Background of the Experience The neighbourhood Rubem Berta Porto Alegre, Southern Brazil Poor urban community. Approx 78000

people First community in this city that has its

own complementary currency called ‘Rubi’ Products and services produced by the

neighbourhood are sold on street fairs Use of VLC methodology.

Planning Phase Instrodi is working in Brazil since 2002

developing communities in the South and in the Northern areas by empowering them economically.

The InStroDI’s VLC methodology has proved to increase on average 10% poor’s income in Rubem Berta.

To provide qualitative food for poor children

To realize the supply of food in two ways:

that the children do not learn ‘assistentialism’ as being profitable

that the children get used to work for a better future for themselves

To demonstrate to public and private sectors that poor communities are competent

To work towards sustainable exploitation of the restaurant

To create local work opportunities

Actual Situation Building Process started in November/2006 Expected launch activities in March/2007 No. of Beneficiary – 150 persons per day No. of New jobs – 20 No. of Meal per day – 240 full capacity Expected Income Generation to cover costs

– after the first year - R$ 6.600 per month

kindergarten that tries to take care of the street children;

80 Students from the Local Schools needing an opportunity of earning Rubis;

Total of 500 project members involved on generating work opportunities;

Restaurant facilities fully used.
