NAIDOC 2020Supporter PackNovember 2020
Acknowledgment of CountryWe pay our respects to the Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander ancestors of this land, their spirits and their legacy. The foundations laid by these ancestors
—our First Nations peoples—gives strength, inspiration and courage to current and future
generations, towards creating a better Queensland.
NAIDOC Week 2020This year national NAIDOC Week celebrations will be held from the 8-15 November. This follows the decision by the National NAIDOC Committee to postpone NAIDOC Week in July due to the impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic across communities and cities.
Starting from Sunday 8 to Sunday 15 November, NAIDOC Week celebrates the rich histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The 2020 NAIDOC theme is Always Was, Always Will Be, which recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for more than 65,000 years.
All Australians are invited to embrace the true history of this country – a history which dates back thousands of generations.
This year, because we can’t get together as much in person, DATSIP is extending our celebrations beyond NAIDOC Week (8 to 15 November) through to Human Rights Day, celebrated on 10 December.
We encourage you to get involved in NAIDOC Week celebrations and promote initiatives throughout November with your networks.
Please use the information in this guide to promote NAIDOC celebrations.
If you need assistance with any of the information or content in this guide, please email [email protected]

Key messagesAbout NAIDOC 2020 This year national NAIDOC Week celebrations will be held in November, starting on Sunday 8 to Sunday
15 November. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country – a history which dates
back thousands of generations and calls for all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet. Always Was, Always Will Be.
NAIDOC Week is a celebration of the rich histories, cultures, customs and achievements of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
About the national NAIDOC theme This year, the NAIDOC theme Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have
occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. It acknowledges and celebrates that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact
whether in 1770 or 1606 - with the arrival of the Dutch on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula. Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first
engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. Always Was, Always Will Be. acknowledges that hundreds of nations and cultures covered this
continent, with the very first footprints on this continent belonging to First Nations peoples. NAIDOC Week 2020 is about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations history of this country -
which is Australian history.
