    There are an estimated 15 million blind in India

    They constitute 49% of the total no. of persons withdisability

    80% of these visually challenged reside in Rural India

    26% of total number of blind in India are children80% of all visual impairment can be avoided or cured.

    WHO ARE WE?

    NATIONAL ASSOCIATIONFORTHE BLIND, KARNATAKA came into existence in

    the year 1977 under the umbrella organization of NATIONAL ASSOCIATION

    FORTHE BLIND, INDIA to cater to the needs of education, employment and

    complete rehabilitation of people with vision impairment and low vision in

    the state.

    The National Association for the Blind, Karnataka Branch, pioneered

    cradle tograve services for the visually challenged be it socio economic

    rehabilitation of children, youngsters and aging, prevention of blindness,

    education, vocational training, empowerment of blind persons and many

    such activities across the state of Karnataka

    MOBILITY& ORIENTATION TRAININGFIRSTSTEPINTOAHOLISTICGROOMING

    Six weeks training builds and boosts their

    self confidence making the Visually Impaired

    independent and mobile in the environment

    Students receive cane travel training in local

    areas. Emphasis is on practical use of skills

    & includes:

    Human Guide Cane Technique

    Address Finding skills

    Route Planning

    Travelling in local Buses etc.,

    LIVING SKILLS TRAINING :

    Instruction occurs in the Hostel accommodation

    provided to students. Starting from the first

    week, students begin learning how to :

    o Shave, Bathe, Fold Clothing, Ironing Cloth

    o Clean - Roommates share theresponsibility for keeping their rooms clean.

    Curriculum includes learning about cleaning

    products, cleaning skills, and adopting

    effective cleaning habits.

    o Wash their clothes, basic laundry skills &

    Labelling Techniques for Clothing

    Objective of this Rehabilitation & Basic TrainingCentre is to enhance job opportunities or self

    employment options for uneducated visually

    challenged individuals by intensive vocational

    training in the following areas:o Training on Semi Automatic Power Loom

    o Ornamental Candle & Incense Sticks making

    o Making Paper Cover, Office Files

    o Coir Rope / Door Mat making

    o Recaning Chairs

    o Making Diyas,

    Demonstrations on Marketing Skills is also

    organized.

    NANNAKANNUPROJECT~ PAEDIATRIC EYE CARE

    SERVICES

    Nanna Kannu, a unique comprehensive programme to reach out to children

    of age group 0 16 with visual defects. The project implemented in

    partnership with Shankara Eye Hospital , Sightsavers International and

    Government of Karnataka and would reach out to 1,50,000 children in the

    first phase of the programme.
