    MOBILES

    TO THE

    RESCUE!

    24 MYMOBILE SEP 15 to OCT 14 2008

    spotlight

Anand Singh brings to you some real

life incidents, which display the power

    and reach of cellphones

    July 12, 2008,

    Supratim Dutta, an execu-

    tive with HCL, was on

the way to his office inGurgaon, Haryana. He

was traveling in the office cab.

    Suddenly, the driver lost control

and hit the Metro barricades on

    Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road in Delhi.

The impact was so intense that a

five feet long and two-inch wide

    iron angle pierced through the

    bonnet and the dashboard into

    Supratims (who was sitting next

    to the driver) torso.

    Despite that, Supratim acted

quickly. He tried to call his fatherbut as he was out for morning

walk. So his mother picked the

call and then Supratim told her

about the incident. After that he

    rang up his colleague Akshay

    who sent Saurabh Aggarwal,

    another friend who was nearby,

    to the accident site.

By the time the police and

    ambulance reached the site, and

the angle rod was cut with the

help of gas cutters, it was peak

traffic time on the M-G road.

Here too the Delhi police used

    their mobile phones to inform

the traffic Police and got the traf-

fic diverted from that area. This

helped them to take Supritam to

    the Jai Prakash Narayan APEX

    Trauma Centre, AIIMS, without

wasting any time. When theambulance reached the hospital

    security guards informed Dr

    Sushma Sagar and Dr Biplab

    Mishra on their cellphones.

    August 3, 2008Priti Narayan, a teacher of

    English at Ramjas School, Pusa

Road, was waiting at the Tilak

    Nagar Metro station with her

    nine-year old son Siddharth.

When the train arrived and all

    boarded it, Siddharth realized

that his mother had been left

    behind at the station!

As the train left the station,

    passengers asked the scared child

    his mothers cellphone number

and asked her to come to the

    Subhash Nagar station by the

next train. Priti Narayan, whowas initially afraid for her sons

safety, later said that she was

reassured once she spoke to him

    on the cellphone. She thanked

    technology for reuniting her with

    her son quickly and without

much ado or waste of time and

    emotion.

In July, there was another inci-

dent where the tail of an airplane

touched the runway pad and got

    damaged while landing at the

    Delhi airport. The passengers

were not aware of what had actu-

    ally happened. There were no

    media photographers or cameras

to beam live images of the inci-

That day I went for a morning walk leaving my mobile at

my home. Suddenly my son called my wife and explained

the situation to her. She then informed me about our sons critical situation. I

was completely nervous and called Dr Mukhopadhyaya at AIIMS.
