass on his good traits to his offspring.”

experts come to Australia to inspect horses and decide if they meet the requirements for registration in the KFPS Studbook – this event is called a “Keuring”. Last year, 13 of Age’s offspring were presented at the Keuring, and all 13 were awarded “premies”, which are only given to the highest quality horses.

Grace and Teo also work hard to ensure their horses are well-socialised, keeping them in groups until they’re about two years old. Grace says horses that are properly socialised “are more trainable, more developed in the brain. They know the hierarchy a lot better. They have much more respect for the owner and the rider.”

The Friesian’s easy-going temperament and affinity

for humans, along with its graceful movement and naturally high knee action, make it a great horse for a wide range of purposes; Grace says people buy Wildcroft horses for trail riding, breeding, dressage, showing, carriage and, above all, for life-long friendship.

Grace and Teo welcome those who are curious about Friesians to Wildcroft Stud – they are as friendly and hospitable as their magnificent horses. A visit is definitely recommended; the only way to really get a feel for this exceptional breed is to walk into a paddock full of them and have them treat you more like one of their own than a strange, hairless outsider.

WHEN KAREN Williamson, a sheep and cattle farmer from Molesworth, saw fellow farmers grappling with the Goulburn River flooding proposal – which could see swathes of their best land covered with water – she decided her community needed an injection of hope.

In response to the mounting uncertainty and despair, she developed a plan to connect local farmers directly with buyers through raw produce markets in town halls and to boost morale with community gatherings.

“The system’s not working for us so we’re making a new system,” says Karen. “You only need one person standing at a town hall to get something going.”

The raw produce markets will be piloted at Molesworth Town Hall: the Molesworth Fleece & Fibre Market. The idea is for any primary producer, no matter what scale they produce on or what they produce, to be able to showcase their goods once a month.

Pot plants or peacock feathers from pensioners’ backyards, fleeces fresh off the backs of nearby sheep, red gum slabs or hay bales harvested from neighbourhood properties – any raw, local produce will be welcome, and each community market will be a unique reflection of what’s on offer in the area.

Farmers or any other producers can simply drop their raw produce off at midday and come back at four o’clock. In the meantime, the goods will have either been sold or interested buyers will have the producer’s contact details to get in touch directly.

“This is a catalyst for people to develop business,” says Karen. “There are limited rules because everything has to evolve to what communities need, but the criteria at the moment is a minimum of 90 per cent goes to the seller. If the community hall needs to get ten per cent, for insurance or repairs, then that’s up to that committee to decide. Some halls the farmer will get it all.”

Karen is also creating a web directory, “Fair Go – Find Aussie Farmers Selling Direct”, so buyers can find community markets offering what they’re looking for.

In addition to the raw produce markets, Karen believes social gatherings are essential to build resilience in rural areas where communities are crumbling around the edges.

“At the same time as the market, we’re doing a social gathering each month and that’s really important, too, because we want to get the people who are isolated and depressed and the elderly people, we want to get them in,” says Karen. “It’s about building communities and trying to save this culture that we’ve got.”

In Molesworth, the socialising will take place at the Town Hall and across the road at the Hungry Horse Hotel. Karen has organised for extra spinning wheels and knitting needles to be available at the Molesworth markets, so people who know how to spin, knit or felt can teach those who don’t. It’s all about getting everyone from the area interacting with each other and having fun together.

Karen also hopes the raw produce markets will become a hub for sharing local information. “We want all the local charities to turn up and just put their cards on the table so everybody starts knowing what everybody else is doing,” she says.

At the moment, Karen is taking on this monumental project alone. “It’ll probably be just me standing in front of the Hall for the next few months,” she says with a laugh. She is working on securing much-needed funding, gaining media exposure, and connecting Melbourne buyers with local producers.

So far, the proposal has received wholehearted support from the Molesworth Community Hall

Committee, Senator John Madigan, Cindy McLeish MP, UG FM and Hungry Horse Hotel – a list that Karen is constantly endeavouring to expand.

Karen’s dedication to rebuilding rural communities, and the colossal effort she has put into her project, earned her a finalist placing in the Rural Industries R&D Corp Rural Women’s Awards, which are considered the pre-eminent award for rural women. While she missed out on winning, Karen found the experience encouraging and says “it would be great to see more rural women have a go at it”.

Despite the incredible amount she has achieved on her own to date, Karen hopes others will be just as excited about the project and will jump in to help it grow.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to be involved at a grassroots level,” she says. “It’s got a lot of room for people to incorporate their own ideas and personality into it.”

IF YOU’VE ever visited Marysville’s Steavenson Falls, you may have noticed a little sign that states the water here is used for the town’s drinking supply.But this isn’t just any drinking water; it is in fact the second best drinking water in the world.The water, which cascades 84m down the Steavenson Falls and along the Steavenson River, then makes its way to a new $5 million treatment plant where it’s processed before being piped to more than 600 Marysville and Buxton properties.

The plant, which was rebuilt

after the previous one was destroyed in the 2009 fires, has been in operation for a year and Goulburn Valley Water operations manager Steven Nash decided to celebrate by entering the water in a Victorian, then national and finally a global water competition.

Marysville’s water took out the best in state, then the best in the country before five litres were sent to West Virginia, USA earlier this year to vie for title of best municipal water in the world at the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting.

After judges carefully tasted and compared entrants from

across the globe, Marysville’s water was declared the second best; first prize went to a Canadian entrant.

So what makes Marysville’s water so good? According to Mr Nash the quality of the ”raw water” is an important factor, combined with the new facilities.

“The plant is a microfiltration plant with a small amount of chemicals used to polish the water and ensure a consistent standard of water,” a GVW spokeswoman said.

At the international competition, water samples were judged on five key criteria: appearance – should be clear, aroma – there

should be none, taste – should be clean, mouth feel – should be light, and finally aftertaste – it should leave you thirsty for more.

This year was the first time tap water from Australia entered the competition, however, GVW says it won’t be the last with plans to enter again next year.

To celebrate the win a drinking fountain will be installed in Marysville.

So next time you visit one of Marysville’s or Buxton’s cafes or restaurants choose the tap water over bottled, it is after all the second best in the world.

EASTER EACH year sees the running of the Broadford Bike Bonanza at the State Motorcycle Complex. Apart from motocross, dirt track and trials facilities the venue boasts a road racing track. On this weekend ordinary folk can ride their eligible (25 years or older) bikes on their chosen track for 15 minute blocks. In the case of the road circuit this does not mean racing.

All manner of classic bikes can be out there at any one time, from Vespas to Vincents and Hondas to Harleys. In addition, each year a special theme or class of bike is featured, and this time, thanks to the efforts of Yea resident Teo Lamers, it was the Moto Guzzi’s turn.

In the year of Guzzi’s 95th anniversary, and using his extensive European connections, Teo persuaded Giuseppe “Pino” Todero, Alfio Micheli and Antonio Frigerio to travel from Italy to Broadford for the weekend.

Pino brought with him his fabled 1957 Otto Cilindri 500 V8 and a Bialbero 350. Antonio had a 1951 Bicilindrica 500 and a 1939 Compressore supercharged

250, and Alfio a Condor 500 and a 1953 Monoalbero 350.

The V8 Moto Guzzi is one of the rarest and most unusual motorcycles in the world. Only four were made, plus some spare engines and parts. One is in the Moto Guzzi museum in Italy, Antonio and Pino own one each, and the fourth is in private hands and presently dismantled.

“The owner of the fourth V8 died recently. He was a good friend. He dismantled the bike but he never got it back together,” says Antonio

“He just liked looking at the parts. He would pick up a part, and turn it over, and look at it and then put it back again. The parts are beautiful”.

Indeed in some ways the Otto Cilindri is more chronometer than internal combustion engine. Imagine a Ford or Holden V8 engine scaled down to 1/10th size, and weighing around 70kg including transmission. Overhead camshafts and water cooling. Eight carburettors, eight ignition coils,

eight sets of points, eight individual straight through exhaust pipes. Extensive use of magnesium and aluminium alloys and a redline of 12,500rpm. No computers, just pencil, paper and genius.

“My father was an engineer at Moto Guzzi from 1937 until his death in 2005, and worked closely with designer Giulio Carcano on the development of the V8. The whole project went from drawings to finished bike in six months.”

“Guzzi was his life. He was the only one with a full set of keys to the factory because he was always the first at work and the last to leave.”

“A delegation from the plant came to visit him in hospital just before his death. They had a problem in production and needed help. My father solved their problem and told them: if you need to know anything else come and see me in the cemetery.”

“Many riders claimed the V8 was unmanageable. It was a very powerful machine for its day. But I don’t think

they were necessarily quite right. Two Englishmen, Bill Lomas and Dickie Dale, and Australian riders Keith Campbell and Ken Kavanagh had success with it.”

“Lomas set a speed record of 243km/h in 1957. Also in ‘57 Dale had a wonderful victory at Imola, and after leading for most of the Isle of Man TT had to stop for a while and ended up with fourth place.”

“At the end of 1957 Moto Guzzi quit racing, and to my father that was like being stabbed in the heart.”

“Over the years, with company restructures and changes of ownership, much Guzzi history was lost. All they could see was dusty bits and pieces cluttering their warehouse. They could not see the beauty.”

I ask Pino, an engineer by profession, if he still rides.

“No, but in my younger days I had a Condor 500. My

friends and I used to race on the street for beers.” He smiles. “My bike had a racing cylinder head so mostly I won.”

“I worked at Guzzi for a week, but then they finished racing so I left.”

“I once built my own motorcycle at home, after work. My father would look over my shoulder and say: You are doing this wrong, that is not right. When I finished the bike I kicked it over twice and it started. He was as proud as I was,” says Pino.

Due to technical issues it was decided not to put the V8 on the track, but Pino was determined to get it going.

“The sound,” he says and brushes his arm, “it gives you goosebumps.”

All day Saturday, with the help of Teo and Antonio, he tried to get the beast running, but it stubbornly refused to play. The best they got was six cylinders firing.

When I thanked Pino for his efforts he said simply – “While I am here I will not stop trying”.

Finally at around noon on Sunday, over the noise of dozens of motorcycles on the track and in the pits, the Otto Cilindri burst into full song with a spine chilling howl. When Pino shut it down 30 seconds later the hundreds of onlookers cheered and applauded, but the biggest grin belonged to Pino Todero.

An elderly gentleman next to me says quietly, “I saw that bike race in 1957 when I was a kid. I just wanted to hear it one more time”.

Midday Sunday the visiting Guzzis are out on the track again, including the 1939 Compressore 250 ridden by Cam Donald.

Cam is a Melbourne based rider with an international reputation. Apart from his work as the senior road tester at Motorcycle Trader magazine he competes

regularly at Phillip Island, the Isle of Man and circuits across the Tasman, on both superbikes and classic bikes.

When Angelo Balzarotti, the regular pilot of Pino’s bikes fell ill on the trip to Australia Cam, with his experience at riding rare and often fragile machines, was a natural choice to replace him.

“Motorcycles are not only my job they are my life, I live and breathe anything with two wheels and an engine. I am privileged to race and test the latest and greatest examples, but it’s bikes from our past that truly fascinate me. In recent years I have started studying many of the iconic bikes that have inspired our current day models.“

“Since I was a lad I had heard stories of the incredible 500cc V8 and 250cc Supercharged Moto Guzzis, machines that were designed and built ahead of their time.

“To finally see them in person

was something special, to get an opportunity to ride them was almost beyond belief.

“These bikes aren’t adorned with shiny chrome or glossy paint, they were built with one thing in mind, to win races. And that they did, engineered with the precision of a Swiss watch they are mechanical art.

“Riding many of the models that made the trip to Broadford gave me a taste of

how tough the racing was in those early years.

“These bikes are not easy to ride. The highly tuned engines only make power in a very narrow band of their rev range. Engine power far exceeded the chassis and tyre technology of the time, and the race tracks were often closed public roads and extremely dangerous.

“I was thrilled to ride these bikes around the smooth Broadford circuit on a sunny


day but can’t imagine how brave their riders must have been to race them on the bumpy tracks of the 1950’s.”

Alfio Micheli has been riding his beloved 1938 Condor 500 on the track.

Alfio had a successful career racing Guzzis and other makes in the 70s and 80s, and competed against the legendary Giacomo Agostini. He started as a test rider for the Moto Guzzi factory in 1974, continuing there until 2009. With his friend Antonio interpreting I ask him a few questions. A quiet, reserved man he becomes animated when motorcycles are mentioned.

What’s his favourite motorcycle of all time?

“All of them,” he says without hesitation.

Does he still ride much?

“Only to get the milk and bread,” he says, “and on the track. The highways are too dangerous!”

He takes me out to the parking lot and points to various Guzzis from the 70s on – all models he was involved in the testing of.

I thank him for his time.

“Wait,” he says, “I have a little story for you.”

“We were testing the SP motor for noise emissions before production. Pino’s father, Umberto, was in charge. I had to ride past the testing equipment – up and back, up and back. I got very bored so I decided to do a big mono.”

His hands on imaginary handlebars fly over his head and he has the throttle pinned.

“Well,” he laughs, “ Umberto called me over straight away. He pointed at the front wheel and said sternly: No fooling. That stays on the ground. Always!”

“We had a good understanding. Mostly I did as I was told, and sometimes he let me get away with a little bit. He was like a father to me.”

The combined value of the visiting Guzzis is millions of dollars. The Otto Cilindri alone is valued at $3.5 million. The generosity and passion shown by the visitors in sharing their treasures was simply stunning.

Where else could you get so close to, and even touch, priceless works of art without a barrier or security guard in sight?

That’s Broadford.

JASON KIRLEY is the embodiment of grit and determination. After driving the 700 odd kilometres from Alexandra to Sydney to compete in this year’s Woodchopping World Championships at the Royal Easter Show, he was told by the head handicapper that he wasn’t good enough to enter: his handicap was too low.

Rather than give up, Jason resolved to increase his handicap by entering as many contests as he could in the eight days leading up to the championships.

“I did two events every day and cut six to eight logs every day,” says Jason of the marathon effort in those eight days. It paid off, and Jason’s handicap was increased sufficiently to qualify for the world championships.

Despite the accumulated fatigue from so many all-out efforts in such a short period, Jason still put on an impressive show at the championships; he finished 8th in the Manny McCarthy Memorial 375mm Underhand.

and cuts the log between their feet with a downward motion, is Jason’s specialty.

Jason’s placing in the Worlds was a bonus for his sponsor, the Alexandra Truck Ute & Rod Show.

“We were very proud of Jason and everything he has accomplished. We helped Jason when he competed in Adelaide ten years ago. It’s great to see his progression,” says Truck Show representative, Gordon Simpson.

“We like to sponsor local people in their endeavours. We helped Jason because he represents everything that

the Alexandra Truck Show wood chop is about.”

In April, Jason finished second in the in the VicForests Wood Chop Underhand Championship at the AUSTimber Expo in Traralgon and his achievements across various competitions this season have him lined up to win a Central Victorian Axemen’s Association (CVAA) aggregate trophy.

For Jason, woodchopping is in the blood. He comes from a family with a long history of working in the timber industry and is a fourth generation competitive woodchopper.

Jason’s great-grandfather, Bob Radford, was a woodchopping world title holder, and both his grandfather and father have swung their axes in tournaments.

Jason started young and has been involved in the sport for more than fifteen years: “I had my first woodchop when I was about 12 and then sorta off and on ‘til I was about sixteen or seventeen, and then I got serious and made the Australian under 21s team.”

After competing with the under 21s team for several years, Jason had “a bit of a holiday” and got back into the sport a couple of years ago. Now, at 28, Jason is working hard to re-establish himself as an athlete and earn himself a title. He’s dedicated, motivated, and not afraid to put in the hard slog.

“I train nearly every day, like six days a week. I lift weights four nights a week, I do a little bit of boxing, and cut logs every chance I get,” he says. “I try and use work sometimes for training too, lifting heavy stuff.”

The solitary nature of the sport suits him. “I’ve done team sports over time, and there’s always politics, it’s just me standing on the log and it’s up to me, it’s what I can do.” He adds, with a chuckle, “And it’s good to let off some frustration too I s’pose.”

Since Jason’s interest in the sport has been revived, his father, Michael Kirley, has also found renewed passion for it. Jason says, “He’s getting back into it. He’s getting all excited, starting to come round and cut a few. I go around and train at his house all the time, lifting weights. Then he comes round on the weekends, and he does all my axes for me – he sharpens

them and gets them all ready for comp.”

Jason’s next competition will be another VicForests event, this time at the Alexandra Truck Ute & Rod Show, where he will be up against the current world champion and fellow Victorian, Brayden Meyer.

The Truck Ute & Rod Show competition is the last in the season on the CVAA calendar. The end of season excitement – and the inclusion of the much-loved tree-felling event – makes the Truck Show woodchopping tournament a spectator favourite.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Truck Show, a milestone that promises to make its wood chop even more exciting.

“Someone once told us that if the truck show ran for seven years we were doing ok and if it ran for 12 years, we would be very lucky. Today we have one of the best truck shows in country Australia,” says Gordon. “The wood chop and the timber section are an important part of the Alexandra Truck Ute & Rod Show. It showcases our local heritage in the timber industry. Our Shire of Murrindindi history was built on timber and we are proud of it.”

After the Truck Show, Jason will continue his training through the off-season: preparation for next year’s Royal Easter Show will begin right away. Although happy with his results this year, especially under the circumstances, he is determined to do even better next year and has resolved to follow in his great grandfather’s footsteps – he has a world title in his sights. Given the pluck and persistence he’s demonstrated since returning to the sport, Jason is one to watch.

SID KARIMI hasn’t been home in 28 years. When I tell him I’ve travelled to Iran his eyes light up, he presses his hand to his heart and immediately asks me what it was like.

In the late ‘80s as the nation was coming to terms with the end of eight years of war with Iraq, Sid was planning to leave Iran for Australia.

Following the Islamic revolution of 1979, and hoping to take advantage of a country battling internal conflicts, in 1980 Saddam Hussein invaded a region of Iran. This decision led to almost a decade of war and more than 900,000 Iranian and Iraqi deaths.

Unable to sit back and watch as his country went to war, Sid, a skilled helicopter rescue pilot with the Iranian military, spent the next eight years at war.

The city of Esfahan is home to many important Islamic buildings.

The beauty of Iran


Stuck in time: The relatively isolated village of Abyaneh is said to be at least 1500 years old, its inhabitants still speak Middle Persian, a language predating modern Farsi, which largely disappeared centuries ago.

“I’m lucky to be alive,” he says.

Having completed hundreds of missions and helping save countless lives, despite being shot at and targeted by the enemy, the Iranian lives to tell his tale, and it’s a fascinating one at that.

Once the centre of the great Persian Empire, Iran today borders Afghanistan and Pakistan to the east, Turkmenistan to the northeast, both Turkey and Iraq on the west and Azerbaijan and Armenia to the northwest.

Iran is a land of mountains, including Mt Damavand (5671m), the tallest in the Middle East; and deserts, including the Lut Desert, one of the hottest places on Earth. In the north lies the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf to the south.

Spanning thousands of years, Iran’s history is both long and grand and undeniably

peppered with power, religion and conflict.

When I told my family and friends I was going to Iran they asked me if I was serious. When they realised I was, most asked me why and some even asked me not to go.

When I think of Iran I am gripped by two things, its physical beauty; with its rugged desert vistas and snow capped mountains, and in the overwhelming grandeur of the country’s intricately decorated mosques. But the second thing that struck me was the people.

If you’re alone in Iran you won’t be for very long. Iran isn’t your typical tourist destination, annual figures show an estimated 5 million international tourists visit each year, a number Iran is hoping to see increase to 20 million over the next 10 years. But that’s where

the beauty lies; people are intrigued, they’re interested and genuinely want to interact with you. Whenever I stopped for a moment to rest my tired feet in a park, to sip on a sugary tea or walk slowly enough to catch the eye of an onlooker, I was stopped.

“Where are you from?”

“Why did you come to Iran?

“What do you think of my country?”

I was asked these questions time and time again and before long I’d look at my watch, see half an hour had gone by and I’d have to ask my new acquaintance to forgive me as I moved on.

Iranian customs dictate when somebody offers you something you should say no three times, if they offer a fourth time you know they are genuine and you should accept. I applied this rule and found I rarely left one of these encounters empty

handed as a palm full of dates or sweets were pushed into my hand as a parting gift.

Today Iran is a changing place. While it’s still governed under Islamic law, things are slowly shifting as international sanctions are lifted and some laws are relaxed.

For Sid, who has owned Shell Buxton since 2005, and has lived in Australia for more than two decades, Australia is now home, but there is a part of him that will always be connected to Iran and after spending time there it is easy to see why.

Sid says one day he might visit Iran again, but not just yet.

LAKE EILDON should be bottoming out at around the 30 per cent mark and the cooler weather has seen surface temperatures drop as well. The big news for Lake Eildon: there is no longer a cod season on the lake. However, size and bag limits still remain and the bag limit for golden perch has been reduced from 10 to 5 per day.

The lake has still been fishing quite well for Murray cod, golden perch, rainbow and brown trout. There have even been a few good reports of some nice red fin being picked up recently.

The large bibbed lures that dive to 25 feet have been the best choice for cod and yellowbelly, with a wide range of colours working, from light yellows, greens and pinks to dark purples, blacks and oranges.

Bait wise, just mix it up – scrubbies and yabbies are still the preferred method, but I still get reports of cod being caught on sliced ham, bacon, cheese, and chicken fillets. I’ve also had a report of a yellowbelly being caught on a chicken shaslick. So like I said mix it up, you never know.

The trout are back up near the surface, with flat line trolling Tassie Devils, King Cobras and Stingers doing well. Pinks and purples are still number one and two, closely followed by the frog, clown and Canberra killer.

Woolshed inlet has had a few nice sized redfin taken, and more recently smaller redfin near Taylor Bay, but they are still proving to be elusive.

Eildon Pondage was restocked just before Easter with 280 ex brood stock brown and rainbow trout between 1kg and 3kg. The old favorites such as dough, Power Bait, gold Krocs and pink Tassies have all worked well. More recently the salmon egg in the Power Bait, the brown trout 2 in the Kroc, and spider mud eye under float are the best options.

Bourke Street, Riverside Drive, the floating jetty, and the football oval are still prime areas. The back of the Eildon Caravan Park has also had some success with Power Bait and Krocs as well.

The rivers above Lake Eildon have been a little slow for trout with lack of rain and warm water temperatures. A few small browns and rainbows have been caught on scrubbies and the small bladed lures. Once we get a good flush with the rains to come things should fire up. However up towards Jamieson, in the lower reaches of the Goulburn, several good sized Murray cod and yellowbelly have been caught.

Below the Pondage, down the Goulburn River, anglers have been doing well with soft plastics, small hard-bodied minnow and bladed type lures as well as scrub worms.

Gilmours Bridge, McMartins Lane and the mouth of Snobs Creek are all worth a shot.

Rapalas and small galaxia pattern type lures are picking up the occasional nice sized trout in the Steavenson and Rubicon rivers, with quite a few smaller trout also being caught as well.

AUSTRALIA HAS many nocturnal (night hunting) animals and birds. Among the birds are a group known as owls, whose silent flight, wonderful eyesight and hearing enable them to hunt prey in the darkest of conditions.

The powerful owl (Ninox strenua) is the largest owl in Australia and is currently listed as endangered in Victoria.

Description

The name powerful owl is apt: it’s a very imposing bird, measuring up to 650cm in length. (I remember the first time I met one in the bush; my birding friend and I were quite overwhelmed by its size and beauty.)

The most striking features of the powerful owl are the large golden eyes and its sheer size. It is brownish on the back, with whitish mottling and barring. The front is whitish and covered by grey-brown V-barring. The tail grey-brown with several whitish bars and the legs are feathered.

The powerful owl has an atypical silhouette for an owl, with a relatively small head and long tail. It has a protruding beak and distinct brow ridges. Its overall appearance can be described as somewhat hawk-like.

DistributionandHabitat

The powerful owl is found in the Murrindindi area, but it isn’t common. It has a range from near Rockhampton in Queensland to the Western district in Victoria. Its range extends in a broad band down the coast where suitable bushland occurs.

Powerful owls can be found in open forests and woodlands. They tend to prefer areas that are more heavily timbered and can often be found near water.

Each bird requires a large territory and when it has exhausted the possums (which it feeds on) in an area, it will move on to a new territory. Many sightings of powerful owls have been reported in metropolitan

Melbourne due to the large possum population. FeedingThe powerful owl is a carnivore. It is capable of catching gliders and possums, which form a large part of its diet along with many smaller birds and animals. It hunts mainly from trees, swooping down to grab prey with its feet.

It will often eat the head end first and hang on to the remainder in its claws as it sits on its daytime perch,

then eat the remainder the next night.BreedingThe powerful owl mates for life, which can be over 30 years. They nest at least 15 metres off the ground in vertical hollows in trees. The male prepares the nest, while the female incubates and broods the young. Both parents feed the young.Call The powerful owl has a slow, resonant double hoot that can travel for over a

kilometre in the bush.

The owls are being monitored by DELWP in the Kinglake area post the Black Saturday fires. There has been a recording of powerful owls in the area (remember never to upset owl researchers by giving away specific owl locations!). Given the increasing numbers of possums and gliders being found in recent surveys in the area, it is hopeful that owl numbers will return to pre Black Saturday numbers in the not too distant future.

ONE OF the most intriguing of all bush food plants is the quandong or native peach (Santalum acuminatum), an unassuming large shrub or small tree. It is found throughout the drier areas of southern Australia and was used extensively as a food plant by the Aboriginal people wherever the plant occurred.

The quandong is related to the legendary sandalwood tree (Santalum spicatum) which is used to produce an essential oil that is highly prized in the cosmetics industry. In Western Australia the harvesting of wild sandalwood during the 19th Century rivalled the gold rush as a source of new found wealth. And the quandong provided the early settlers with a potent source of vitamins and nutrients.

From a horticultural perspective, the quandong is a fascinating plant, in that it is parasitic in nature. The roots of the tree attach themselves to a wide variety of host plants that provide a source of nutrition to the quandong. If you are going to grow a

tree then some suitable host species should be planted within a metre such as wattles, creeping boobialla (Myoporum parvifolium) and the various species of saltbush are just some of the options.

Quandongs can be grown from seed, but it is hard to germinate. The best way to do it is to crack open the woody fruit and plant the kernel in some general purpose potting mix and simply wait for it to sprout.

This may take months but it will eventually happen.

Plants are often available via the internet through mail order as an alternative if you do not want to wait for the plant from seed.

Another intriguing feature of the quandong is the dry knobbly-textured structure that is revealed after the edible red flesh is removed from the outside, leaving an ornamental woody ‘ball’ that has long been used throughout the outback for games such as marbles and Chinese checkers.

The quandong provides two sources of food, the first and most easily available is the red flesh on the outside of the fruit that is readily peeled off. Whilst it is rather tart, the flesh has a distinctive and delicious flavour and

goes well in jams and other preserves.

As well as being widely used in dessert dishes, the flesh can also be used in savoury recipes and is a great source of vitamin C. As well as the shiny, bright red flesh on the outside of the fruit, the Aborigines also cracked the fruit open to harvest the edible seeds inside them and a current day market has also developed for the kernels particularly as a dried or roasted product.

This is a uniquely Australian tree that has been used by Australians for thousands of years and as well as being a source of nutrition, the tree is well worth growing as an ornamental plant both for its fruits and foliage. The Eildon CFA is running a ‘Challenge the Fire Truck’ event on Sunday 9 October to raise money for a new 4WD vehicle. A 4WD will allow the CFA to get to incidents quickly, assess the situation, then call for back-up if required; it will help make fire fighting more efficient.

Participants will have the following options: a combined 25km bike ride and 10km run; 25km bike ride only; 10km run only; or a 5km walk around the Eildon Pondage.

The fire truck will do the loop from Eildon to Thornton and across the dam wall, travelling between 60-70km per hour – this will give entrants a chance to beat it home. When the truck reaches the finish line, it will set up hoses to create a water arc. If you ride, run or walk under the water, you’ll know the truck beat you!

There will be prizes on offer for the winners of each leg, including:• 1 night accommodation at

LAST YEAR, The Eildon Explorer – Car 169 – successfully completed the Variety Bash to Cooktown and raised more than $20,000 for the children’s charity, Variety.

Variety is a worldwide charity, which has delivered over $180 million net to sick, disadvantaged, and special needs Australian children. Variety’s largest fundraising event is the Variety Bash, which was started by entrepreneur and philanthropist Dick Smith in 1985. The Bash involves outrageously-themed cars adventuring through the Outback and has become an iconic Australian motoring event.

This year brings a new team

member, as well as a new name, for Car 169. Team captain, John Ricardo, and teammate, Gary Demby, will be joined this year by Mike Tankard. They have decided to change the car’s name to Dindi Dandies to reflect a broader representation of Murrindindi Shire businesses and highlight what the area has to offer as a tourist destination.

All teams participating in the 2016 Variety Bash will be travelling to Darwin, visiting towns and staying overnight at Mildura, Wilpena Pound, Eridunda, King’s Canyon, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and Katherine. What a journey!

THE ALEXANDRA Timber Tramway is gearing up for another Heritage Machinery Festival on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September. The Alexandra Spring Market will run at the Timber Tramway on the same weekend.

This year’s event will feature an array of working machinery displays, including stream, oil and conventional engines. Steam train rides behind the John Fowler loco of 1909 will be a feature right across the weekend.

Our resident blacksmith will demonstrate the dying art of sculpting with hot metal. There will also be a barbecue on the train station platform and plenty of activities for the kids.

Bob McNamara opened the doors to Little Fishes Art Studio a year ago, giving local artists a platform to showcase their work and visitors a place to enjoy it.

THERE’S something about art that has always captivated Bob McNamara.

And opening the doors to Little Fishes Art Studio in Marysville last year has made it possible for him to share his passion, while giving local artists a platform to showcase their talent.

Over the past 12 months the studio has played host to a variety of exhibitions including paintings, photography, textiles, woodwork, and even a

display featuring handmade guitars.

Bob describes his studio as “another piece in the puzzle”, generating interest in Marysville and adding to the growing arts culture within the town.

Giving local artists a space to show their work is at the centre of Bob’s philosophy and was a driving factor when he decided to open the studio.

Little Fishes is located right in the heart of Marysville and is a peaceful space flooded

with natural light.

“I wanted to create this lovely space in the middle of town,” Bob said.

“Somewhere to display local art.”

“It’s just great to have a local focus.”

Each month a new exhibition takes over Little Fishes Art Studio, and with plenty of local talent Bob says he has an extensive bank of artists to draw upon in the future.

“People toiling away in their back rooms don’t often get

to show their collections, they might show one or two things, here they can show an entire exhibition,” he said.

“I can showcase people’s art and I get a great deal of pleasure from it, so it’s a double edged thing.”

Bob is also exploring the idea of hosting workshops and art demonstrations, including life-drawing classes, to coincide with upcoming exhibitions.

When Bob speaks about his studio he sees it as a part of a much larger picture, a


picture that paints Marysville as an arts hub and he hopes his studio will eventually be part of a walking art tour in the town as the number of galleries and art displays increase.

“It would be great to get an art trail happening,” he said.

There is no doubt Bob’s love of art runs deep, and he has begun exploring his own creative side.

“I think I am an artist, I just haven’t given myself permission to do it,” he said.

“I’ve always been drawn to art.”

“At school I never really had the opportunity to pursue it.”

There is probably only one thing that eclipses Bob’s love of art, and that’s his love of Marysville and its community.

Bob first moved to Marysville in 1986, “totally by accident”, he says.

“We drove in on a hot February day, parked under the big trees in the main street and my wife said,

‘I want to live here’, so we came back every weekend until we found somewhere,” he said.

Perhaps Bob’s connection with art comes from his father, an unlikely painter who kept his talent mostly to himself, or perhaps Bob’s own inner creativity, though like his father is kept mostly to himself, is the reason behind his love of art.

But no matter what it is, his passion is undeniable.

“I’m having the most fun I’ve

ever had working,” he said.

“It’s such a feel good business.”

“And I get to show off Marysville.”

WHILE renovating her bathroom, Sarah Simpson realised just how restless her fingers had become. She was taking a break from her trade as a chef at the time, and the home improvement project sparked the desire to put her hands to work again. She thought to herself: “If I could make anything, I’d make jewellery.”

That was nearly six years ago. Soon after the bathroom makeover was complete, Sarah began learning the craft of metalsmithing through private tuition with accomplished jewelers. She quickly grew to love her newfound ability to make unique, lasting works of art.

“I love being able to create something that means something to people … something they treasure, something they can pass down to other people. I really try to make jewellery that people miss when they don’t have it on,” says Sarah.

Sarah focuses on making custom jewellery for just about any purpose imaginable: children’s jewellery, remodeled family heirlooms, one-of-a-kind wedding bands, engagement rings, and bridesmaid sets.

Many of Sarah’s customers are locals from the Murrindindi area, but she was also pleasantly surprised when orders for her children’s jewellery starting coming from the US. Now, the majority

of her children’s jewellery sales are to the US.

Sarah doesn’t shy away from a challenge and is always eager to take on unusual jewellery customisation projects, which can require a bit of problem solving and lateral thinking on Sarah’s behalf – something she really enjoys.

On one occasion, a woman brought her grandmother’s wedding ring to Sarah. The woman wanted to wear the ring, which didn’t fit her, but didn’t want the ring altered. How do you wear a ring that doesn’t fit?

Sarah came up with an ingenious solution.

“The wedding ring … was engraved all the way round so it couldn’t be resized to fit her without cutting the pattern, so I made a ring keeper pendant. It was designed to hold the ring safely when the necklace was worn and when it was taken off the ring could be removed – that was really interesting. It was a great way for her to be able to wear the ring every day.”

Sarah says custom jewellery can be far more affordable than people think, especially if they provide some of the raw materials.

“It can be a lot cheaper than people expect to get something good quality… If, for example, they’ve lost one earring and want the other one made into a pendant, or to have jewellery they don’t wear anymore … melted down and made into something else, is actually pretty cost-effective.”

It can, however, take time for that personalised piece you’ve commissioned to be completed. Sarah says that for a really particular custom design, or if she has to order materials in, then it can take up to six weeks (something worth bearing in mind if you plan to order for a special event).

To make her custom jewellery even more precious, Sarah strives to run an ethical, environmentally friendly business. She sources recycled


Australian gold and sterling silver, and she uses natural (rather than man-made) gemstones and non-conflict diamonds. On a recent trip to Queensland, she was excited to find gems from small local miners, which she brought home and added to her growing stockpile.Sarah is continually honing her craft by learning from various experts. “The next thing I really want to learn is hand engraving, I’ll go to Sydney for that,” she says. It’s easy to see that she is

thrilled at the prospect of refining her metalsmithing skills, and that after nearly six years her passion for it hasn’t waned one iota; her future as a jeweler is as bright and exciting as the treasured metals and gemstones she works with.

It seems natural, in the prelude to Alexandra’s 150th birthday celebrations in 2017, to focus Rustic Simplicity’s exhibitions on the region’s history, starting with the natural environment – as it was – once upon a time.

This group exhibition tells the story of the pre-settlement of Alexandra and surrounds through images of local landscapes, flora and fauna across a wide range of media, and is on show until Monday 13 June.

‘Yuma-kmerriba-ngat’~CelebratingourAboriginalHeritagethroughContemporaryArt

Continuing the theme of gearing up for Alexandra’s 150th Birthday celebrations in 2017, this show honours the district’s First People. ‘Yuma-k merriba-ngat’ is a group exhibition by contemporary artists with Taungurung heritage. Alongside the visual art forms, Taungurung Dreamtime stories will be told in written form,

both in Taungurung and in its English translation.

This exhibition coincides with NAIDOC Week (3-10 July), the theme of which in 2016 is Songlines: The living narrative of our nation:

“For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, the Dreamtime describes a time when the earth, people and animals were created by our ancestral spiritual beings.

They created the rivers, lakes, plants, land formations and living creatures. Dreaming tracks crisscross Australia and trace the journeys of our ancestral spirits as they created the land, animals and lores.

These dreaming tracks are sometimes called ‘Songlines’ as they record the travels of these ancestral spirits who ‘sung’ the land into life.”

‘Yuma-k merriba-ngat’, which in Taungurung literally translates to ‘paint something, or paint up’, is a call to all artists and artisans with Taungurung heritage to get creating (ANY art form, not just painting).

Mokuhanga Mokuhanga is traditional Japanese woodblock printing where water based paints are used to print the image, instead of spirit based inks such as those used in lino printing. These water based inks are environmentally friendly and easier to clean up.

The cutting of the image in the wood is a really lovely part of the process – you need to keep your mind on what you’re doing so you don’t cut the wrong areas, and you can get a lovely rhythm going. Very satisfying.

Pictured is a Mokuhanga print Louise Foletta did in Kyoto last year. There are 4 different wood block plates here.

The young women get dressed in traditional costume and visit the temples, and the old parts of town, and everywhere you see them being photographed or taking photos of themselves.
