Nigel’s Style

From what I can assess from watching many of Dicks music videos, most are staged so they are explicitly staged for the production of the video. Because he works with many artists signed to major record labels, they prefer staged videos to be used to promote their artist better with close up shots and high production values.

Some have a narrative to create a meaningful depth to the music and the lyrics in the song to make the song connect with the audience as it tells the story.

Some rock videos he has directed with bands like guns n roses are staged but are shown performing live

Nigel’s Style

Some of the songs he directs music videos for have very little narrative in the lyrics, where there is no clear story in the song. This allows him to be much more creative an create a video that he can make based on how he feels towards the song and the lyrics. For example, Champagne Supernova by Oasis does not have a clear narrative, but the psychedelic lyrics influence the visual style of the video like the stretching of the camera lens (may have been influenced by the Beatles Rubber Soul album cover-a favourite of the band. Also the watery sound effects in the song changes the visual mood of the video from using cold colours to using psychedelic techniques with the camera.
