Dear friends,

Through a long history of hard work, experience and innovation the Netherlands have acquired its important role within the global potato sector. It was already in 1885 that famous Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh showcased the potato importance in our culture by painting the renowned 'Potato Eaters (De Aardappeleters)'.

And still today, a typical Dutch meal consists of vegetables, meat and (most of the times boiled) potatoes. Although often considered as a simple meal, just 'spiced' with some salt, this diet has proven to be very healthy and nutritious. Actually, some people believe that the high consumption of potatoes results in the fact that the Dutch are now the tallest people in the world. With my height of 1.90 meters and having grown up in The Netherlands, I would be a living example. Like any Dutch child, I ate potatoes on almost a daily basis.

Having a long successful track record, potato is now considered to be the food of the future. The high yield potential and nutritious value make the vegetable indispensable when it comes down to nourish the rapid growing global population. To utilise the beneficial characteristics of potatoes, enhancements are required along the whole food chain. In order to do so, we believe that there is no need to reinvent the wheel, since the Dutch are most willing to share the long term expertise with the world.

By the establishment of the Dutch Potato Centre in India, we hope thatalso the Indian potato industry will benefit from the available knowledge and expertise. By representing an entire potato value chain – from seed to fork/finger – the Dutch Potato Centre will be able to bridge the current Indo-Dutch knowledge and technology gap. By adapting their knowledge to the specific Indian context and showing commitment with a long term approach, the Dutch Potato Centre members intent to create in mutual beneficial 'win-win' situation.

We believe that concentrating on the improvement of only one aspect in the Indian potato food chain will not maximise overall success, but that an integrate chain approach is preferential. Or in other words: 'The chain is as strong as the weakest link', especially when it concerns food products!

The subsequent pages will give you more information about the various Dutch Potato Centre members. I hope it provides a sufficient introduction in the wonderful world of Dutch potatoes.

The Dutch Potato Centre is part of Netherlands Agro, Food & Technology Centre (NAFTC) – India. We are based in New Delhi and available if you have any request or inquiry.

Aloo! The king of vegetables!

With best regards,

Marijn LeijtenDirector

Welcome

From the past 400 years, the Dutch people have felt at home in India. The Dutch were among the first Europeans to reach India and establish trade and cultural relations with India.

Following the footsteps of our forefathers, the modern governments of the Netherlands and India have continued their relations in trade and commerce. More than 100 Dutch companies have established themselves in the Indian market and more than 170 Indian companies have expanded their business in the Netherlands. Netherlands is among the top five foreign investors in India.

These are encouraging numbers; however there is still a great scope of further enhancement of these ties. During these turbulent times it is even more important for these two great economies to maintain strong business relations.

Netherlands has always been one of the strongest economies in Europe with a great focus on agro-food sector. Agro-food sector is a priority sector in the Netherlands and this shows in the fact that the country is the second largest exporter of agricultural commodities in the world. The Dutch industry produces 80% of the world's capacity on poultry processing machinery and over 50% in potato processing machinery. Also, the Netherlands produces 85% of the seed potatoes needed to grow good quality potatoes.

India is aiming to double its food production in the next five years to feed its growing population and the rising middle class. The country also aims to increase the earnings of its farmers. All this requires a lot of innovation, knowledge and technology. To increase the food production one needs good seeds, modern machinery, storage facilities, logistics, marketing etc. It is very important to develop the whole chain rather than only focus on certain parts of the chain. The chain is as strong as the weakest link. The Dutch can definitely help in this.

Establishment of the Netherlands Agro, Food & Technology Centre (NAFTC)-India is one of the most significant steps taken by the two governments in order to enhance the bilateral trade in the agro-food-tech sector. NAFTC-India has taken several important steps to enhance the Indo-Dutch cooperation in the agro-food-tech sector. These steps include the establishment of the various clusters within the organization dedicated to specific agriculture sectors. The Dutch Potato Cluster (DPC) is one of the most important clusters within the NAFTC-India.

The Dutch Potato Cluster (DPC) represents the entire potato chain in the Netherlands. The cluster comprises of the companies ranging from seed potatoes to farm machination companies to storage specialists. The strength of the DPC lies in the collective chain approach.

The establishment of the various Centres of Excellence (CoEs) across the country is one such step. The CoEs will focus from farm to fork in various agricultural subsectors. The CoEs for Potato have been planned in the two most important potato growing states in India; Punjab and Gujarat.

I wish the Dutch Potato Cluster all the best for its future endeavours.

Leader in food processing technology

The Netherlands is one of the world's leading countries in food processing technology. This is the logical result of its position as a world player as second largest (68 billion Euro's) export of agriculture and horticulture products, including processed food. Some examples: Dutch industry produces 80% of the world's capacity of poultryprocessing machinery, 70% of cheese production machinery and over 50% of potato processing machinery.Other strong positions taken by Dutch manufacturers are in systems for bakery, vegetables, red meat and cacao. The total turnover of the Dutch agri-food processing and packaging systems industry is approximately 13.2 billion Euros (USD17.69billion).

NAFTC-India

NAFTC is the public private partnership foundation with worldwideoffices hence also in India. The aim of NAFTC is to promote and represent the Dutch companies in these countries as a group as well as individually to reap the benefits of the integrated chain approach, which has been the source of the success achieved by the Dutch agro food industry.

NAFTC India is established by the FME/GMV branch organisation which is the largest sector association in the agro food industry in the Netherlands partners like the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. NAFTC – India's organisation consistsof a home office in New Delhi and is structured around special product chain centres (such as: Potato, Dairy, Fruit & Vegetables meat & Feed etc.)

NAFTC-India has grown leaps and bounds since its inception. It represents over 25 Dutch companies andvarious organisations (OAE) in India active in the agro food and related industries. The Dutch Potato cluster is one of the most important expertise clusters of NAFTC-India.

Cooperation

World class technology can only be maintained by continuous innovation and close cooperation of the food sector, the systems suppliers and the knowledge institutions for which the Netherlands are famous all over the world. We therefore cooperate closely with partners like the Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs, Wageningen University and Research Centre.

Dutch Potato Centre (DPC at NAFTC-India)

The DPC positions its members in India also as a group to assist the entire potato value chain in India to benefit from the Dutch “Potato” expertise. The DPC is the symbol of the long term interest, strategy and commitment of the Dutch potato sector in India started already with GMV's first “Potato-mission to India” in 1985 and the many subsequent valuable relationships developed. We hope that NAFTC-India DPC will be able to create a win winsituation in India for both “Potato” sides.

Thanks
