    Microwave heating experimental data

    Equipment and material information

Microwave oven power: 900 W (Nominal output at 100% power se

Fraction of power on HIGH: 100 %

Fraction of power on MEDIUM: 55 % (From equipment specification sheFraction of power on LOW: 10 % (From equipment specification she

    Batch vessel diameter: 95 mm

    Batch vessel height: 110 mm

Batch vessel mass: 80 g (Including lid, but without water)

    Batch vessel material: polypropylene

Batch vessel heat capacity: 1800 J/(kg C) (Approximate value over 15-95C)

    Process fluid: water

    Operational notes

Process fluid temperature was measured by an infra-red (IR) thermometer from the outside of the bat

The IR thermometer was calibrated against a standard thermometer at about 55C by adjusting the e

The measurement error was approximately 3C.

The batch vessel was placed in the same position in the apparatus for each test.

The oven wall temperature was measured from time to time during the experiment; linear interpolati

used to fill in missing values.

The lid rested lightly on top of the batch vessel, so that if any vapour was produced it was mostly cont

inside the batch vessel, and the vessel contents did not become pressurised.
