51. Teeth need fluoride to stay strong and fight decay. You get fluoride in two important ways: • From the outside — like fluoride

toothpaste • From the inside — like fluoridated water

2. Most bottled water does not contain fluoride. • If your child drinks bottled water, tell

your dentist! He/she may prescribe fluoride supplements.

3. Baby teeth affect permanent teeth.• They “save space” for adult teeth to

grow in straight.• Losing them early due to decay can

cause pain and crooked teeth.

4. You should floss for your child every day.• Flossing removes plaque

brushing may miss. • Your child should be

ready to floss alone when he/she reaches age 8.

5. A “Plaque Attack” happens every time your child eats or drinks.• Each attack lasts 20 minutes, and can

cause tooth decay.• The only beverage that doesn’t cause a

plaque reaction is water!

6. Dental sealants can help prevent cavities.• Your dentist can apply this painless

plastic film to the grooves in your child’s permanent molars.

Proper Brushing in Easy Steps

Share these easy steps with your child!

1. Place brush at an angle along outer gumline. Wiggle gently back

and forth. Repeat for each tooth.

2. Brush inside surface of each tooth, using wiggling technique in Step 1.

3. Brush chewing surface of each tooth.

4. Use tip of brush to brush behind each front tooth, both top and bottom.

5. Don’t forget to brush your tongue!

Keys to a Bright Smile: For Your Child

1. Brush at least twice a day, especially after eating breakfast and before bedtime.

2. Use fluoride toothpaste.

3. Limit the number of times you eat snacks each day.
