New York’s Motto

The State of New York adopted "Excelsior!" as its motto and embedded it into the state seal (which is duplicated on the

state flag). The seal depicts the goddesses, Liberty and Justice, with a seal of exploration between them, an eagle of freedom above them, and the declaration of "Excelsior!" beneath their feet. It is interesting to note the placement

of the motto, at the bottom of the seal, where it has nowhere to go but up.
