LOIS LOWRY

Lois Lowry was born on March 20, 1937, in Honolulu,Hawaii. She taught herself to read when she was still atoddler. Ms. Lowry still talks of the excitement she feltwhen she realized that letters made words, words madesentences, and sentences combined to make stories. Bythe age of nine, she was writing her own stories.

After graduating from high school, with the words“Future novelist” written under her photo in theyearbook, Lois Lowry attended Brown University for twoyears. Then she left school to get married and raise afamily. Ms. Lowry finished her college education in 1972and became a free-lance writer and photographer.

In addition to her books for young readers, Lois Lowryhas written textbooks and newspaper and magazinearticles. When she writes, she uses memories of her pastto help readers feel “less alone.” Ms. Lowry believes thatadolescence is often a very lonely time and a time whenit may be difficult to communicate with others. She feelsthat good books can help make growing up seem lesslonely and isolated.

Ms. Lowry has four grown children: Alix, Grey, Kristin, and Benjamin. She divides her time between her home inBoston and her farmhouse in New Hampshire. When sheis not reading or writing, Lois Lowry enjoys sailboats, music, and movies.

When the Germans invade Denmark in1940, they meet little resistance. KingChristian X knows that his small army is nomatch for the Nazi forces. He surrenderspeacefully, hoping to spare the lives of asmany of his subjects as possible. TheDanish people quickly learn to live with thepresence of soldiers on the street cornersand without such ordinary items as coffeeand sugar. Although they do not want theGermans in their country, they realize thatit is impossible to fight back. However, when Hitler decides to “relocate” the Jewsliving in Denmark, the Danish peopleorganize an extraordinary undergroundnetwork to help their Jewish friendsescape to the safety of neutral Sweden.

Ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen’s bestfriend is Ellen Rosen, who lives with herfamily in the apartment downstairs. Whenthe Johansens realize that their Jewishneighbors are in danger, they quicklydecide to help them escape. Mr. and Mrs.Rosen go into hiding, leaving their

daughter with the Johansens. Ellenpretends that she is Annemarie’s sister, even fooling the soldiers who come to theapartment in the middle of the nightlooking for the missing family.

At great risk to themselves, Annemarieand her parents help the Rosens get to theseaside village where Uncle Henrik lives.Like many of the fishermen along theKattegat, he has created a special hidingplace in his fishing boat. Under the coverof darkness, the Rosens slip aboard andhide beneath the deck. At dawn, UncleHenrik takes them to the nearby shores ofSweden, where Ellen, her parents, andthousands of other Danish Jews can findsafety and refuge.

As a result of her role in Ellen’s escape,Annemarie learns important lessons aboutcourage, loyalty, and friendship. She alsobegins to understand the individualsacrifices that must be made in order tocreate a world in which all people can besafe.
