Canal CapersThe clue was in the title (and the web

link). We apologise to those readers who were caught out by our little joke in the April News.

As far as we know there won’t be a canal arriving in Nailsworth anytime soon.

Well done to Glos Highways on a speedy and well delivered new

road surface through the middle of town - perhaps some sleepless nights for some, but overall it is worth it!

The best bit was seeing the temporary bollards on the newly painted

roundabout - it has made everyone slow done and again observe the highway code properly and the risk of accidents is gone. It is brilliant!

Can we now have a proper, permanent bollard in the middle of said roundabout? It will mean safety for all and a natural flow of traffic will also ensue.

If the walks could talk! Mike Harvey

would like to thank the many people who through last month’s issue of the Nailsworth News, responded to his request for guinea pigs to trial the WW1 Blue Plaque walks.

Many made contact and walked the walk(s). There was even a couple who were not sure they qualified since they were ‘newbies’ to the area - they had only been here for 3 years! Constructive feedback has already been received and duly noted. Once again, a big thank you!

Don’t forget to talk to us! Most of our news comes from you as our readers.

A word from the MayorHow planning works Commenting on planning is one of our more important responsibilities. The way the town grows and matures is affected by buildings and developments. Council is a statutory consultee on planning. We are informed about all planning applications in the parish (and a few outside if they are likely to impact on us). We are able to comment on most, although for specialist ones such as Listed Building Consent and Tree Orders we do not comment. Our views hold more ‘weight’ than those from individuals so it is important for the town that we comment when appropriate. There are only certain aspects of planning we can comment on For example: Overlooking/loss of privacy • Loss of light • Parking • Highway safety • Traffic • Design. We discuss applications twice a month at the beginning of our full Council meetings. Councillors research applications online, and visit some sites. We also present plans on screen at the meeting, and take note of comments from the public, both at the meeting and online. Council agendas show which applications we will be discussing. For larger developments the developer can approach us beforehand to ask what we are more likely to accept. After the meeting we place our comments on Stroud DC’s Planing portal. For most planning applications Council Officers are delegated to decide, but larger and controversial ones go to the SDC DCC committee for decision.Election By the time this paper hits the streets we will have a new Town Councillor. Unfortunately print deadlines mean

no candidate profiles here. The candidates were Mike Kelly and Colleen Rothwell. So congratulations to our new councillor! The Town meeting and the new Award You’ll see in the centre spread that the Town Meeting was in a new format. The selection of town organisations that put together displays was great, and many people came to see what the town has to offer. Thank you to everyone involved and particularly to the winners of the Town Awards - you make such a difference to our community. Thank you also to Peter Reed, who presented the Town Awards, and who has helped create a new award, the Peter Reed Sporting Award. This will be awarded yearly over the next few years to the person whose life has changed the most through sport. The first presentation will be next year, so over the next 12 months please get thinking about who should win it.

I have enjoyed this year as Mayor and I will be happy to serve as Mayor again if my fellow councillors will have me!

Poppy WaterfallMargaret Marshall made a plea to all knitters via Facebook. There are plans to make a ‘waterfall of poppies’ from the clock tower this November. Many

hundreds of poppies are wanted. Patterns (and sometimes spare wool) can be collected from the TIC and finished poppies can be

taken there as well. Cutoff is likely to be early October, but has yet to be confirmed. After the closing date there will be some artistic discussion as to how the waterfall can be created

based on the number of poppies collected.Margaret’s photo shows the first box full already. More patterns are being asked for so it is hoped

that the project will be hugely successful. Margret is delighted, “It is wonderful how this has caught people’s imagination.”

Edmonds Art has just opened as a new gallery and studio and is the brainchild of Jacki Edmonds who excels in pastels of animals, landscapes and almost anything that you commission from her, though not people!

She started experimenting in oils and acrylics through her own self-taught interest many years ago and, because of her love of animals, soon moved into animal portraits and the use of pastels, something she came across purely by accident. “It’s the perfect medium for my work - I can control the pencil with detail and depths of colour on an animal’s fur far more than with a brush and oils, and the whole concept works very well. I still use oils and acrylics if the need is there!”

Although self-taught with no formal training at all, Jacki’s work is a real joy. Her light and airy gallery has an abundance of pictures for sale and if needed, just give you an idea for portraits of your dogs, cats, horses and more! You can see her beavering away every day in the Gallery - ask her anything you want!

At the moment Jacki is open just in the mornings - she wants to see how things go and she hopes to start ‘art with pastels’ courses in the near future. She has a strong following from very positive Summer Show events, fairs and demos.

Prices are from £75.00 - £175.00 and Jacki works from clear, focused photographs. Examples and plenty of information can be gleaned from her informative website. You can come and watch while your pet portraits are coming to life if you wish!

Open: Monday - Thursday 9 - 1pm, Saturday 9 - 5pm.For further info, contact:

Market Street is one of those little gems that can be found in many an old town. Nailsworth takes pride in having this ancient street and it is surprising that more people don’t know of what is has on offer.Although this Street has experienced moments of boom and decline, it carries the imagination of many and it is gratifying to report that the phoenix rises again. New, relocating, expanding, moving and re-invention abound. Pay this gem of a street a visit!

Just Because has expanded and taken over next door - a wonderful added venture to Andy Evans’ brilliant card shop. In essence, it is a great emporium for all things party! It has all you need in order to organise your own party for almost any age.

Andy and his team offer bespoke packages for a wedding, celebration, summer party, or any kind of party get-together and for any number of guests.

There is so much to see that it is easier to call in and look for oneself; there is so much to choose from … everything for a tea party, bespoke balloons, party bags, pass the parcels, sparklers, balloon bouquets and the rest.

A very popular and new idea is the ‘Personalised Gift’ selection. Download your photo, choose the design to put on a mug, plate, cards, photo frame, iPhone cases or even a cushion (!) and call back in an hour after a coffee down the road and collect! Simples!

Get Vegucated with Asparagasm! Nailsworth is fast

becoming a foodie destination for those in the know, with over twenty restaurants to choose from, all offering different cuisine.

Tucked away in Market Street is one of the newer kids on the block, Asparagasm, offering tasty and healthy lunches, brunches and afternoon

indulgences which are all sugar, dairy and gluten free. What you may not know is that there is also a sister venture,

only a few steps away at The Old Market site, which is primarily a teaching space at weekends.

There is growing interest and demand for plant-based cheeses, which is an area of expertise at Asparagasm. Lucy, Asparagasm’s artisan Cheese Maker, runs half-day workshops where aspiring cheese enthusiasts can learn the tricks of the trade at their state of the art teaching kitchen. These events are gathering quite a following amongst the vegan and ‘free-from’ communities, attracting visitors from as far afield as London and even Portugal!

Using only simple ingredients and natural techniques, students learn about the fermentation processes involved in vegan cheese making, and once they have developed the necessary skills, students are then able to experiment with creating their own flavours.

Classes are kept small and friendly to ensure quality, and all ingredients, course materials, welcome drink, lunch, tastings and cheeses to take home are all included.

As well as all things cheesy, Head Chef Lauren, who has just returned from training with Matthew Kenney in California, is also offering a packed teaching programme. Upcoming classes include heavenly Chocolate Masterclasses, a teaching residency next month at Prema Arts (Dursley) as well as bespoke private lessons, where you can learn how to make all sorts of wonderful food.

For further information, why not visit the Asparagasm Facebook page, or pop in for a chat!

Simon Phetsai of Phetsai Design in Market Street has, after years with a successful stall in Cirencester, located to here in town and put down his roots.

Originally from Thailand, he came over here almost 20 years ago and after working in catering and a salon he realised that people were showing great interest in his jewellery business - so the business in lady’s accessories began.

Some of Simon’s stock is from Thailand and much is home made, but there is always a seasonal change to what he has to offer so keep popping in to see what is new!

Sterling silver, swarvoski crystal, freshwater pearls, mother of pearl etc. are all pat of his designs and they all sparkle like crazy! There is something for everyone with even smaller goods from just a fiver! Costume jewellery, rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets are in abundance and there is something for that special occasion, evening attire or just smart casual.

There is a small section of leather handbags from Italy and some sarongs just to whet the appetite.

Simon’s shop is open Monday - Saturday 9.30am - 5.00pmFB: Phetsai Designs

Bobby and Sally

In our February 2015 issue of the Nailsworth News we brought news of Tibetan terriers Bobby and Sally. They were frequenters to the RSPCA shop and other establishments in town. Their owner Austin gave us the sad news. “My two dogs Bobby and Sally are no more. For many years they visited and loved Nailsworth.I’m sure there are many who will remember them over their times in the town.”

10AM - 3PM

Horsley C of E Primary SchoolAt the end of March, with Easter fast approaching, we welcomed the

lovely volunteers from ‘Open the Book’. A group of local people who take regular acts of worship into primary schools through themed and dramatised storytelling, all without charge.

Using mime, props, costume, and even the children and staff themselves, they present the Bible stories in a lively and informative way.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the ‘Easter Experience’, learning about Palm Sunday, the Last Supper, the Garden of Gethsemane, the Crucifixion, Jesus in the tomb and the real meaning of Easter. All the children in KS2 (7 to 11 years) had the opportunity to explore the carefully and beautifully presented stations, each of which linked with the story of Easter.

Afterwards the children all spoke enthusiastically about the experience. Eden said, “It was really fun!” and Anamaria recounted that, “On the Last Supper, it felt as if we were really there.” Our thanks go to the volunteers from ‘Open the Book’ for making the ‘Experience Easter’ an experience to remember.

We rounded off this busy term with the Annual Duck Race, organised as usual by the Friends of Horsley School. When school finished at 2.15pm, children and their parents all wandered down to Washpool in the sunshine to cheer on their duck(s) as they raced merrily down the stream to the finish line. A wonderful start to the Easter break.

Gary Price, Headteacher. www.horsley.gloucs.sch.uk

St. Dominic’sAt St Dominic’s we

have had an eventful end to the Spring term with children supporting lots of charitable events!

The children entered into the spirit of our glamour day which we held to support Red Nose Day; they very much enjoyed their fashion parade, dance afternoon and the cakes that were on sale. Each house team has led different events to raise money for CAFOD and the East African Crisis Appeal. This has included a pyjama day, wheelie day, decorating and selling cookies and holding a coin race.

After the Easter break children will continue their fantastic fundraising events by holding a milk shake Monday and Toasty Tuesday, when these items will be made and sold at break time. Everyone is looking forward to the summer term ahead, when the children in all classes will be having the opportunity to enjoy outdoor learning days at Copsegrove Farm, Bisley and children from Year 5 and Year 6 will be going on their residential.

The school, parish and Woodchester community will be commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Wayside Cross in June; more information to follow.

Another important date to mark in for your diaries is Saturday 20th May, when the PTA will be running their annual Duck Race in Mortimer Gardens, as part of the Nailsworth festival. Please come along to join us for this fun, family event!

St. George’s and Christ ChurchDear friends,

I am sure that you will have heard it said that Christianity is a ‘prop in the lives of weak people’. Try telling that to the 215 million Christians around the world who experience high, very high or extreme persecution all over the world.

The news told us recently of Egyptian Christians bombed because of their faith, but this is the tip of the iceberg.

In the past, the persecution of Christians was usually the result of Islamic extremists, but recently a new rival has appeared – Ethnic Nationalism. The charity Open Doors which works and campaigns for persecuted Christians said, “While Ethnic Nationalism took an anti-establishment form in the West, in Asia it took an anti-minorities form, fuelled by dramatic religious nationalism and government insecurity. It is common - and easy - for tottering governments to gain quick

support by scapegoating Christians.”In India, a country rising up the list of

those where people are persecuted for their faith, “An average of 40 incidents were reported per month, including pastors beaten, churches burned and Christians harassed,” stated Open Doors. “Of the 64 million Christians in India, approximately 39 million experience direct persecution.”

In such situations, the idea of Christianity being a prop seems somewhat far-fetched! If you would like to know more about the persecution of

Christians, you can look on - www.opendoorsuk.org

The challenge to those of us who claim to be Christians is often that our ‘enemy’ is apathy – both that of others and even our own. Do we really stand up for what believe in, no matter what the cost? Are we even prepared to stand alongside those who share our faith from different churches or alongside those of different faiths? Jesus would …

It’s come to that time of year again when the one word on every teen’s mind is ‘exams’, closely followed by ‘revision’, ‘stress’ and ‘time’.

The entire period of May to June is consumed by doing more, feeling more and having less (of the aforementioned of course).

Although the strain and pressure of participating is daunting to consider, the most important thing to remember is the sense of achievement that comes at the end of it!

For a while, knuckling down into a textbook or six will become a bearable routine and before you know it (but you probably will notice it a bit), you will be able to do as you wish in the Great British sun and celebrate to your heart’s content!

Good luck to everyone starting, continuing or finishing their round of exam years and get back to the flashcards!

Ian Rank-Broadley’s Maquettes in St, George’s.

As you can see from the front page, we are to experience a rare opportunity to see these maquettes.

The maquettes (small working scale models) have been made in preparation for the completion of life size sculptures for the National Memorial Arboretum at Airewas in Staffordshire.

Previously they have only ever been exhibited at the Imperial War Museum, London.

The finished commission represent these same two groups of figures cast in bronze. The Arboretum is the largest war memorial in this country. The casts were made by Castle Fine Arts Foundry at Inchbrook and Llanrhaeadr and were

unveiled by HM the Queen in 2007. Rank-Broadley, who lives locally, has completed a number of important

commissions, is a Brother of the Arts Workers Guild, in 1996 granted the Freedom of the City of London and in 2009 made a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths.

Most of us should be familiar with his work as his effigy of Queen Elizabeth II has been on all UK and Commonwealth coinage since 1998!

His work belongs to a tradition of the finest English commemorative Memorial Sculpture, such comparable forbears would include Charles Sargeant Jagger (Royal Regiment of Artillery, Hyde Park Corner).

Other work by Ian Rank-Broadley can be seen locally, such as at the Abbey Gardens in Malmesbury and his work will be included in the forthcoming Art Festival here in St. George’s, Nailsworth in September.

Nailsworth Silver Jubilee Shield

The winner of the Shield this year is Suki Samra of Lawnside Stores, Forest Green.

Many nominations came in for Suki, noting small random acts of kindness for local people going through a hard time, fundraising challenges such as the 5 Valleys Walk for Meningitis, distributing Nailsworth News, and supporting the Youth Club.

Perhaps more widely known for cooking - producing meals for fund-raising events and generally having an outstanding attitude to the community.

Communities are so much stronger because of people like Suki.

Chamberlain Trophy for Sporting

ExcellenceThe winner of the Trophy for

this year was Phil Butterworth of Forest Green Rovers who runs their Youth Ambassadors Scheme.

Youngsters are our future and by setting up a scheme, that brought many young people into contact with our senior football club, Phil is helping to ensure that the future is bright for Sport in our community.

Phil has worked tirelessly to promote excellent sport, and getting schools’ involvement by arranging for Team Stars to visit them.

One of these Ambassadors (Elsie Heslop) writes on Sport for Nailsworth News. The award was collected on Phil’s behalf by Dane Vince.

Mayor’s AwardsEvery Year the Mayor makes awards to local people who have

made exceptional contributions to the life of our community. This is based on nominations from members of the public and our Town Councillors.

The awards are to publicly recognise the work of people and groups in Nailsworth. There are four different awards as shown here.

Nailsworth Celebrating the

work of volunteersNailsworth Town Council has

revolutionised the way it reports to the Town. It merged the Town Meeting with the Mayor’s Reception to produce an event which would be inclusive to all.

It intended to be a dynamic presentation to the Town and in large measure this was achieved. The first Town Meeting under the new format was a complete success and we believe it to be an absolute Triumph.

There were 30 local organisations represented, and each had a stall displaying the work that they offer to Nailsworth. With one exception these were all groups run by volunteers.

The whole event celebrated the work of volunteers in our community, and to recognise the most exceptional examples of that work, the Mayor presented awards, with the assistance of Pete Reed OBE.

“ . . . an event which would be inclusive to all, and intended to be dynamic in the way the people of the Town experienced it.”

There was quite a buzz in the room, and many members of the public attended, though it would have been gratifying to see more there. At times there were almost as many members of the public as volunteers. People talked to each other in a way that has not happened before at such meetings.

Refreshments were provided throughout the evening and members of the Guides served canapes. It is perhaps an indication of the nature of the event that one of the Guides (Lilia Kayani photo above) turned out to be an award winner.

Nailsworth Town Council Report

The Mayor, Cllr Jonathan Duckworth, started the proceedings by announcing that the Town Crier, Tony Evans, was now in his 25th year of service and invited the meeting to show their appreciation.

The Mayor then spoke to the Town Council Annual Report, outlining that the main aims of the Town Council in the last year. This had been to review staffing and administration, make the Town Council more accessible to the public, and overhaul the finances of the Council. These had been achieved.

Copies of the Report are available from the Town Hall and Town Information Centre and also the Town Council website

www.nailsworthtowncouncil.gov.ukwhere you can also see a timelapse

video of the event. Well worth a look.

Pete Reed OBE – Nailsworth’s OlympianPete (right) attended the meeting, with his medals, and presented the Mayor’s Awards to

the recipients. He also announced that after discussion with the Mayor, a new award was being set up.

Pete wants to put something back into Nailsworth, which has supported him so strongly through his own sporting endeavours, and gave him such a wonderful childhood.

He said there was something special about Nailsworth. The new award is for somebody whose life has changed dramatically through sport. This is not about achieving excellence, but about people achieving something through sport.

Nominations will be sought from residents of Nailsworth for the next Town Meeting in 2018.

Nailsworth’s Young Persons Award

The winner of this award is Lilia Kayani, who has been raising money for conservation

and community work in Borneo. Lilia has held many fund-raising events,

including Christmas Fairs, a Barn Dance, Discos and a Easter Trail hunt.

The fund-raising target was £4,500 and she has now raised most of that target for work in Borneo.

Lilia is a member of Girl Guiding Nailsworth Valley

District, and her work has been part of their outreach work in Borneo.

Nailsworth Festival Arts

AwardThe winners of this year’s

award are the WI (Women’s Institute) and all those who have contributed to the yarn-bombing Poppies on the War Memorial.

The person who instigated this project was Sue Wales, and she collected the award on behalf of the WI.

What caught the Mayor’s imagination here is the way a simple idea could be carried out in the community and then put together to make a very striking and moving impact. They have plans for a more ambitious project with the poppies.

What is it with the littering Nailsworth people or its visitors? Not only do we have unsightly detritus up and down the town and it’s surrounds, but we seem to have an excess of loo seats. The etiquette of ‘privy seat up-or-down’ doesn’t enter the equation since they are found each year with, and often without, the carefully designed addition.

Putting that particular peculiarity aside and the mystery of the khazi-cast-offs, we are fortunate to have the annual orchestrated ‘Clean Up’. April saw the Rotary Club in harmonized action with the much appreciated event; supported with enthusiastic, skilled-rubber-gloved volunteers to reach the places that the Council can’t.

Each year the volunteers collect a vast amount of rubbish which the minority deem fit to blight our town with.

April’s clean up volunteer Ros John supplied this photograph of Don Luke (bog seat in place) and Steve Hooper.

Ros advises that they had a go at clearing some of the accumulated rubbish chucked over the banks below Pensile Road, “a job almost needing crampons and ropes!”

In all seriousness, it is a sad truth that this clean up is necessary. We humbly thank the organisers and the volunteers who make this event successful for a litter free (or litter-reduced) town.

Congratulations to Elsie Heslop!Elsie, who

writes regularly for the NN in her role as an FGR Ambassador, has just been awarded Secondary School Ambassador of the Year 2017.

This is because of all her efforts over the past year helping to promote all things to do with the Club.

Elsie’s recent Q&A article with Phil Butterworth was so well liked by FGR that it was also printed in their literature.

We hope she will continue to write for us next season - exciting times ahead!

A message of thanks for help in time of needJan Cohen of Watledge has contacted NN to pass on her thanks for the

enormous help she has received in the last two months in walking her little dog ‘Teddy’.

Two months ago Jan had a knee operation and during her recuperation Teddy has been walked regularly by a rota of helpers. This has included her family, neighbours and friends; particularly the friends she has made while walking Teddy before she had the operation.

This is the sort of situation faced by many elderly people with their pets, which is why we thought we should publicise also the great help Jan has received from the Cinnamon Trust, a national Charity for the elderly and their pets.

Cinnamon Trust has volunteers in Nailsworth, and their volunteers are also helping in walking Teddy.

Jan told us that all the help she has received has been amazing and done with such wonderful friendship and care. She also said, “I must say that Teddy has certainly lost a fair bit of weight and thoroughly enjoyed himself with all the extra walking. Many, many thanks to everybody who helped.”

We thought readers would like to know more about the Cinnamon Trust, so we intend to include a more detailed account of the Charity’s work and something about their local volunteers in a future issue.

The Charity helps elderly people with their pets, and this includes cats as well as dogs.

For more information look at the Charity’s very good web site: www.cinnamon.org.uk / 01736 757 900

Quiz Night. There is also a quiz night on Sat 6 May 17 at the Comrades Club. Teams of 4 (£10 a team) are invited to take part in a fun (and challenging) event with suitable prizes for the winners!!

The Royal British Legion (Forest Green/Nailsworth Branch) holds its meetings on the third Thursday of each month at the Social Club in Brewery Lane. RSPCA Charity ChatterA very strange thing happened in the

shop today. Coincidence or fate, who knows?

A few weeks ago a vintage dog nightdress case was donated and was kept on a shelf awaiting a little research as it bore no label or clue to its make.

More recently we took possession of a wicker basket-cum-pushchair which I thought would make an interesting window display. After failing to find a suitable old fashioned doll to complete the arrangement I remembered the rather tired dog on the shelf and it fitted the chair perfectly and took pride of place in our toy window display.

Imagine our surprise when a rather shocked lady came into the shop this morning saying she had just seen the old dog nightdress case in the window and that she owns one exactly the same. She was given hers when a baby in the 1950’s by an aunt and it sits in

a corner of her sitting room; it has been kept on display for all these years and survived five house moves.

She recognised the eyes, brass zip, and although in quite a threadbare condition, it was definitely the same make. She left the shop only to return a short while later having decided to buy the dog as it was such a coincidence to have discovered another.

How delighted were we when she returned this afternoon with a

carrier bag containing both vintage dogs - her own one named Sable wearing her old cat’s collar, and her new acquisition!

You just never know what you will find in a charity shop . . . Kathryn at -

Wayside Cross 100 Years on

As featured in a recent NN, you will remember the article about the Wayside Cross at Woodchester which is 100 years old this year.

Woodchester is planning a grand affair to celebrate its Centenary and is asking for anyone related to any of the 140 soldiers, sailors and airmen commemorated on the Cross to get in contact. Part of the ceremony will be the laying

of flowers on the monument by local children and also by the present day descendants of the names honoured on the Cross.

Phil Goodwin says, “We would like to hear from you so you can be invited to the service which is planned for the Centenary on the 10th June 2017. Many relations of the soldiers were present at the original ceremony and it would be wonderful if 100 years later relatives were also at the Cross to remember the dead.”

Please contact Phil Goodwin for more information and to register your interest - [email protected]

The photo above is of the original dedication ceremony taken on June 3rd 1917.

NigglesworthWith all the efforts by local traders in

Market Street to improve the area and bring people into town, what a pity that the eyesore around the old video shop area continues to be a major blot on the landscape.

Can’t the ‘powers that be’ at NTC and District level force a positive outcome after years and years of pussy-footing about?

The Vegan Festival of Britain comes to

Nailsworth!Nailsworth’s shops, cafés and

restaurants will be taking part in a national celebration of cruelty-free food and living as part of Animal Aid’s National Vegan Festival of Britain on 20th May -10th June.

www.veganfestivalofbritain.org.uk.Veganism is about living with

respect for all life and seeking to extend the circle of compassion and care to all living creatures. There are over half a million vegans in the UK – three and a half times as many as there were in 2006, making it perhaps the fastest growing lifestyle movement. It is now well known that adopting a plant-based diet significantly reduces an individual’s carbon footprint. Nailsworth’s Climate Action Group is tackling climate change at a local level, and eliminating, or at least reducing, consumption of meat and dairy could be a key part of this strategy. There is also well documented evidence of the health benefits of the vegan diet.

Nailsworth is, of course, well placed to take part in the Vegan Festival, being home to the only vegan football club in the country - Forest Green Rovers – and to Asparagasm, the ground-breaking gluten-free/vegan café/restaurant. Those seeking a cruelty-free, healthy and ecologically sustainable way of living are well catered for locally,

as most of Nailsworth’s cafés and restaurants cater for vegan diets. The Olive Tree has an extensive vegan menu and Wild Garlic and the Ruskin Mill café are very happy to offer vegan dishes. Our shops provide an ever-increasing range of healthy, plant based foods, plus a range of cruelty-free toiletries and cosmetics.

During the Festival period, local outlets such as Green Spirit, Shiny Goodness, the Co-op supermarket and Horsley Community Shop will be highlighting their vegan

and cruelty-free products, whilst the Yellow-Lighted Bookshop will have a window display of vegan cookbooks and guides to ethical living.

To celebrate all this, and to support those who are interested in discovering more about the ethical, ecological and health benefits of plant-based diets, local members of the Gloucestershire Vegans group will host a stall at Nailsworth Market on Saturday 27th May, from 9am to 1pm. Drop by for free samples of delicious vegan goodies - courtesy of Asparagasm and others - plus a wealth of information, tempting recipes, and details of where vegan products can be purchased in the town.

For more information on the Festival, please contact -

When?Mrs. Jones, a resident of Windsoredge, was a

little alarmed at the recent notice advising her of a three day road closure.

She commented, “Looks like we get an extra day this year. Does that make me even older?”

We feared that the road would also be closed on 32nd and 33rd of April and we tried to put it in our calendars, but we just couldn’t fit it in.

Maybe Severn Trent planned to walk their unicorns at Windsoredge on those days. If you sighted any, please get in touch.[Ed Note - we believe that ST have re-stabled their unicorns and have amended the notice of date to later in May.]

Forest Green Rovers somehow ‘got it right on the night’ and in the end gained a Play-Off slot for a chance at the Wembley showdown in May and a possible move to the Football League.

It was far from a comfortable month - a disastrous performance at home to bottom of the table North Ferriby did not bode well for the final games. The collapse at Lincoln seemed to be the end and the signs were ominous. Lame

excuses were banded about as to what was going

wrong, but players should not need cajoling at this stage when they know exactly what is on offer. Perhaps the constant change of personal for matches hasn’t helped create a settled outfit. Players seemed to lack the “fire in the stomach” feeling and do or die stuff! The football

has been laboured and oppositions have found it not too hard to defend such has been FGR’s slow build-up in the attacking third. It has certainly worried the faithful in the stands!

A fabulous away win at Tranmere seemed just the boost the team needed and a big crowd on Good Friday saw FGR near its best for the first time at home this season! Five shots hit the woodwork, attack after attack was made and it could well have been more than just a two goal win. It is what the fans like to see - if it doesn’t pay off, then fine - at least the players have had a real go!

But … a defeat to relegated Southport just now and all seems to be back to the drawing board and ‘what plan now?’ Another lack lustre performance and hardly a shot on goal in the 90 minutes.

Perhaps the players and management really are not up to the demands of the higher league?

Now the Play-Offs … a real lottery, but FGR has been there, done that and so on, so we hope the experience and a capacity home crowd in the semi-final will be just the tonic to finish the season on a high.

Shortwood UtdOverheard recently from the

stands: “Who is that red eight?”“Jack Freeman - powerful,

skilful and a natural vision when passing the ball - he’ll go far.”

And so it came to pass (sorry for the pun!). Jack has just won the Gloucestershire FA U18 Player of the Year Award and fully justified it is too. Jack is the result of last year’s successful FGR Academy outfit and he has been coached well! He has been a regular in the Shortwood 1st and Reserve teams and shone on many occasions. No doubt, he will be scouted by many in the months ahead after this award but at 17 he still has some bit to do, but then Michael Owen and others were youth stars!

As for the season as a whole, it has been massively

disappointing - a really bright start under new manager Alex Sykes faltered and by Christmas it seemed to be going all wrong. Silly defeats, erratic performances culminating with six defeats on the trot saw the departure of Sykes. Something had to be done - at least there was nothing to lose on the pitch.

Shortwood had wallowed now in mid-table for half the season and had it not been for the good results in the early days, the club would have been in a relegation dog-fight.

The season is now over - new and younger players will come in led by a new coach and it will all start again. Who knows what the new season will bring? It can’t be anyway as disappointing as the last one!

Nailsworth Mills Bowling Club began the 2017 season with what must be the earliest first outdoor game in its history. Prior to the 28th April opening of our own Green, a team set off to Bristol Arrow club two weeks before and happily came away having won the game by 12 shots.

Existing members, prospective members and total beginners are all welcome at the Green on Friday Club nights from 6.15pm to se what

the game is all about. The Club is easy to

find on the Chamberlain’s Estate (just before Nailsworth Wyevale) thanks to its new sign.

Everyone is welcome to try your hand at Bowls. We run Public Taster Sessions at our Club Night every Friday evening, starting on

12th May, throughout the summer. These are from 6.30 - 9.30 when coaching will be available.

Just pop along, please wear flat shoes, and meet the club members; learn what the game is about and stay to socialise at the licensed club bar. Once you become a member you can take part in club competitions and/or league games or just play socially. The Green is available most days of the week during the summer months and the Clubhouse bar is open for every home game and on Tuesday and Friday evenings.

In addition this year we will be holding the following Open Days:

Monday 24th April - we will be hosting an information stand at the Nailsworth Town Meeting at Nailsworth Town Hall so you can find out that Bowls really is a sport you would like to try.

Nailsworth Phoenix Table Tennis Club flies even higher this year …

After a successful league campaign for most of our teams the young “F team” stood out as they won Division 3 outright, but at the recent finals and presentation night at Deer Park School they were only one of many Phoenix successes. Phoenix senior players Dave Hadley and Liwu Wei won the Open Doubles but not content with one trophy, Liwu went on to win the Veterans Final and also the Open Singles Final.

Other awards presented to Phoenix players on the night: Sam McIvor (photograph right) won the u13 Boys Final, and was runner up in the u18 Doubles with Jon Ramsbotham, Sam also collected the “Don Sweeney Shield” and the “Michael Holbrow Award”. As well as the doubles, Jon was also runner- up in the u13 and u15 Boys and was part of the promoted “F” team along with Sam, Alex Wei and Andy Hammond.

Another junior, Fred Donald, collected an award as the Singles champion in Div 4.

The A Team had reached the Final of the Albert Mann Cup but unfortunately the team of Laurence Manley, Rich Cole and Dave Hadley came runners up to Frampton in the final played at Nailsworth Youth Club.

We are always looking for new players to come and join us at whatever level. If you do want to

come along please do but check with our Facebook page for practise nights. Or better still, give me a ring for all the information you need. We offer facilities to play socially, but also the chance to play more competitively in the League if you wish. Your first session is Free and refreshments are included.

We look forward to seeing you. Please contact Andy Hammond

FGR Academy Well done to Tom Anderson and Jordan

Stevens in their recent call-up to the England Colleges squad and both played v Wales! Tom now plays regularly for Weston-Super-Mare and is a key member of their fight for better things at the lower end of the table. Jordan is a first year student with the Academy and is a fast, skilful and stylish midfield/attacker and has a natural gift with the ball. Pictured: Tom Anderson and Jordan Stevens.

Meanwhile, in the league things have not been so positive - the loss of Gabbiadini with a nasty injury meant that the main striker with dozens of goals was now out for the season. Goals and forward prowess

was drying up, but the team has adapted well and finds itself in the Gary Else Memorial Cup Final v Poole again! Last year’s epic

final win cannot be repeated can it? Retaining the league championship will be a tall order now, but the team has shaped up well and next year with a number of 2nd Year players, it will again be a force to be reckoned with.
