Early One Morning is a beautiful lyrical folk song that

could be used as a band warmup or a contrasting piece

on a concert program on at a festival. It starts quietly,

off in the distance, then the melody enters in the low

voices and gently builds. The haunting melody flows

throughout the ensemble and comes to a peaceful

close.

Flexible Junior Brass Band Series

This series allows the maximum in flexibility for developing

brass musicians in the British Brass Band tradition. Each

composition or arrangement has 6-7 unique parts with various

percussion. Each part has several different transposition options.

This allows for performance with as few players as 7 or

performance by a full band instrumentation. The range, endurance

and technical demands are all carefully considered when writing

for less experienced players.

Queen Anne's Revenge was the final ship sailed by

Edward Thatch, also known as the pirate, Blackbeard.

To give the "Pirate-like" feeling to the music, it has

been composed in 6/8 time, as have many pieces about

pirates. This great piece captures the spirit of pirates

on the high seas.

The Odyssey is an ancient Greek epic poem, dated

around 600 BC, by the poet Homer. It tells of the

events that befall the Greek hero Odysseus in his long

journeys after the fall of Troy and when he, at last,

returns home. This feeling of adventure and mystery

has been captured in this original work set in three

short movements.

This mournful piece is based on a Canadian folk song

which is an account of the Battle of the Plains of

Abraham, where the British, led by General Wolfe,

captured Quebec City from the French, under General

Montcalm. This lyrical arrangement makes use of rich

harmonies influenced by jazz and pop music. There

are some great solo sections to feature a talented flugel

horn, cornet and euphonium member of the ensemble.

This title aptly combines the basis for the piece and the

person it was written for. Tenth grade trumpet player

Alex McCarthy would come to brass quintet rehearsals

and, rather than warming up on long tones or lyrical

studies, he would play excerpts from the Denis Di

Blasio tune Coconut Champagne which was written

for Maynard Ferguson and his band. This piece uses

that melodic material as a base for this upbeat samba

tune. There is a solo section for cornet and a written

out solo has been provided.

Cornet Soloiststand away from group



This piece was written in the thirteenth century by an

unknown composer. It has been set using a single

melodic line as many Gregorian chants were

constructed. One cornet player is asked to stand away

from the group. This is to emulate the call and

response between a soloist and congregation at a

church service found in many denominations. This is a

very effective treatment of this lesser known

Christmas carol.

Solo Cornet 1



Pat-a-Pan is a very rustic Christmas piece that is set in

a round beginning with two cornets, adding a solo

horn then euphonium. The percussive "drone" parts

add a distinct colour to this piece. The round builds to

a glorious climax giving way to an odd duet pair -

tubas! The piece ends how it began, quietly with a

rustic flare.

In the tradition exemplified by Mozart in his "Musical

Jokes", Jeff Smallman has written a work for brass

band that should bring a smile to every face. As all

conductors know, not every player in a band learns at

the same speed and, therefore, mistakes are bound to

Canon by Johann Pachelbel is one of the most famous

and recognizable pieces of classical music. The

treatment of the melody in this arrangement follows a

popular Baroque tradition, the concerto grosso. This

technique utilizes a small group of soloists that were

supported by the remainder of the ensemble. In this

arrangement, the solo instruments are 2 solo cornets

and 2 euphoniums which have the majority of the

technically scalar passages as well as the lyrical

melody line. The “chamber sound” created by this

arrangement is a welcome variation from the tutti

sound that is commonly found in brass band writing.

euphoniums. The name Car-Tune refers to the sound

of the horn of the old European sports cars. This is a

thrilling original by Kenneth Bray that shows off his

Dodge City is an exuberant piece designed to take you

back to the time of the old west. As the title implies,

this is a work that will bring to mind stagecoaches and

sagebrush, cowboys and cactus, sheriffs, showdowns

and whatever else reminds you of those frontier days.

Quick and lighthearted, the opening and closing

sections frame a lyric middle section. Dodge City has

captured the atmosphere of a bustling city from the old

west and is sure to captivate performers and audiences

The idea for this march originated from a

conversation that took place in the pine forests of

Camp Borden, Ontario, during Basic Recruit Course

with the Canadian Armed Forces. The composer

listened as one of his instructors spoke passionately

about the possibility of a new kind of army, an army

that would bring peace to the world rather than war.

And even though the day when that goal is truly

accomplished still lies, unfortunately, sometime in the

future, it is true that the honourable role of

peacekeeping has now become a major focus of both

Reserve and Regular armed forces in Canada.

Handel’s most frequently performed and most famous

oratorio is probably best known for the famous

Hallelujah. The Hallelujah is the grand chorus that

caused the King to rise from his seat and as all good

subjects, the entire audience rose with him. This

tradition holds true even today reminding us of the

great beginnings of this powerful music. This

arrangement has been lowered a tone from the original

into C concert. The treatment of the Solo Cornet part is

quite different here. To allow for a clearer, more

balanced line, the Solo Cornet part has been split into

This work was originally written as a contest entrance

piece for the theme song for the 1967 Expo in

Montreal. The concert band arrangement, by Kenneth

Bray, has truly captured the spirit of this concert

march. The melody is played by all including the low

brass and tubas. Written in typical march style with

some interesting musical twists, this will have your

audience marching in their seats.

This is a chorus from Iolanthe in which the all-male

chorus (played in this arrangement by the low brass)

this light hearted piece ideal for playing at a concert in

Sir Arthur Sullivan wrote many pieces for operettas

but none was better received than the music to H.M.S.

Pinafore. It had a terrific 700-night run once it opened

and its popularity continues today. This arrangement is

the Overture which captures many of the famous and

tuneful themes found in that operetta. Light-hearted

and fun, this music is a toe-tapper for audiences and a

thrill to play for musicians.

Composer Donald Coakley was asked by the Pastor of

St. William's Roman Catholic Church, in Philadelphia,

Pennsylvania, to write a hymn based on verses he had

written about the parish's namesake. What developed

is this powerful prelude. Fanfares in the cornets and

trombones, runs in the upper voices and melodic

material throughout the ensemble make this a powerful

opener to a concert.
