Teaching Ideas

• Students listen to the recording. Younger children can march or move to the track. Highlight the strong rhythms and volume of the main theme. Contrast with the gentler improvisation section.

• Point out the long note at Bars 4 and 8. Younger children move to the music and to freeze on the long notes.

• Students play along with the recording using untuned percussion. Use a group of strong sounding instruments with the march and contrasting instruments with the gentler section.

• When the students are acquainted with the track, try playing the main theme by ear.

• This piece was originally written for recorder and can be played on most tuned instruments.

• Encourage students to develop their awareness of each other’s improvisations.

• Encourage students to try varying approaches, EG. melodies which move by step/leap, fast moving rhythms/long melodies which allow space etc.

• Try this simple improvisation activity as a vocal piece with students.
