GeoCue New Features User’s Guide

New Features in GeoCue 6.0 Products 1-1 15 March 2009 Copyright 2009 GeoCue Corporation

1 Introduction GeoCue 6.0 is the GeoCue feature upgrade release for winter 2009. GeoCue has now been in heavy day‐to‐day production (in commercial release) for about 5 years. Many of the new features that have appeared in GeoCue are a direct result of the feedback that we received from our user base of GeoCue customers. GeoCue Version 6.0 and the associated CuePacs contain a number of new features. The highlights of these new features are described in the following sections.

Note: GeoCue Server is available in three versions. Sections that apply only to a specific version will be denoted as follows:

• GeoCue Workstation (W) • GeoCue Professional (P) • GeoCue Departmental (formerly Enterprise) (D)

2 GeoCue Server and GeoCue Client This section contains the highlights of new features in the core GeoCue products; GeoCue Server and GeoCue Client.

2.1 Renaming of Enterprise Server GeoCue Enterprise Server has been renamed to GeoCue Departmental Server. We strongly recommend separate GeoCue Servers for data intensive operations such as DMC Post‐Processing and LIDAR data processing. To avoid arguments about the semantics of “Enterprise”, we’ve renamed this version of the server Departmental. This more clearly reflects the deployment design. GeoCue Server is offered at three different feature levels. These levels are described in the following subsections.

2.1.1 GeoCue Workstation (W) GeoCue Workstation is a new packaging of GeoCue intended for field operations or for systems development. It comprises:

• A node‐locked GeoCue Client • A node‐locked GeoCue Server (without the Command Dispatch System)

The GeoCue Client and Server must be on the same logical machine. The system is single user (only the GeoCue Workstation Client can communicate with the Server).

2.1.2 GeoCue Professional Server (P) GeoCue Professional Server is a GeoCue Server without the Command Dispatch System (distributed processing engine). GeoCue Professional Server is node‐locked to a logical machine but supports multiple floating licensed clients. This is an appropriate solution for those users who do not need dispatched processing.

2.1.3 GeoCue Departmental Server (D) GeoCue Departmental Server is a GeoCue Server that includes the Command Dispatch System (distributed processing engine). GeoCue Departmental Server is node‐locked to

GeoCue New Features User’s Guide

a logical machine and supports multiple floating licensed clients. This is an appropriate solution for those users who need dispatched processing. GeoCue Departmental Server is required for the new GeoCue Project Dashboard.

2.2 Modified In‐Progress Color Code in GeoCue We have slightly changed the color of “In-Progress” from Cyan to Blue (Figure 2-1). This was motivated by users with mild colorblindness who have difficulty differentiating between green (the complete color) and cyan.

Figure 2-1: The new "In Progress" color

2.3 Reorganized Interface Features We have reorganized several of the information panes in GeoCue Client to improve usability.

2.3.1 Reorganized Checklist Pane The checklist pane has been reorganized into a tabbed pane. We have moved the “Unordered” checklist steps to a separate tab and named this tab “Utilities” since this is more indicative of the use of unordered checklist steps (Figure 2-3). The primary checklist tab has been named “Processing” (Figure 2-2).

Figure 2-2: The Processing tab of the Checklist pane

Figure 2-3: The Utilities tab of the Checklist pane

Note that switching between tabs automatically updates information in the details pane to reflect the currently selected and visible step. Also note that if a step is selected in each tab, the visible step will be executed when the action button is pressed.

2.3.2 Reorganized Checklist Details Pane The Checklist details pane has also been segregated into tabs. This makes access to data residing in this section easier. For example, if you keep the “History” tab selected, you can immediately see the results of step processing without the need to scroll in this pane (Figure 2-4).

2.4 New Production Management Information The setting and updating of Production Management information has been significantly enhanced in GeoCue 6.0. Management information includes (* indicates new to version 6.0):

• Planned User • Planned Start Date • Planned End Date • Budgeted Effort (BE) • Actual Effort (AE) • *Estimate to Complete (ETC) • *Estimate at Completion (EAC) • *Effort Units • *Variance • *Percent Variance

Production management information can be viewed via the Management tab of the Checklist Step Details pane (Figure 2-5). This information is:

• Initialized: o Automatically by settings in Environment Builder o Interactively by user key‐in o In groups via Project Administrator

• Modified: o Interactively by user key‐in o In groups via Project Administrator o Via entries into the Checklist Step Completion Status dialog

• Reported: o Project Administrator o Project Dashboard

Figure 2-5: Management Information

You can now set a Budgeted Effort (BE) per unit using Environment Builder – Checklists tab, Modify Assigned Checklist Steps function (Figure 2-6) such that BE is automatically computed based on the size (length for linear entities, area for polygonal entities) of the entity. This makes setting BE for complex projects automatic. Mass individual settings can be made with the optional product, Project Administrator (renamed from Project Manager).

You can now enter Actual Effort (AE) for prompt steps (Figure 2-8). This allows you to track effort for steps that you are performing outside of GeoCue but tracking on a per‐entity basis.

Figure 2-8: Setting Actual Effort for Prompt steps

2.5 Checklist Step Instructions You can now add Checklist Step Definition Guide (Also referred to as a Checklist Step Instruction, CSI) to each checklist step. These instructions can be any document that you choose. The CSIs are stored in the Common Folder as pointed to by the GeoCue Server and thus are available to all clients. They are associated with a Checklist Step in the Modify Checklist Step tab of Environment Builder (see Figure 2-9). They can be overridden in the Modify Checklist section of Environment Builder.

\When a CSI has been associated with a checklist step, a “?” icon appears in the checklist step (Figure 2-10). Pressing the icon loads the CSI using the Windows document mapping system. It is not necessary that the entity associated with the step be in the Working Set. NOTE: Checklist Step Instructions are an extremely powerful method of maintaining your ISO processing instructions.

2.6 New Image Subsystem Prior to release 6.0, GeoCue used a highly customized (by us) version of the Map Objects image display system. This placed some fairly severe raster display limitations on GeoCue. In release 6.0, we have completely re‐engineered the raster display system, basing it on the ubiquitous open source library, GDAL. Improvements include:

• Internal Overviews (no longer will you see the multiple sets of external overview files attached to raster entities).

• Support for significantly more image types as native rasters • Direct display support for variable bit depth images (8, 12, 16, 32 floats, etc.) • Direct display support for n band images where n can be greater than 3 (e.g. 4 band

DMC images, 7 band Landsat, etc.) • Support for rotated images (rotation matrix) • Advanced Transparency modes supported • Basic image enhancement is now supported on a per‐image basis • Bring to top, Send to back commands now supported on image right‐click • Significant display performance enhancements

The GeoCue Client image options are accessed by selecting one or more image entities and then selecting the Enhance Image command from either the Map View right click menu or the Legend tools. The Raster Options dialog is depicted in Figure 2-11.

2.8 Entity Manager Pre‐filter Entity Manager now includes a pre-filter to improve load performance when working in projects with a large (i.e. >10,000) entities. This pre-filter allows you to pare down the layers that you are interested in examining prior to loading Entity Manager. This results in significantly faster loads in large projects. The pre-filter supports quick setting from either selected entities or entities that are in the Working Set by using the tool bar buttons at the top of the dialog (Figure 2-13).

Figure 2-13: Entity Manager pre-filter

NOTE: Entity Manager is a “non‐modal” dialog. This means that you can keep Entity Manager up during your entire GeoCue session. Entity Manager has bidirectional connectively to the graphics in the Map View. This provides a very powerful query tool.

2.9 Multiple Layer Creation You can now specify the creation of multiple layers in the create layer dialog (Figure 2-14). When creating multiple layers, the “Name” entry will be used as a base name with each layer having a sequence number appended. For example, if the base name is “Ortho_”, the created layers will be named “Ortho_1”, “Ortho_2” and so on.

2.10 Point, Line Processing Status Symbology Added Points and lines now correctly display their processing status symbology (e.g. colorized according to the color code of their processing checklist).

2.11 Support for NOAA Mean High Water Vertical Datum GeoCue now supports the NOAA/NGS Mean High Water (MHW) datum as a standard vertical system. Be advised that, as of the release of GeoCue 6.0, NGS had defined 17 zones. The system as implemented in GeoCue is end-user updateable as NGS releases new definitions. Please contact GeoCue support if you need to update these datums.

2.12 Email Notification Tied to Checklist Status You can now set triggers on checklist steps. These triggers send an email to a list of GeoCue users and/or groups when the state change occurs (for example, if a DMC Radiometric Processing step fails, send an email). Email alerts are set using the Checklist Step tab in Environment Builder. Figure 2-16 depicts an alert set for the step “Process LAS in TerraScan” on the Exception (error) transition.

3 Command Dispatch System (D) A number of enhancements have been made to the Command Dispatch System.

3.1 Automatic Log Cleanup in Dispatch Manager Options are now provided in the Configuration ►Options tab of Dispatch Manager to automatically delete task processing history records based on time or quantity (Figure 3-1).

Figure 3-1: Setting Task Processing history auto-delete options

3.2 New Options for Cascaded Commands In the previous version of the Command Dispatch System, two sequential commands in the Processing Checklist could be set as cascaded such that the CDS would execute the sequenced commands if the prior command completed with a Success exit code. However, these commands were forced to run on the same processing node (that is, if Step n of Entity m run on Cyclops, then Step n+1 of entity m would also run on Cyclops). This approach to cascaded processing can cause problems under several conditions:

• Licensing – The target processing node for step n contains a license for the application associated with the nth step but not the n+1 step.

• Load balancing – Situations occur where, for example, a node has a capacity of executing one instance of step n but multiple, simultaneous instances of node n+1.

GeoCue New Features User’s Guide

New Features in GeoCue 6.0 Products 3-2 15 March 2009 Copyright 2009 GeoCue Corporation

Command setups in Environment Builder now allow you to specify if cascaded commands need to run on the same node. If this option is not set, the cascaded commands are entered into the processing queue and run independently of their predecessor command. The Auto-Start Next Step option has been moved to the Checklists tab of Environment Builder, Modify Group, Modify Step dialog (Figure 3-2). Note that you can now force the subsequent step to run on the same machine as the current step. This is useful when your command is caching data on the local machine.

Figure 3-2: Auto-Start Next Step option

3.3 Restricting Commands to a Single Instance per Machine Occasionally you need to specify that a particular command can run only a single instance on a target machine regardless of the resource requirements of the machine or the command. Examples of this are when a particular application is licensed such that only one instance can run or when some architectural limitation exists that causes multiple instances on the same machine to fail (an example is the GPP process of the

Intergraph DMC Post-Processing System). You can now specify this condition using the Modify Command dialog of Environment Builder (see Figure 3-3).

Figure 3-3: Restricting Commands to a single instance per machine

3.4 Dispatch Queue Latency Improvements We have made significant improvements in the Command Dispatch System queuing process. Under certain conditions, moving a command from the queue to a processing node could take up to 30 seconds. This has now been reduced to an average latency of 2 seconds.

4 Environment Builder There are a number of new features in Environment Builder, the tool used for configuring GeoCue workflows.

4.1 Auto Budgeted Effort These settings, on the Modify Processing Step dialog of the Checklists tab, allow you to set auto compute parameters for Checklist steps that are members of a checklist.

Figure 4-1: Setting Auto Budgeted Effort

4.2 Setting a Checklist Step Instruction Guide You can now set the full path to a document that represents a Checklist Step Instruction guide on the Modify Checklist Step dialog in Environment Builder (Figure 4-2). Note that the path that you set must be a common directory accessible by all GeoCue Clients.

5 GeoCue Project Administrator GeoCue Project Administrator (formerly Project Manager) has been completely rewritten. It is now an add-on module to Entity Manager (Figure 5-1). GeoCue Project Administrator (just like Project Manager) requires a separate license per simultaneously executing instance. The new scheme of integrating with Entity Manager provides a number of valuable new capabilities:

• Much faster load times • Ability to use in concert with all Entity Manager features such as attribute query • Non‐model (meaning it can remained displayed while you work with the GeoCue Client) • Supports the new Auto Budgeted Effort feature
