been a frequent attendee of NACE| CARS, is that our show has al-ways been in a major destinationcity, whether it was Orlando, Ve-gas or New Orleans. But we’venever had it in Detroit. Not thatit’s not a great city, we’re just notcompeting with Mickey Mouseand slot machines. We are, how-ever, in the mecca and birthplaceof the automotive industry.”

Also, they were moving theshow from a November time-frame to July. And just two daysbefore Risley and ASA made thatannouncement last year that theshow was moving to Detroit, thecity filed for bankruptcy.

Yet, 12 months later, Risleystood before the crowd of 400 orso and said he couldn’t be more

happy with the decision the boardmade to bring the show to theMotor City.

“The local support has beenunbelievable, and by local, I’mtalking about the people who arehere every day. When we’ve beenin other cities, we’ve gotten sup-port, but not the local support likewe’ve gotten here.”

Risley then recognized variouscompanies for rallying around theshow, and noted the $300 millionrenovation the Cobo Center is un-dergoing.

He also noted changes to theshow this year, including addingtours so attendees could enjoythe city as well as the show, and20,000 square feet of space dedi-cated to live demos with running

vehicles, welding and refinishing– a first in U.S. history, he said.

“As a result of these changes,I’m proud to say we’re up 40 per-cent in registration over the sametime last year,” said Risley.

Risley concluded his openingcomments by saying, “I wasn’t surewhat to expect when we moved theshow to Detroit nine months afterour last show ended in November,so we appreciate the exhibitors’and attendees’ time, money and re-sources they dedicated to be heretoday. This has all been made pos-sible not by ASA, its board of direc-tors or staff, not the showmanagement company, Stone FortGroup, but all of you - because ifyou didn’t embrace and support it,we wouldn’t be here today.”

BodyShop Business Publisher Scott Shriber presented Tom Griffin with the 2014 Multi-Shop Executive of the Year Award and Rachel Minshall withthe 2014 Single-Shop Executive of the Year Award at yesterday’s OpeningGeneral Session.

The award has been given out by BodyShop Business since 1984 to a truecollision repair visionary who has experienced great success by being for-ward-thinking, overcoming challenges and persevering.

This is the first year BodyShop Business handed out two awards recogniz-ing both single-shop and multi-shop owners and managers.

Tom Griffin

Griffin’s collision career spans 30years. He now leads a two-storeoperation in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, that’s described as a “thriving fam-ily business that provides an ex-traordinary experience forcustomers and a rewarding workenvironment for employees.”

“What is truly unique is the cus-tomer-centered focus Tom instillsin every one of his employees. Hewill often ask, ‘How is that rel-evant to our customer?’ andconstantly challenges us notto ‘chest pound’ but to hon-estly evaluate everything wedo from the customer’s pointof view,” says an employee.

Griffin is also known for

helping young people find their wayin the industry and championingwomen in the industry, hiring andnurturing many female employeesin his company.

Outside of his business, Griffinhas served as past president ofCoyote Vision Group and presidentof the Automotive Service Associ-ation Greater Cleveland Chapter. He also sits on the board of theSolon Chamber of Commerce.Mayfield Collision Centers is alsothe only body shop to participatein GuitarMania, a Greater Cleve-land community public art projectthat has raised $2 million forUnited Way and the Rock and RollHall of Fame and Museum’s edu-cation programs.

Rachel Minshall

Minshall has been in the auto bodybusiness for 21 years, starting as a

mechanic in 1996 in the Ford Assetprogram. An injury ended her careeras a mechanic after only two years, but she persevered, switched direc-tions and became the first femaleservice advisor at Soerens. Thatwas the moment she realized whatshe was born to do: help people bygetting their vehicles fixed right thefirst time.

In 2006, another opportunityarose, this time to grow the bodyshop, so she became the first fe-male body shop manager at So-erens. Right away, she startedupdating all the training and certifi-cations at the shop. Within the firstyear of taking over the shop, sheand all the technicians became I-CAR Platinum and the shop be-came I-CAR Gold.

“What makes Rachel different isthat she is kind and fair to techni-cians and customers,” says an em-ployee. “She goes above and

beyond to help the customer’severy need, such as staying lateto write an estimate or going tothe customer to write the esti-mates if needed. She states atleast 20 times a day, ‘Whatever iseasier for you,’ and she goes tothe extreme to help people.”

In an over capacity training session,Snap-on’s Chris Sobieski presenteda two-part class on vehicle align-ment and how collision and me-chanical shops need to not only fixthe traditional alignment angles, butthe sensors and computers.

“Vehicle behavior that is normallyassociated with wheel alignmentsuch as a pull or drift may not bedirectly related to the tires andwheels,” said Sobieski, EquipmentSpecialist for Snap-on Equipment.“Being able to diagnose, repair andreset electric power steering andelectronic stability control as part ofthe alignment can be just as impor-tant as the angles.”

Classes covered the importanceof wheel alignment on today’s vehi-cles, understanding the importance

of restoring the vehicles dimen-sions and geometric angles to fac-tory conditions so the dynamicdriver assist and stability controlprograms perform as designed.

“It might be just one visual signlike excessive brake noise or duston just one wheel may be a signthat a late-model vehicle with astability control system may havean alignment angle problem or andissue with one of the sensors,” saidSobieski.

Sobieski also looked at how per-forming alignment checks andalignments can be profitable andmake a quicker return on invest-ment if the right alignment equip-ment is purchased.

Sobieski will be at Snap-on booth(#31003) during the show.
