The broad scope of the conference program is intended to bring people together from across the mental health and related sectors, including people with lived experience, service providers, policy-makers, and academics, to engage, discuss and debate the reform processes that will dominate mental health and suicide prevention for the coming decade.

Keynote presentations will look across the lifespan to present key opportunities, ideas and challenges for broad system reform. We are delighted to welcome our international speakers, Dr Roberto Mezzina, fChair, International Mental Health Collaborating Network and Professor Rory O’Connor, Director of the Suicidal Behaviour Research Laboratory in Glasgow, Scotland, as well as a range of eminent local and national speakers.

Two panel discussions will frame the Conference, providing further insights into the requirements for system reform. A lived experience panel will open the Conference, considering how the system needs to change in order to better serve people living with mental health issues. A service provider panel will then close the Conference with a discussion of avenues for change within and across key service sectors.

Three streams will explore mental health at individual life stages (early years to youth, adulthood and later life) with a fourth stream devoted to suicide prevention. Each stream will be facilitated by a content expert with Consumers and carers introducing and closing each stream with their thoughts and reflections. Individual presentations will provide examples of innovative service models and approaches to practice, prominent research studies, and ways of responding to system and workforce needs.

We gratefully acknowledge the generous support of the Victorian Government, as Major Sponsor for this Conference and the other organisations and businesses that have also made this event possible.

Angus Clelland, CEO Mental Health Victoria.

2020 marks the start of an incredible reform journey for mental health and suicide prevention with the convergence of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System, Productivity Commission Inquiry into Mental Health, Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety and a host of other national inquiries and developments.

Mental Health Victoria received excellent support from well-known organisations for its events and conferences. We thank our sponsors and exhibitors for their support of this important event.
