The Midwest Alphorn Retreat was created by John and Chris Griffith in 2009 to provide an opportunity for alphorn enthusiasts from all over the United States to gather for five days of “total immersion” in the alphorn. This retreat was an

outgrowth of their German Band Ein Prosit, and their members who played Alphorn, Alphorngruppe Alpentraum. This group has performed in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Missouri, California (Disney), Wisconsin, Tennessee

at IHS, in 2017 at the at the Valais Drink Pure International Alphorn festival in Nendaz, Switzerland.

The ensemble also maintains an active outreach program, promoting the horn and its music in Washington’s schools.

With a roster boasting some of the most active freelancers in the Chicago area, the Chicago Horn Consort is the city’s only all-professional horn choir. Since 2008 the CHC has been performing a year-round calendar of events at libraries, schools,

and churches. Recent notable appearances include “Picasso on the Plaza” at the Daley Center and the “Tribute to Dale Clevenger Appreciation Concert” with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Most days you can find our members teaching at De Paul University, North Park University, Northeastern Illinois University, Northern Illinois University, University of

IL at Chicago, Music Institute of Chicago, Merit School of Music, Old Town School of Folk, Sherwood Conservatory, and many of the fine high schools in the greater Chicago area. Many concerts in the region involve CHC members, including the Chicago Symphony, the Lyric Opera, the Elgin Symphony, Lake Forest Symphony, Chicago Sinfonietta, Ars Viva! Sym-phony, Grant Park Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, “Star Wars In Concert,” Barry Manilow, Mannheim Steamroller, Josh Groban, Celtic Woman, Andrea Bocelli, and shows on any stage in the theatre district and

surrounding areas. Much of the music CHC performs is written specifically for the group as they are fortunate to have sev-eral talented arrangers among their ranks. These arrangers help the Chicago Horn Consort meet their mission of providing

accessible classical music to new audiences through the horn choir medium.

In Fall 1996, The New Mexico State University Horn Choir, (Affectionately known as the NMSU Corno Crew), was cre-ated by Horn Professor, Ms. Nancy Joy. “The NMSU Corno Crew” includes both Music Majors and Non-Majors. During the spring semester, they invite community, professional and middle and high school hornists to join the “Grand Finale”, aka “The Mass Blast”. Inspired by a strong foundation of horn ensemble playing at Wittenberg University’s School of Music, Nancy created this ensemble for her students to experience the “classics” of the horn choir literature, the opportunity to premier newly commissioned works and to present outreach concerts in various communities. Invited as a featured ensemble, The NMSU Corno Crew has performed at the IHS Symposiums in Athens, GA.; Beijing, China; Tuscaloosa, AL; and Denver, CO.

Under the leadership of Dr. Ashley Cumming, the ensemble consists of undergraduate majors and non-majors from Kentucky, Indiana, Tennes-see, Illinois and Missouri. The ensemble has also performed at the Mid-South Horn Workshop, at Murray State, and in their community.

The IUP Horn Choir is comprised of undergraduate and graduate music majors, minors, and horn enthusiasts at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). Students study with Dr. Heidi Lucas. They perform in the IUP Horn Choir, as well as in the IUP Marching Band, IUP Wind Ensemble, IUP Symphonic Band, IUP Symphonic Winds, and various chamber ensembles, including Horn Quartets, Brass Quintets, Woodwind Quintets, and other configurations. The IUP Horn Choir has performed at the 2015, 2016, and 2017 Northeast Horn Workshops, hosted the 2016 Northeast Horn Workshop in January of 2016, and hosts an annual Horn Day. Domenico Ceccarossi was known internationally for his virtuosity, method books, commissioning new works for horn, his own caprices for horn, and traveling throughout Europe with his with his opera-singing wife. This recital is a

tribute to Ceccarossi’s artistic endeavors. Ceccarossi commissioned Castel Del Monte, whereas the Variazioni Concertanti celebrate the genre of soprano, horn, and piano. The second half of the program is a modern interpretation in the spirit of Ceccarossi. You will hear the world premiere of the final movement of

Against The Sky. Lastly, Between Us Now was written for my opera-singing wife, and myself.

“I threw a Shoe at a Cat” is a work composed for solo horn by internationally renowned composer Catherine Likhuta. Join the composer and horn soloist Peter Luff for an in depth lecturer/recital

investigating the process surroundingthe creation of this work and others for solo horn.Catherine has written ten virtuosic works featuring French horn. Her horn music has been commissioned, performed and

recorded by prominent horn soloists including Peter Luff, Denise Tryon and Adam Unsworth. Catherine is known for collaborating with her commissioners and personalising her compositions, reflecting the style of those particular horn players

in each piece. Her concertino for five horns entitled Hard to Argue (2014), commissioned by Peter Luff for QSO Horns, became the winner of the 2014 International Horn Society Composition Contest, Virtuoso Division.
