I am repeatedly told that these are the awards that museums really want to win. They generate very public recognition for the winners and shortlistees and have been instrumental in helping many to secure funding and support from key stakeholders. Without doubt, the competition is tough but

our awards give all organisations – no matter what size – the chance to enjoy the spotlight.

It is hugely inspiring to see how this sector continues to overcome challenges and financial restraints with determination and enthusiasm and all without compromise to quality, and these awards celebrate that in spades!

We’re really pleased to continue our partnership with the Guardian Culture Professionals Network to crown the UK’s most inspiring museum or heritage visitor attraction of the past 12 months. Full details of how to nominate your favourite for the Culture Pros Pick can be found at museumsandheritage.com/awards.

The winners will be announced at a glittering Awards Ceremony in the historic staterooms of 8 Northumberland, London on Wednesday 29 April. It’s an unmissable evening of glitz, glamour and celebration!

Good luck with your entry and be sure to read the criteria and our ‘Getting it right’ top tips – they’ll give you the competitive edge.

I very much look forward to hearing about what you’ve all been up to in 2014 and to meeting you on the night.

General Rules of Entry

Who Can Enter? The Awards are open to museums, galleries, cultural and heritage visitor attractions. Entries from outside contractors and suppliers are also welcomed but where the entry relates to a specific attraction it must only be submitted with the prior consent of the client concerned and please ensure that you include your client’s name on your entry form. All projects entered into the categories must be carried out in the UK, with the exception of the International Award category which is open to overseas applications.

Where both a museum, gallery or heritage attraction and their supplier/contractor enter the same project into a category, the two entries will be treated as a joint entry for the purposes of judging.

Companies/organisations or individuals may submit entries on behalf of themselves or others and may enter any number of categories, but no single project may be entered into more than three categories. Your two page written entry paper must be tailored to the category entered.

>GETTING IT RIGHT!If you are entering these awards on behalf of your client, permission must have been given to do so. Please also note that all shortlistees must have at least one representative attending the ceremony on 29 April.

EligibilityExcept where indicated, submissions should relate to the period between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2014. The organisers reserve the right to retain entries for subsequent publication in connection with the Awards.

Descriptions of submissions from winners and runners-up will be published in connection with the Awards. Entrants may mark certain sensitive parts of their entry ‘not for publication’ (such as exact budgets figures etc.), provided such restrictions are not used unreasonably.

Deadline For EntriesThe closing deadline for entries is Friday 30 January 2015.

Post: Entries should be sent to Debbie Harris, Museums + Heritage Awards for Excellence, The Coach House, Sharman Road, Worcester, WR1 3LA. Date of posting on Friday 30 January 2015 will also be accepted.

Courier: The Museums + Heritage Show offices will be open until 5.30pm on Friday 30 January 2015 to accept any entries delivered by courier.

JudgingThe judges have been selected to provide a professional and wide-ranging level of expertise. Judges may move entries between categories if deemed to be unsuitable for the category entered. Awards will be made solely at the discretion of the judges, no feedback or correspondence

will be entered into about the results and the judges decisions are final.

Usually a maximum of five entries from each category will be shortlisted and will go through to the final stage of judging. Winners and commendations will then be decided from this shortlist.

All entrants will be notified as to whether they are a finalist in early March.

Collection Of WorkOwing to the expected number of entries, it will not be possible for support material to be returned by post, however it will be possible for material to be collected by prior arrangement from The Museums + Heritage Show on 29 + 30 April 2015 at Olympia, London.

Temporary/Touring Exhibition

Entries for this award should highlight excellence in the creation of a temporary or touring exhibition, designed to be featured within a museum, gallery or heritage attraction. The category is open to the restoration and conservation of single objects through to entire buildings. Particular attention will be given to how the project has enhanced public access whilst ensuring important historical artefacts and buildings have been safe guarded for the future.

This award will recognise excellence in the creation of a successful project or exhibition, achieved on a budget of less than £10,000 ex VAT. Award Categories for 2015plus category specific criteria

>GETTING IT RIGHT!The general rules of entry, which apply to all categories (with the exception of the Best Customer Service award) have been explained in the previous pages. However, the specific category criteria detailed below must also be adhered to within your entry paper.

Best Customer Service sponsored by

This award celebrates and rewards volunteers and staff. It’s not the size of an organisation that determines the customer experience but the attitude and commitment of those who work within it. Nominations for this award can be made for a team or an individual, from the boardroom to the ‘shop floor’. Nominations should detail the extra lengths that the nominee(s) went to enhance their customers’ experience and the positive impact that has had on the department or organisation as a whole. Your paper should clearly illustrate why your nominated person/department is outstanding in this area. It could be as a result of innovative measures taken to understand and improve customer experience or new and special steps taken to ensuring that each and every visitor leaves with a smile and returns again.

Culture Pros Pick Have your say – vote for the sector’s most inspiring museum or heritage visitor attraction of 2014!We’ve teamed up again with the Guardian Culture Professionals Network to launch our search for the UK’s most inspiring museum or heritage visitor attraction of the past 12 months. This is your opportunity to nominate the institution you think is a shining example within the sector for its ground-breaking approach to engaging with audiences and visitors in 2014-15. The winning attraction will gain the recognition of its peers and visiting public alike with a Guardian Culture Professionals Network and promotion across the Guardian website and social media.

Who should win? Nominations will open in late 2014, keep an eye on the website for more information www.museumsandheritage.com/awards. To nominate all you need to do is tell us, in no more than 50 words, why you feel your choice is deserving of this accolade. The five attractions with the most nominations will then be shortlisted and opened to the public vote – so while you are welcome to nominate your own organisation, you will need to encourage your supporters to do so too.

The deadline for nominations is 30 January 2015 and the shortlist of five will be published on the Guardian Culture Professionals Network in February. Voting will close at the end of March and the winner will be announced at the Museums + Heritage Awards on 29 April.
