Every morning around 6:00–6:30, "Ojuzu–Chodai", a valuable religious activity can be seen. It is that priests bless worshipers patting on the head with Juzu. You can also experience it if you want. Yudanaka-Shibu Spas (湯田中・渋温泉郷), consist of the ninespa districts of Shin-Yudanaka, Yudanaka, Hoshikawa, Honami,Kakuma, Andai, Shibu, Kambayashi and Jigokudani. It takes 40-60min. by Nagano Dentetsu Line from Nagano Sta. to YudanakaSta. or 30-40 min. by bus from Shiga Heights. Shin-Yudanaka,Yudanaka, Hoshikawa and Honami can be reached on foot andthe other spas by bus from Yudanaka Sta. The abundant amountof hot spring water of these spas is one of the largest suplies inJapan. Shibu Spa has its nine Soto-yu (public bath) open only tothose people who stay the night at an accommdation in Shibu. Itsold hot spring resort atmosphere attracts many visitors, andbathing in one after another of all nine Soto-yu washes out one’sworries and is beneficial in warding off evil, maintaining goodhealth, having an easy delivery and promoting longevity.Jigokudani Spa is known as the place where wild monkeys bathein the hot spring water.

Jigokudani Wild Monkey Park (地獄谷野猿公苑), located onthe edge of Jigokudani Natural Park, is where about 270 wildmonkeys are fed three times daily. Visitors can observe themonkeys bathe in the open-air hot spring, especially in winter. 30-min. walk from Kambayashi Spa through Yumichi promenade,or 40-min. walk from Shibu Spa through the roadway. Shiga Heights (志賀高原), located in the center of the Joshin-etsu Kogen National Park in northeastern Nagano, about 30kmaway from Nagano City, is a resort surrounded by some 2,000-meter-high mountains. The panoramic view from the mountains,accessible by ropeways and chair-lifts, is magnificent. Visitors canenjoy a number of sporting activities, such as skiing, hiking, ten-nis, cycling, golf, camping and fishing. Shiga Heights, one of thebiggest ski grounds in Japan, has more than 20 ski grounds, and itis known as one of the world’s top ranked ski resorts. The areais blessed with a virgin forest and many ponds and marshes, suchas Maruike and Hasuike Ponds. A variety of alpine flowers arebeautiful from late spring to the end of summer. It takes 30-40min. by bus from Yudanaka Sta. to the following places in Shiga(kogen) Heights.

Hoppo Spa (発哺温泉), getting off Hoppo Onsen Bus Stop, orHasuike Bus Stop and 8 min. by ropeway to Hoppo Spa. lying atan altitude of 1,600m, is known as the “hot spring above theclouds.” It is popular among tourists, especially hikers and skiers,for taking a rest and getting their muscles back in shape for thenext day.

Mt. Higashi Tateyama (東館山), alt. 1,994m, 6 min. by chair-lift from Hoppo Spa commands a beautiful panorama of theheights surrounded by high mountains and you can expect oneof the finest views in the area. There is a botanical garden on thetop where about 500 kinds of alpine plants are preserved. It isopen all day and admission is free.

Access:From JR Nagano Sta.: 55 min. by JR Iiyama Line to Togari-Nozawa Onsen Sta., then 40 min. by Shinshu Bus to NozawaOnsen Terminal.

Major Places of Tourist Interest:Sotoyu (外湯), 13 public hot spring baths are open to peoplefree of charge from 6:00 to 23:00. The most popular one calledO-yu (literally, “big hot spring”) has a wooden public bath-housereminiscent of the Edo Period. 3-min. walk from Nozawa OnsenBus Stop.

Nozawa Onsen Arena (野沢温泉アリーナ), 5-min. walk fromNakao Bus Stop, consists of spas, sauna, restaurant, and conven-tion hall. Open: 15:00–20:30 (weekdays); 10:00–20:30 (Sat. Sun.& national holidays.) Ogama (麻釜), 5-min. walk from Nozawa Onsen Bus Stop. Inthe recesses of the community is Ogama, a natural monument,one of the springheads of Nozawa hot-spring resort. From thespringhead, hot water of more than 90 degrees centigrade is

always swelling. The hot water tub is divided into big tub, roundtub, boiling tub, bamboo plank tub and lower tub. There are vari-ous kinds of tubs, from a tub of very hot water of 90 degreescentigrade to lukewarm tub. All the tubs are off limits to touristsbecause of safety reason. In the hot tub, vegetables and eggs areboiled, and in the lukewarm tub, they wash vegetables. Frommorning till evening, neighbors are using this springhead as ashared well. This is why it is called the “kitchen for the people ofNozawa”

Major Places of Tourist Interest:Matsumoto Castle⦆(松本城), the symbol of the city, was origi-nally built⦆in 1504 during the turbulent age of the civil wars. Themoats and stone walls of the original castle still remain. Theimposing donjon, now designated as a National Treasure, is theoldest five-tiered donjon among the castles remaining in thiscountry. It commands a magnificent view of the alpine peaks andUtsukushigahara Plateau. Matsumoto Municipal Museum (松本市立博物館), located infront of the castle donjon, has on display over 91,000 artifactsconcerning the archaeology, history, folklore and nature of thelocality. Especially noteworthy are farming implements, folk reli-gion materials and Star Festival dolls. Former Kaichi Gakko (School) Building (旧開智学校), 10-min. walk from the castle, was built in 1876 and is⦆the oldestWestern-style school structure in Japan. The building, now a

Hakuba (白馬), has a superb alpine setting for various kinds ofsports including mountain climbing, skiing, tennis, trekking, andhiking. Tourists can also enjoy a good command of the moun-tains as well as hot springs.

Hakuba Ski Jumping Stadium (白馬ジャンプ競技場), 10 min.by taxi from JR Hakuba Sta., a new symbol of Hakuba, has a 60-meter-high tower building which is open to the public. Tsugaike Nature Garden (栂池自然園), A vast swampextended in the altitude of 2,000 meter. 3 hours walk along thewooden road gives you a very good chance of enjoying alpineflora. 30 min. by Matsumoto Dentetsu Bus from Hakuba Sta. toTsugaike Heights, then another 30 min. by gondola and ropewayservices to this garden.

It is notedfor the sweeping 360-degree view obtainable from there includingalmost all of the peaks of the Northern Japan Alps.Recommended months for exploration of the scenic beauty ofthe plateau are May–Jun., when snow still lingers on the peaks andJapanese azaleas are seen at their best, Jul.–Aug., when the alpineflora come out in all their splendor, and Oct. when the mountain-sides are set aflame with crimson leaves. Utsukushigahara Open-Air Museum (美ケ原高原美術館),located at the end of Utsukushigahara Plateau, has about 450

museum, is topped with a weathercock, and the white walls area fine contrast to the blue roof tiles. The classrooms and audito-rium have been preserved as they were when the building wasused as a primary school. A part of the 70,000 educational mate-rials are displayed. Matsumoto Timepiece Museum (松本市時計博物館), 7-min.walk from Matsumoto Sta., was built in Sep. 2002. Kamikochi (上高地), the center of Chubu-Sangaku (Japan Alps)National Park, is a narrow basin lying at an altitude of 1,500malong the upper reaches of Azusa River and is surrounded bylofty peaks of the Hotaka Range, Mt. Yake and Mt. Kasumizawa.It is the best equipped base for starting a climb of the peaks inthis national park.

Taisho Pond (大正池), 1-hr. walk from Kappa Bridge, wasformed in 1915 by the eruption of Mt. Yake (alt. 2,455m), theonly active volcano in the Northern Japan Alps made by lava andmud, spewed out of the mountain blocking the course of theAzusa River. The scenery is mysteriously beautiful here havingHotaka Ranges and Mt. Yake on its back with the dead trees stillstanding in the pond.

Relief of Rev. Walter Weston (ウェストン碑), is a 20-min.walk from the Kappa Bridge. Rev. Walter Weston, a British mis-sionary, scaled Mt. Yari and other peaks of the HotakaMountains from 1888 to 1894 and popularized the term “JapanAlps” by his celebrated book “Mountaineering and Exploration inthe Japanese Alps.” The⦆Weston Festival is held annually in Jun.

Azumino (安曇野), a plain extending over the foothills of theNorthern Japan Alps, presents a typical pastoral scene withHotaka Town as its center. It is blessed with the charm of scenicvariety all year round. The acacia and apple blossoms come outin all their splendor in their respective seasons. The autumnaltint of trees also allures many hikers to come here. The charm-ing “Dosojin” stone guardian deities are scattered throughoutthe area.

Rokuzan Museum of Art (碌山美術館), 7-min. walk fromHotaka Sta., is an impressive red-walled structure resembling aEuropean church. It mainly holds the works of Rokuzan Ogiwara(1879–1910), a master sculptor of Nagano Prefecture who iscalled the “Rodin of the Orient.” Open: 9:00–17:10 (–16:10 Nov.– Feb.) (enter 30 min. before the closing time) Closed: Mon., theday following national holiday and Dec. 21–Dec. 31. (Open dailyin May–Oct.) Admission: ¥700.

Daio Wasabi Farm (大王ワサビ農場), the largest farm where“wasabi” (Japanese horseradish) is cultivated, is about a 40-min.walk on a hiking trail which begins at Hotaka Station. Rental bicy-cles are available near the station. “Wasabi” is cultivated in theclean water beds built in a shallow, curving valley. The Daio farmscenery is really picturesque, with the fields of the fresh greenwasabi leaves surrounded by rows of acacia and poplar trees onthe embankments.
