Dear Parents and Community members,

Last week Stage2 visited our sister school at Lindfield and spent time exploring

some of the attractions in Sydney. Stage 3 headed off to Canberra and the snow.

Our students received praise from venue staff, the public and other teachers for

their behaviour and engagement. Well done, kids, I’m so proud of you. My

thanks to the seven teachers who gave up their time to plan the excursions and go

away with the children – it’s a 24/7 job with the additional responsibility of

looking after youngsters a long way from home. Thanks, too, to Mrs DeGoumois

who supervised the organisation of both excursions and acted as our liaison with

the various companies.

Today, four of our students are competing in the Broken Hill Public Speaking

competition at Central. Good luck to Ella, Lily, Grace and Blade.

High school taster lessons begin this week. Year 6 students attending Willyama

next year will have an opportunity to sample classes in all the subject areas over

the next couple of weeks. Notes and bus fare need to be returned to the front

office as soon as possible, please. Full winter uniform should be worn.

Next Monday, our choir will be performing at the Eisteddfod. Full winter

uniform should be worn.

Last Friday, the Preschool – Year 2 Athletics Carnival was held in beautiful

conditions at Alma Oval. Well done to all the children who ‘had a go’ at the

various races and activities. Thanks to the staff who organised such a fabulous

day.

Last Wednesday, I was pleased to act as co-host with Mr Fisher (BHPS) to a

number of Sydney principals from primary and high schools who are part of the

City-Country Alliance of Schools. It is through this program that we were

initially linked to Lindfield Public School. The visiting principals were able to

visit the School of the Air, Central, Broken Hill High and Burke Ward as well as

a number of schools in the Sunraysia area. In a couple of weeks another group of

principals is coming out and I am hosting that visit as well. This time, Alma will

be on the list so I can showcase our fabulous facilities and introduce the city folk

to great country kids and staff.

A couple of weeks ago, the Alma kids were introduced to Resilia – a superhero

of self –regulation. She is resilient, persistent, can manage the distractions about

her and is always on the lookout for details that she can use to improve her

learning. Over the next couple of weeks, students will meet another

superhero – Innovatrix. This is part of the How 2 Learn program that the school

has implemented which is designed to teach children how to develop higher order

learning skills, both educational and emotional. Willyama and all three feeder

schools are involved in the program, so the philosophies and strategies will

continue through to high school.

Have a great week!

Regards

Glynis Lugnan

Sydney Excursion

News

Congratulations Stage 2 students! Commendable behaviour, maturity and manners were frequently

applauded throughout their 5 day Sydney trip.

The students marvelled at trains, buses, ferries,

cruise ships and the bright lights of the city.

They met face-to-face with their Lindfield Public

School buddies who welcomed them with a rousing band item and

special school assembly.

The trip highlights were many and varied from the

3D experience at the IMAX theatre to walking the Harbour Bridge to

training with representatives from the

Sydney Swans at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

An immeasurable educational experience.

Canberra & the Snowy Mountains!

Canberra Excursion

News

Stage 3 enjoyed a jam packed week in Canberra. The

weather was beautiful and provided the perfect backdrop

for the week of activities.

The children learnt about Canberra and why the ‘Bush

Capital’ is situated where it is, the hands on and interactive

activities at the Australian Institute of Sport and were even privy to observing the

Australian Men’s Gymnastics team who were training.

During their visit to Parliament

House, the children were

educated on the role of

Australian Government

through role play exercises.

Questacon was a highlight for

the majority of the children.

The galleries and activities

varied and included some

memorable moments and lots

of laughter. The snow trip was

another big highlight for the

children as many of them have

never seen or touched snow

before or experienced an

alpine environment, including

Miss Honeysett.

The children and teachers

found this experience of great

educational value as it also

provided the opportunity to

socialise outside their

hometown.

Congratulations to the Stage One students who have been placed 2nd in the National ‘Words Mania’ competition that is run by Literacy Planet. Students have been competing in this nation wide competition for

the last two weeks, where they have been building as many words as possible with a three minute time limit. This free activity is a fun way to develop spelling skills and knowledge of word families and structures.

There is still one week left of the competition so please encourage your children to log on at home using

their home logins provided by their teachers.

What amazing

designs are being

produced in the

boys’ interest

group being run

by Mr Hopcraft.

We certainly have

some talent here

at Alma!

Why is

arriving at

school on

time

important?

It ensures that your child doesn’t miss out on the

important learning activities scheduled early in the day when they are most

alert...

Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and MUST be explained to the school the same way

as other forms of absence!

It helps your child to learn the importance of punctuality and routine..

It gives your child time to greet their friends before class and therefore...

...reduces the opportunity for

classroom disruption!

2..4..6..8.. Hurry to school

and don’t be late!

The bell will ring to go to line..

DON’T FORGET.. school STARTS

at 5 to 9!
