iPads for 2012-2013By: Jasmine S Gutierrez

Did you know that iPads are coming next year? Seventh grad-ers will be getting iPads in replacement for textbooks.

The Sweetwater Union High School District had approved the iPads on February twenty second of this year. According to the SUHSD website, beginning in July of 2012, 7th grade students in the Sweetwater District will receive an iPad and will have access to electronic versions of all textbooks and other learning applications. In addition, staff will be working on de-veloping lesson plans and ways of integrating the devices into their daily activities to engage and enhance student learning.

iPads will take the place of textbooks and will have the same concept as the book but in a popular electronic device.

Cow-A-Bunga, micro ice creamery and expressoBy: Breanna Hamlin

Do you think your summer is just going to be staying home doing absolutlely nothing? Well, you can change that. IB is right around the corner to go and have fun with friends on hot summer days. After all that salty seawater you gulp down, you would want a nice ice-cold sweet snack. Right off the pier is Cow-A-Bunga, with its big red oval sign it’s hard to miss. Cow-A-Bunga is a micro ice creamery and espresso.

So, not only can you buy ice cream, but also coffee and things like ‘frappabungas’ Although they do have an espresso, most of their sales are of their homemade ice cream. The owners are Nelly and Fabrice Gaunin. Their daughter, Anais Guanin, tells us the story of the start of this wonderful ice cream shop. “ My dad was a full-time chef, and only saw my brother and I in the mornings, so he decided to buy the ice cream shop to spend more time with them.” Cow-A-Bunga was started in 2006. It’s open from 8:30am to Sunset. They make fresh waffle cones daily. One scoop is $2.00, 2 scoops is $3.00, 3 scoops is $4.00 and 4 scoops is $5.00.Mexican Chocolate Mocha, Mint Chip, cookies-n-cream, strawberry, dark cherries, chocolate chips, rainbow sherbert, cheesecake, chocolate, butter pecan, frozen yogurt are some of their many flavors. All of their ice cream is homemade. Toppings are $0.50 each and homemade waffle cones are $0.50 too.

Right near the beach, it’s always available for a nice walk on the pier, or a fun day at the beach.

I Want One!

I scream , You scream, We all scream for ice cream!

Congratulations to all the Eighth graders who will be promoting this year, 2011-2012. Go class of 2016

Students will be able to access their textbooks on their new iPads.

Vegetarians at MVMBy: Caytlin Rico

Do you like to eat tofu over ribs? How about veggie burgers over all beef burgers? Several students at MVM prefer things like tofu and veggie burgers, over regular meat. These students and staff are considered vegetarians, and there are more than you think, not only in our school but in the United States as well. According to a 2008 article published on raw-food-health.net, 3.2 percent of the United States population, are vegetar-ians, that is equal to 7.3 million people.

So why, you may ask, do these people prefer to eat soy in-stead of meat? There are several reasons. Malana Larson, and eighth grade student here at MVM, said, “I decided to become vegetarian because I saw commercials and movies about how animals are killed and abused. It disgusted me so much that I didn’t want to eat meat anymore.” Another reason people might become vegetarian is to support family members or friends. Mrs. Trejo, a teacher on campus, says, “The reason I became vegetarian was to support my youngest daughter while learning new recipes together.”

As you can see there are many reasons people want to be-come “plant eaters”. Despite what people may think, there are plenty of delicious foods vegetarians can eat, like veggie lasa-gna, steamed veggies with rice, and even spaghetti. People who don’t eat meat can still have everyday foods that meat eaters can eat. So next time you go to a restaurant, consider asking for a vegetarian meal. You will be surprised the variety they might have.

It’s a warm, sunny Friday afternoon in Imperial Beach, you just got out of school and what’s a better way to unwind then going to the beach for a fresh smoothie. The Imperial Beach farmers market is the perfect place to get fresh vegetables, fruit, meats, fish and much more. The farmers market is every Friday from 2:00 to 7:30pm at the pier. It’s a perfect place to bring your friends, family, and even your pets!

Many students at Mar Vista Middle enjoy coming to farmers market after school on Friday’s. Bethany Kipp says “The farm-ers market is a great place to get foreign food, Bellas Crepes’ sells French food and provides many options for crepes!” The market also provides foods from places like, India, Argentina, and an abundance of Chinese seafood. MVM’s Favorite T.V. ShowsBy: Melissa Carrasco

With so many T.V. shows on the air, which is the one that stands out the most at MVM.

People watch T.V. Shows when they get bored, want to know what is happening with his or her favorite celebrities, want to laugh, or just see something intense that makes them want more. I wanted to know what the number one T.V. shows were here at MVM.

Students were asked during lunch which was their ultimate fa-vorite show. These are some of the most popular answers: Family Guy for comedy, Pretty Little Liars for mystery, Silent Library for game show, Jersey Shore for reality T.V., and Make It Or Break It for drama. But why do they like these T.V. Shows? Brandy Forsman: Pretty Little Liars is a very interesting show.Nicole Diaz: Pretty Little Liars is very interesting and it has a lot of drama. Tatyana Garcia: Silent Library is very funny and I like it because they make them do funny things but can’t laugh.Cheyenne Dillon: I like Family Guy because it has an interesting plot and funny anime.Liana Cota: Jersey Shore is full of drama and makes me laugh.Laura Sanchez: Make It Or Break It is about gymnast and I love it be-cause I was one.All in all, MVM’s favorite T.V. show over all is Jersey Shore due

to its stars, comedy, and drama.

Mar Vista Middle school club bringing the school to the 21th cen-tury with Legos.By: Pablo Cuellar

You may have not noticed this, but MVM is creating robots with Legos! It started as an idea from three teachers, Mrs. Tom, Mrs. Trejo, and Mrs. Catalina. These three teachers ideology consisted of buying lego’s that could be built into robots and assembled by students. Then with a small group of students this idea became a reality.

Every Monday of the week, the students met diligently to work on their robots. It took months for them to finalize the robots after, however in the end it all paid off. Later on the students divided into two teams guided by two teachers Ms. Tom and Ms. Trejo. Each team made two robots one a heavier model and the other an agile model.

The “Tank” version proved difficult to manage during the com-petition later on while the versatile one had a superior advantage on it’s heavier counterpart. When the robots were finalized the teachers organized a competition to test the better robot. The com-petition contained 3 courses. First off was “Ball Pit”, a time chal-lenge were the robots had to collect the largest amount of tennis balls and place them in a bucket. The agile model light weight and fast design along with it’s simple mechanics proved to be advan-tageous over the heavier slower “Tank” who besides being slow had extreme difficulty picking up balls. In the end the lightweight robot won the round.

Next came a time race through a maze in which yet again the ag-ile robot beat “Tank”. The last round became a combo of time chal-lenge, maze, and ball retrieval. In this final round the robots had to carry three balls across the maze in the fastest time as possible. However, things took a turn for bad for the agile robots team whose wireless control ran out of battery and the team had to switch to a wire remote that drastically complicated things for them. Though this proved an advantage for the “Tank” team, the other team was able to surpass the challenge and complete the round successfully. The final round score was three balls for Agile-bot and zero for the “Tank”.

No surprise, the Agile-bot won the competition due to its easy to manage simple design versus the “Tanks” complicated fault ridden design. The students who attend along with the parents reported that seeing this was extremely entertaining and really does rep-resent a big jump for MVM. The teachers hope to continue this robotics club next year and invite anyone who has creative skills and willing to work in a team. Thru this the teachers wanted to inculcate teamwork and pragmatic problem solving.
