Dear Parents and Caregivers, Early Dismissal Friday 6th July at 2:05pm On the last day of every school term, school is dismissed one hour earlier. As this Friday, 6th July, is the last day of Term 2, school will be dismissed at 2:05pm. Assuming the weather is fine, the traditional count down assembly will be held from 1:50pm. Casual Day Thursday 5th July The SRC are holding a casual day on this coming Thursday 5th July. For a gold coin donation students can wear casual clothes to raise funds for the charity chosen by the SRC members. For this casual day it is Story Dogs. At last Friday’s assembly we welcomed the South Australian coordinator of the program with two of the Story Dogs. Story Dogs was recently highlighted on national television and operates in a number of South Australian schools. It aims to create an environment where reluctant readers read to one of the story dogs on a regular basis. Both parties gain a great benefit from this experience. Student Reports On Thursday, students will be bringing home a report that outlines their progress to the end of Semester One, the mid way point of the school year. As per a requirement of the Australian Government, each student’s standard of work from Year 1 to Year 7 will be assessed against the outcomes outlined in the Australian Curriculum and recorded as either: Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Partial or Minimal. To assist in understanding the criteria for the standards, the following table of information is provided. (see right) Please note: If your child’s progress is recorded as satisfactory, they are working at the expected standard for their year level. The standard of a child’s work also needs to be considered in conjunction with the effort description that the teacher has observed in their learning. As a parent we may hope our child shines in all areas of academics, sporting and social endeavours, however, life experience would inform us that we all have strengths and areas where we can improve. 2019 Student Enrolment Reminder

SRC News

If you have a child starting school in 2019 at Nailsworth Primary School, please speak to Anita at the Front Office. Thank you.

The SRC and NPS staff have been searching for random acts of kindness in the school yard. If you are seen showing kindness your name and class will be written on a green paper leaf which will be added to the paper tree in the office. We have loved seeing the tree grow daily. The SRC would like to thank everyone who has shown kindness to someone throughout this term, whether or not your name appeared on the tree. We would also like to encourage everyone to continue to show kindness throughout the holidays regardless of who is watching. At Friday’s assembly we will be honouring the student whose name appears most frequently on the tree. On the 5th of July we are having a casual day to raise funds for Story Dogs, an Australian literacy program that was built around the idea of children reading to dogs. Its mission is to improve children’s reading skills, writing skills and communication skills in a comfortable environment. Leah Sheldon and Janine Sigley began the non-profit organisation in 2009 in a NSW school. To the surprise of many, Story Dogs was very successful and great improvement was seen in the participating students. From there, Story Dogs expanded and has continued to grow and help all of Australia. In South Australia there are 3 story dog teams - in Whyalla, Mount Gambier and Adelaide. Natalie Bubner, the coordinator of Story dogs in Adelaide, visited NPS at the Week 9 assembly to share the work Story Dogs are doing as well as to introduce two story dogs, Secret and Miss Fergie. The SRC are excited to help this organisation, which is run solely by volunteers. Please support them too by wearing casual and bringing a gold coin donation on Thursday 5th July. This term in Music students from Room 17 have been learning about rhythmic patterns. They began by exploring set patterns through clapping and stomping their feet.Following this they applied some hard thinking around developing their own combinations to fit in 3/4 time. Working in small groups the students tested their patterns using tapping sticks (claves).During this time the students also learnt the song ‘Mumma Warruno’ an Indigenous Australian lullaby. At last week’s assembly the students celebrated their learning and understanding by proudly performing this song together with the tapping sticks.Great work Room 17. A big thank you to Miss Raylene for her support and encouragement throughout the term.Maria Daniells, Foundation/Music [email protected]

On June 4, four of our Year 7 students (Sahti L, Aidan V, James H & Anna T) along with Mr Crampsas were invited to the ABC Studios to celebrate Behind the News’ 50th year of on air broadcasting. We were the first school to arrive, and while we waited for the other schools, we were introduced to some of the backstage producers. Once all the other schools arrived, we entered a room with everyone to watch a short documentary about the history of BTN. Did you know that BTN was originally called ‘Current Affairs’? Amelia Mosely, who is the current host of BTN, interviewed the very first BTN producer, Ann Whitehead, along with the current producer, Sarah Larsen. She also interviewed Paul Higgins who was a host from the 1980s.After listening to the interviews we all got up and entered the ‘party’

room to sing Happy Birthday and popped confetti poppers. They then served us a birthday lunch with lots of food to be had by all.We took some photos with Amelia and some of the other presenters in a photo booth with some props which was a lot of fun!All in all we had a fun time at the ABC Studios celebrating BTN’s 50th birthday and we hope to see BTN continuing for a long time.By Sahti, Aidan, James and Anna Tony Crampsas, Year 7 Teacher [email protected]

Crow’s Cup Success

On the 22nd June, the boys’ and girls’ 9-a-side football teams travelled to St Dominic’s Oval to compete in the Crow’s Cup 9-a-side Football Carnival. Both teams competed in a round robin and finals series that was made up of over 20 different schools. Both the girls and boys teams made a fantastic start to the tournament, remaining undefeated through the minor rounds. The boys managed to grind out a number of close wins through the finals series, going on to win the Grand Final against Mawson Lakes. The girls had their first and only loss of the tournament in the 2nd Semi-Final, going down by 1 goal in a nail biter against Walkerville A. The girls redeemed themselves in the playoff for third place, defeating Walkerville B in another close encounter. A big thanks to Mrs Ralph and Angus Ralph for coaching the girls’ team; the Wareing, Mills and Turner families for scoring and goal umpiring; Kylie Baxter for being the First Aid Officer; and all of the families and friends who came out to support our students at the carnival. It was a lot of fun and a great success! Boys’ team (pictured right):
