opere creat ive dei maestr i del design moderno erano v is ib i l i so lo nei musei o in pubbl icaz ioni specia l izzate. Ri facendosi a l la t radiz ione del design

real izzata nel l ’operato del Werkbund, a l le teor izzaz ioni del “Neue Sachl ichkert” , a l le associaz ioni ar t is t iche ed art ig iane, come l ’ inglese Arts and Craf ts,

che s i proponevano di co l legare s inerg icamente ar te, ar t ig ianato e industr ia, s i g iunge a considerare in una nuova prospett iva i l grande patr imonio d i

r icerca formale e funz ionale espresso nei mobi l i , negl i oggett i del v ivere quot id iano.

Da questa intu iz ione puntualmente approfondi ta con i l passare degl i anni é nata la p iù ampia e coerente col lez ione di mobi l i d i design prodotta

e d ist r ibui ta da un’unica società: ALIVAR. L’at tenz ione posta nel l ’osservare i l panorama cul tura le del nostro secolo, a l la r icerca d i autor i le cui opere

d i arredamento sono quel le che megl io espr imono i l gusto contemporaneo, ha portato a r iprodurre nei “Class ic i del mobi le moderno” autor i not i a l vasto

pubbl ico come Mies Van der Rohe, Alvar Aal to, Marcel Breuer. Ins ieme a quest i anche a l t r i designers a l t ret tanto va l id i e d i un’at tual i tà sconcertante,

The inspired idea which is stil l today a guiding concept of Alivar originated in 1984. However the true origins go back to the 60’s, an era in which the

creative works of modern design masters could only be seen in museums or specialized magazines.

The grand heritage of formal and functional design as expressed in furnishings and everyday domestic objects was seen in a new light thanks to the Werkbund

initiatives, the theories of the “Neue Sachlichkert” and the arts and crafts associations such as the British Arts and Crafts which provided a new insight into the

dynamic merging of arts, crafts and industry.

It is on the basis of this stylistic intuition painstakingly refined and developed through the years which has led to the creation of an extensive and

coherent collection of designer furnishings, produced and distributed by the same company: ALIVAR. The deep insight into the cultural spectrum of this century,

and the search for those artists who best express contemporary tastes has led to the reproduction of the works of famous masters such as Mies Van der Rohe,

Alvar Aalto, Marcel Breuer, featured in “The Classics of Modern Furniture” range. As well as the works of less well known artists, but equally valid and amazingly

up-to-date, such as Jean Michel Frank, Takehiko Mizutani, Frederick Kiesler, Gerald Summers, Wassili and Hans Luckardt, Isamu Noguchi, George Nelson and

Jules Leleu.

Philological accuracy is the basis of this master furnishing collection and the ALIVAR MUSEUM catalogue (featuring 230 products with bibliographic

description, history of the origins and creative inspiration) has been transformed into a valuable book in its own right and will be distributed in bookshops as a

source of reference and information; forming an anthology of higly elegant and formal furnishings throught time, which go beyond the limitations imposed by

fashion and trends.

These furnishings ranges which are continually refined and updated on the basis of studies and research are further enhanced by the addition of new

models each year which, while remaining faithful to the original designs in terms of the materials and forms, are now offered to the consumers of today.

La qualità difficilmente si riconosce a prima vista. Alivar vuole sottolineare come tutti i mobili prodotti dall’azienda, così come questo catalogo, sono il risultato di una attenta analisi sulle scelte

tecniche, produttive e commerciali da seguire per l’ottimizzazione del prodotto.

La qualità Alivar é garanzia di ergonomia, comodità e funzionalità con una particolare attenzione all'assorbimento della seduta, alla cura dello schienale e all’imbottitura dei cuscini all’altezza reni.

Imbottiture realizzate in piuma d'oca lavata, sterilizzata e garantita, in poliuretano espanso schiumato a freddo e in dacron. Rivestimenti tutti di prima qualità: tessuti in fibre naturali o pelle. Cromature

di grande durata con trattamento anticorrosione e ancoraggio. Le saldature vengono testate con sistemi innovativi. Essenze come faggio, ciliegio, betulla e acero provengono da apposite coltivazioni

nel totale rispetto della natura. I legni sono controllati e trattati successivamente con vernici atossiche e antingiallenti per mantenere inalterati colore e venature. Le materie prime utilizzate per le

strutture, acciaio, ferro e legno sono certificate e sottoposte ad ulteriori prove e trattamenti all’interno dell’azienda. Tutto questo é qualità per Alivar, certificata UNI EN ISO 9001:2008.

The quality is not immediately apparent. Alivar wish to highlight the fact that all the furniture that produces, as for this catalog, are the results of a detailed analysis of the technical production and

commercial sides to be followed in order to guarantee the best possible product.

Alivar quality is a guarantee of comfort, and functionality with particular attention given to the seat contour, the care taken in the design of the back and the padding of the lower back cushions.

Padding: from washed, sterilized and guaranteed duck down to cold foamed polyurethane foam and dacron. All fabrics covers are of top quality using natural fibres or leather. High resistance chrome-

plating with an anti-corrosion and fixing treatment. All weldings are tested using innovative systems. Wood used such as beech, cherry, birch and maple, comes from special plantations in total

respect of nature. Wood is checked and subsequently treated with anti-toxic and anti-yellowing varnishes in order to preserve the original colour and veining. Raw materials used for the frames,

such as steel, iron and wood are certified and subjected to further tests and treatments within the company. This is the Alivar quality, certified UNI EN ISO 9001:2008.

il marmo cristallizzato è un materiale nuovo composto da fibre di cristallo e marmo, prodotto con una tecnica simile alla lavorazione del vetro, che gli permette di avere un assorbimento quasi inesistente ed una brillantezza perfetta. Tutta la lastra è omogenea e uguale senza venature e senza differenza di colore ed è molto resistente al graffio. crystallized marble is a new material, consisting of crystal and glass fibre, produced with a technique similar to that of the glass processing, allowing it to have a nearly inexistent absorption as well as a perfect brilliance. The whole plate is homogeneous and uniform with no veining and without colour differences and is very scratch-resistant.

“muSeum” nasce dall’idea di aliVar di riunire in un’unica collezione il design relativo ai Grandi maestri, superando il concetto del singolo articolo per dare un riferimento storico e cronologico

completo al mondo dell’arredo. le nostre ricerche sui disegni originali e sui materiali utilizzati dai Grandi maestri, ci hanno permesso di essere riconosciuti in campo internazionale come un

riferimento tecnico e didattico della materia.

a questo proposito abbiamo eseguito per conto di differenti enti pubblici e privati italiani ed esteri varie manifestazioni espositive di carattere culturale con i prodotti relativi a questo periodo; lo

stesso “libro muSeum” è spesso utilizzato come riferimento didattico per la cura storica e tecnica che esprime. il superamento della produzione del singolo autore a favore di uno studio più

ampio e generale del periodo di riferimento, del costante e difficoltoso lavoro di ricerca e documentazione ed infine della precisione delle nostre riedizioni, rappresentano il nostro messaggio nel

mondo del design dell’architettura, dove l’evoluzione culturale si riconosce nelle mutazioni del gusto e dell’ambiente che ci circonda o del quale desideriamo circondarci.

da un punto di vista strettamente legale, per chiarire espressioni più commerciali che etico professionali, peraltro ben conosciute dagli addetti ai lavori, la legge italiana relativa al diritto d’autore

eSclude dalla sua tutela le opere che rappresentano carattere industriale inscindibilmente connesso al valore artistico (art. 2 n°4 l22 aprile 1941 n°633) che anche nel nostro caso esclude ogni

diritto vantabile da noi o terzi. Tale opinione trova riferimento giuridico anche dall’insegnamento della SuPrema corTe di caSSazione, che riferendosi alla sedia “red and blue” di Gerrit

Thomas rietveld, ha statuito l’inesistenza di diritti d’autore su ogni opera “pensata o pensabile esclusivamente in funzione di carattere utilitario dell’oggetto destinato alla produzione industriale” e

cioè per ogni opera di utilità immediata, la quale non può essere concepita o pensata indipendentemente dalla sua funzione (sentenza del 27 gennaio 1977 n°3238).

i modelli in questione non sfuggono dunque al principio della libera riproducibilità delle forme estetiche, salvo naturalmente casi specifici o connessi alla normativa relativa alla correttezza della

concorrenza, e non concernente i prodotti presenti nel nostro catalogo. un ulteriore concetto che ci vede allineati è relativo al riferimento della SuPrema corTe di caSSazione che ha giudicato

leciTa la Fedele riproduzione della poltrona WaSSilY di marcel breuer ritenendo che le forme di particolare pregio estetico non possono tollerare modifiche (cassazione 26 giugno 1980

n°4006). come appare chiaro ed evidente aliVar si è ispirata, con successo e pieno diriTTo, non alla produzione industriale del singolo articolo di autore commercialmente interessante, ma alla

riedizione storica e tecnicamente fedele di un periodo fondamentale dell’evoluzione del design moderno, mantenendone in vita non solo le grandi impronte che hanno condizionato la cultura

dell’arredo di oggi, ma anche quei dettagli che ne hanno composto i passaggi culturali. riteniamo di poter concludere con orgoglio affermando che il nostro messaggio della “collezione muSeum”

è diretto in primo luogo al piacere di riunire concettualmente l’evoluzione storico culturale del periodo da noi studiato, per poi ricrearne le immagini reali.

aliVar was founded on the concept of uniting designs by the Great masters of industrial design in a single ‘muSeum’ collection. The intent was to surpass the concept of individual pieces,

providing a complete chronological and historical reference to the world of furniture. our research into the original drawings and materials used by the

Great masters has led to our being internationally recognised as a technical and educational reference point on the subject.

in fact, on behalf of various public and private institutions both in italy and abroad we have created numerous exhibitions and displays at the cultural level on modern industrial furniture design.

The very same “muSeum” hard cover book is often used as an educational textbook on the merit of its historical and cultural content.

opting for a wider study of the design culture of the period in question rather than focussing on manufacturing articles by a given designer sends a clear message to the architectural design

community. This is backed up by our constant efforts and focus on research, documentation and achieving manufactured precision of our re-editions of these original designs. Such focus is

paramount in the world of design where cultural evolution is manifested by changes in taste and environment, be it that which surrounds us or that which we would like to be surrounded by.

From a purely legal perspective, and to clarify more commercial rather than ethical and professional issues (factors well known to those in the industry), on the subject of copyright the italian

legislation eXcludeS all works of an industrial nature with inseperable artistic value (article 2, no. 4 of decree 22 april 1941, no. 633). in our case this involves all rights which could be claimed

either by ourselves or by third parties. This fact has direct legal corrolation in the judgement passed by THe iTalian SuPreme courT oF aPPeal with reference to the case of the “red and

blue” chair by Gerrit Thomas rietveld. in this case the court established the non existence of copyright for all items that are “conceived or conceivable exclusively on the basis of the utilitarian

nature of the object destined for industrial manufacture”. in other words, for all works of practical utility which cannot be conceived or immagined independently from their functionality (sentence

passed on 27 January, 1977, no. 3238).

The articles in question can therefore be freely reproduced in their esthetic form. exceptions are of course made for specific cases or for designs protected under the ciVil code with reference

to acceptable competitive behaviour. none of these, however, apply to any of the product designs present in our catalogue. another pertinent case in our favour was the Supreme court of

appeal’s decision regarding the WaSSilY chair by marcel breuer. in this case it was decreed riGHTFul to accuraTelY reproduce the shapes and the particular esthetic value of that design

(decree no. 4006 of 26 June, 1980). it should now be evident that aliVar has, both successfully and with Full leGal riGHT, aspired to the industrial manufacture not of a single designer of

commercial products but, rather, to the historical re-edition of technically correct and loyal reproductions of this fundamental period of modern furniture design. in so doing we have endeavoured

to keep alive not only the great influences which have conditioned the culture of contemporary furniture, but also those details which comprise their respective cultural evolution. We therefore

believe that we can rightly conclude and affirm with pride the ethos behind our “muSeum” collection. That is, our efforts are directed firstly at the joy of conceptually bringing together the

historical evolution of modern furniture design and, secondly, at recreating actual images of it.
