GOAT’S MILK IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH IN DARFUR

“The thought of how mothers must feel as they face each day, knowing they cannot feed their children properly, if at all, haunts me” Patricia Parker MBE, Founder Kids for Kids.

Kids for Kids was founded in 2001 because of one small boy’s seven hour walk for water across the deserts of Darfur. Children face total deprivation in the villages - there is no infrastructure, no health care, not even roads. Water is a daily struggle. Clean water is a dream. When Patricia met little Ibrahim on his walk for water, she knew she had to help.

Today, Kids for Kids is transforming the lives of children in 70 villages. Simple grassroots projects lift individual families, and whole communities, out of abject poverty, giving them the chance to improve their own lives. Villagers tell us what will help and we teach them how to run the projects themselves to ensure they last. Every project is sustainable, and run by the villagers themselves.

Just one cup a day of goat’s milk will transform a child’s health.

Key project is a Goat Loan - six goats are lent to a family for two years. The family builds up a little flock, then passes on six to another poor family. Every two years the loan is repeat-ed. “This is the best investment anyone could ever make” says Patricia “We know the names of every beneficiary and we keep track of families. It is touching to see what the difference just a little help makes to a mother who has nothing, not even hope.”

We train midwives and first aid workers, because without health care simple problems become catastrophes. People need farm tools if they are to grow enough for their children. Our donkey ploughs mean that people can cultivate more land. We plant trees to prevent further desertification, and for fruit and shade, important in the overpowering heat. Our donkeys provide transport. Our latrines are the first villagers have seen. It is the combination of these projects that makes the difference. Most important of all is water. Our aim is fresh clean water in every village.

Education during the early years can change a child’s life. 98% of women in Darfur are illiterate: they beg us to help educate their children. We want to build a kindergarten in every village, but we need your help. But first they must have water.
