Hull From Mr Trent Citrano, Head of School I want to extend my deep appreciation to all of you who were able to attend Open Day yesterday. Your being here is important not only for you being able to see what your child’s learning looks like on a day-to- day basis, but it also sends a crucial message to your child that their education is significant. I was personally impressed by how many parents came to this year’s Open House. One of the best turnouts in MIS history, for sure. Most of all, I appreciated parents getting right into the classroom and learning alongside their children. When we as parents truly put ourselves in the shoes of our children, we are making a meaningful and lasting con- nection with them. I hope that everyone was able to cope with the aftermath of Typhoon #15 this past week. With high winds, extensive power outages and disruption to so much transportation, I am glad that we erred on the side of keeping our chil- dren safe at home on Monday. I know that some families are still without utilities and we send them our best wishes on a quick recovery. Fortunately for the school, with the exception of losing a soccer goal and the willow tree on the kindergarten playground, we had a minimum of damage. “The most overwhelming key to a child's success is the positive involvement of parents.” - Jane D. Hull

From Mr Trent Citrano, Head of School I want to extend my deep appreciation to all of you who were able to attend Open Day yesterday. Your being here is important not only for you being able to see what your child’s learning looks like on a day-to-day basis, but it also sends a crucial message to your child that their education is significant.

Most of all, I appreciated parents getting right into the classroom and learning alongside their children. From Mr Anthony Hall, Deputy Head of School Greetings from MIS. In this week’s edition of Nano-hana, I would like to highlight the efforts that teachers and students put in to ensure the walls of MIS are full with colourful, interesting and inspiring displays. Every term, the teachers are asked to put up fresh displays around the school and they go to great lengths to ensure that their students’ work is given pride of place on the walls.

I am always impressed by the variety and richness of the displays

and taking a closer look, you get a great sense of how much MIS

students achieve from day to day. Next time you visit MIS, please

take the time to look at the displays. I am sure you will be as im-

pressed as I am. Below, you will be able to see some of the new dis-

plays from this term. Please enjoy.

Kindergarten News

NANOHANA

From Mrs Ali Haggett, Kindergarten Coordinator

Learning from Natural Disasters Natural disasters can bring relevant and personal learning to children. Unfortunately, the willow tree on our kindergarten playground fell to the ground during Monday’s typhoon. This tree was a common focus area for our avid bug collectors, a place to play house and a great retreat from the hot sun. What can children learn from this?

How wind can be very strong What is a typhoon? The root system of a tree

Safety in a storm Weather conditions Why are trees important? Story telling – Why did the tree fall?

Writing words of what they saw or felt when they saw the tree Planning – What would they like to replace the tree?

Happy Birthday! Kindergarten Students of the Week

Grade 5 Share Their Love for the Grandparents

Last Friday, the students in G5 gave a heartwarming tribute to their grandparents in the elementary assembly. The chil-

dren shared their fondest memories of their grandparents and the special talents of their grandparents (swimming at

age 88 and killing cockroaches with big karate chops, to name just a couple). They then acted out a picture book about

how grandparents and grandchildren feel special about one another. A bond like no other! Their singing at the end

along with a slideshow of them with their grandparents brought many a tear to the eyes of those in the audience.

Grade 4 Study the Science of Water As part of their studies of the water cycle and conservation, this Tuesday, the students in Grade 4 went to the Tokyo Water

Science Museum. The interactive exhibits kept the students engaged in their learning throughout their time there. The children

took away waves of information to bring back to school to continue their research on water. It was a splashingly good time!

K2G Roars at their Assembly! This Tuesday, the student of K2G shared their most recent learning on dinosaurs in their kindergarten assembly. The par-

ents, staff and students in the audience not only learned about what the children thought was special about different

dinosaurs but were also entertained by several dinosaur songs and dances. BRAVO and ROAR to K2G for a truly excel-

lent presentation!

Snack Shop Open to Grades 4-6

On Tuesday 17th September, Grade 5 will be opening a Tuck (Snack) Shop in the G5 area. Children are allowed to bring in up to ¥300 and will be able to buy snacks and drinks, which will all be healthy. The Tuck Shop will be open to Grades 4, 5 and 6 only. It will be open on Tuesday and Thursday at break times, but not lunchtimes. The Tuck Shop will be running for four weeks. All profits will be donated to the Red Feather Campaign to help people all around Ja-pan. Students’ allergies have been considered. We look forward to seeing everyone in upper elementary at the Tuck Shop!

Thank you,

Leona Saunders G5G
