Letter From theBoard President

Having been the chair of Men CanStop Rape’s board of directors forthe past two years and a boardmember for three years, I have hadthe pleasure of observing theorganization’s progress over time.Year after year, it is thrilling to seethe impact of our work growingnationally and internationally. Thisyear is no different; theorganization continues to becomelarger and stronger across multipledimensions. All the while, ourcommitment to providing youngmen with an alternative vision ofstrength and nonviolence hasremained constant, as has our

focus on and appreciation for thefamily of supporters, collaborators,and allies that make our workpossible.This past year, the importance offamily was highlighted by severalnew local funders, including TheMoran Family Foundation and ananonymous Virginia-based familyfoundation. The support of thesefunders, along with long-timedonors such as the Mead FamilyFoundation, indicates that familiesvalue our work and see theimportance of funding its growth.Our programs also embraced afamily theme. The Men of Strength(MOST) Club placed a focus oninvolving parents and guardians inour work by inviting them to openClub meetings and engaging themin Community Strength Projects.The young men who participate inthe MOST Club, as well as theirfamilies, embody the counterstory.They are change agents for theentire community, enabling ourmessage of nonviolence andgender equity to take root.

Finally, without the staff, board,volunteers, and supporters – theorganizational family of Men CanStop Rape – none of this workwould be possible. Our sharedvalues and commitment to socialchange bind us together andsupport the collective effort tobuild stronger, peaceful, andhealthier communities. Letter from theExecutive Director

In our evaluation work over the pastthree years with the U. S. Centers forDisease Control and Prevention(CDC), we have frequently heardstories of people around thecountry urgently seeking evidence-based programming that engagesyoung men in ending men’sviolence against women. To meetthis pressing need, the CDC initiateda project evaluating four primaryprevention programs – one of themMen Can Stop Rape’s Men ofStrength (MOST) Club – focused onstopping first-time perpetration ofsexual assault by male youth. Stronginitial results led the CDC to

describe the Club as a promisingstrategy and fueled their interest inits replication and continuedevaluation. This has been a successful year ofreplication and expansion. Webegan by asking, can weimplement our programs that havebeen so effective in DC throughoutthe U. S. and even internationally?The answer was a resounding yes.With the CDC’s support and theefforts of a valuable ally, theCalifornia Coalition Against SexualAssault (CALCASA), we launchedour Men of Strength Club in a widevariety of settings across California,from urban multicultural to ruralwhite to rural Spanish-speakingcommunities. Early results areexciting. We were confident thatour approach to mobilizing youngmen would have broad appeal,and this trial run outside our homebase has been gratifying and re-energizing as we begin to look foradditional partnerships elsewhere.Expansion was not limited to theMOST Club. Along with establishingClubs in California, CALCASAlaunched the largest media effortof its kind using our StrengthMediaworks materials. Posters,

billboards, animated movie ads,and a host of other publiceducation media inspired youngmen around the state to declare"My Strength is Not for Hurting."Licensed Mediaworks materials alsohelped to mobilize men in Nevadaand – most exciting – in SouthAfrica. Seeing our messages inEnglish, isiXhosa, and Afrikaansallowed us to imagine a new worldof possibilities, and a whole world ofyoung men empowered to createsafer and healthier manhoods andcommunities.Expansion is vital to Men Can StopRape’s continued success, butequally critical is continuing to workand struggle and celebrate in ourown back yard. Washington, DC isour home and the incubator for ourideas. We have no strongerevidence of this than the amazinggrowth of Community StrengthProjects (CSPs). From enduringfavorite CSPs like 30 Days ofStrength and the Strong WordsEssay Contest to new projects likeSolutions through Film and BuildingCommunity Strength Day, more DCMen of Strength Club membersthan ever before translatedcurriculum lessons into publicaction, uniting a wide cross-section

of students, parents, educators,administrators, business leaders,and interested citizens. With all our exciting news and all ofour progress, we still know – possiblymore than you can imagine – thatwe rely on your support andencouragement to find the strengthto stretch our limits. We may be theones who reap the benefits whenthe young men we work with boldlytake steps into the new world theyare creating, when we see themkeep coming back to seek andgive guidance, and when we heartheir stories of success. Individual stories – that’s whatinspires the Community EducationDepartment to do its job. Youngmen in our Men of Strength (MOST)Clubs share their struggles andsuccesses every day. Knowing thatthere are thousands more youngmen who don’t have a MOST Clubto connect to – that’s what drivesus to break new ground. And thispast year a great deal of newground was broken.

The MOST Club provides maleyouth with a forum for exploringmen’s role in preventing gender-based violence. In safe, structured,and supportive multi-club sessions,members connect with their malepeers by examining the waystraditional masculinity contributesto violence against women, andby developing healthier,nonviolent models of manhood.The Club is represented by theDwen Ninmen, a Ghanian symbolmeaning strength, wisdom,humility, and learning. Since itslaunch in 2000, the MOST Club hasbecome the premier primaryprevention program for youngmen in the country. During the 2005-2006 program yearthe Men of Strength Clubexpanded for the first time everoutside its locale of origin toCalifornia. The CommunityEducation Department alsocontinued to deepen our work inWashington, DC, prioritizing ourcommitment to many old and newcommunity partners. And DC MOSTClub members took to heart apopular adage of our CommunityStrength Projects (CSPs), Be Bold,Be Strong, Take Action, bydramatically increasing the

number of CSPs they implementedthroughout the year. Expanding NationallyDuring the summer of 2005, theCalifornia Coalition Against SexualAssault started looking for a modelprogram focused on preventingfirst-time perpetration of sexualassault by male youth. After anintensive search, theyenthusiastically chose MCSR’s Menof Strength Club for its proventrack record and its commitmentto meeting young men where theyare – a central principle of ourwork, which allowed MOST Clubsto be established in California'sdiverse multicultural urban, ruralEnglish-speaking, and ruralSpanish-speaking communities.Starting in September 2005, sixCalifornia rape crisis centersestablished MOST Clubs at theirarea high schools, providing theiryoung men with opportunities totake leadership roles in sexualviolence prevention. These newsites and the five veteranWashington, DC Club locationsrepresented more Clubs runningduring a program year than at anyother time in MCSR’s history.

Staying Strong LocallyPleased to have the trust andsupport of many institutions andorganizations here in Washington,DC, the Community Education staffcontinued its commitment to anumber of long-standingcommunity partners. For the fifthyear in a row we were honored toparticipate in the United MethodistSeminar Program. Methodists fromacross the country travel toWashington DC to strengthen theirspiritual and social developmentthrough custom-designed seminarsthat address a variety of socialjustice issues, including gender-based violence. We also spoke ata number of events at DC-areacolleges, including HowardUniversity’s “DV in DC”Conference, American University’s“Women in Politics Institute,”George Washington University’sTake Back the Night, and the“Visions in Feminism Conference”at the University of Maryland,College Park.One of the primary goals everyyear is to deepen our work in ourDC veteran Men of Strength Clubsites and communities. Over thelast six years, the Men of Strength

Club has continued to evolve,serving as a valuable resource forthe young men in our city. Moreand more, though – especially thispast year – the reverse has alsobecome true: the young men inthe MOST Club are now serving asa valuable resource for theirschools and communities. Becausemembers wanted to be moreinvolved, wanted to take moreaction, the number of CommunityStrength Projects implementedmore than doubled, jumping fromthree the previous year to seven.

Young Men inWashington, DC,Taking Action

COMMUNITY STRENGTHPROJECTS (CSPs)CSPs help young men translatetheir increased awareness andlearning into communityleadership, positive action, andsocial change. Driven by thecreativity of youth and facilitatedby MCSR staff, each CSP strives to

prevent men’s violence byemphasizing alternative models ofmale strength that illustrate howmen can be strong without beingviolent. Using their strength to buildup their communities and inspirethe best in others to createenvironments that are free ofmen’s violence against women,MOST Club members wereinstrumental in the growth of aseries of successful and expandedCSPs.

My Sister’s Place Rally againstDomestic Violence My Sister's Place, a Washington, DCshelter for battered women andtheir children, is committed toeradicating domestic violence.Every October, Domestic ViolenceAwareness Month, they launch acity-wide public awarenesscampaign in collaboration withother gender-violence preventionadvocates. During the campaign’s2005 candlelight vigil, two MOSTClub members, Rafael Suarez andWilliam Patterson, shared themessage that young men can bestrong without being violent in theirschools and communities.

Black History Month FilmFestivalOn February 4, 2006, over 100people attended the 4th AnnualBlack History Month Film Festival,“Solutions Through Film” hosted byall DC locations of the MOST Cluband members of the MOST ClubAdvisory Board. Held at theprestigious American Film Institute’sSilver Theater, the event recognizedthe contributions and challenges ofthe African-American experienceboth past and present by featuringtwo films. The Academy Awardnominated documentary, 4 LittleGirls, produced by Spike Lee, looksat the terrorist bombing of aSouthern Baptist church in the1960s. Letter to the President, adocumentary produced by QD3Entertainment, highlights theconnections of rap and hip-hopmusic to the cultural context andpolitical policies of the UnitedStates. The films sparked valuablediscussion across the generationsand genders, everyone criticallyexamining the complex issuesraised and their connections tojustice and equity.

Barry Farms Field Clean-upwith D.C. UnitedMOST Club members, facilitators,and community volunteers, inpartnership with D.C. United, spentthe day cleaning a field in theBarry Farms neighborhood onMarch 25, 2006 in order to make itplayable for a D.C. United youthsoccer league. The field was in direshape, scattered with bottles, cans,broken glass, and food wrappers,as well as a significant amount ofpaper waste. As with many of ourCommunity Strength Projects,members traveled from all over thecity to Anacostia to participate inthe cleanup. MOST Club membersfilled 15 garbage bags by the endof the day. To follow through onefforts to make the field playable,we had veteran School WithoutWalls soccer players and MOSTClub members intern with D.C.United to help facilitate the youthsoccer clinics.

Digital Video Conference withCalifornia ClubsOn April 7, 2006, MOST Clubmembers in Washington, DCparticipated in a Digital VideoConference with fellow members inCalifornia. It was a first-timemeeting, yet the conversations thatfollowed sounded like talk amongold friends. Eager to learn moreabout each other, young men onboth sides unreservedly askedquestions. Members learned aboutlife on opposite coasts, especiallythat there were more similaritiesthan differences. The conversationleft many members searching for away to stay connected and unified.

Building CommunityStrength DayClub members from all over thecity spent April 8, 2006 volunteeringat Hannah House, the onlytransitional facility for homelesswomen and their children in theDC area. MOST Club members,facilitators, and communityvolunteers spent the day cleaningthe carpets of both homes ofHannah House with steam

machines and cleaning solutiongenerously donated by HomeDepot. After finishing the carpets,some of the more technologicallygifted members took time tonetwork and organize thecomputer lab. By the end of theday, the carpets were clean andthe computers were running betterthan ever.

MOST Club and SisterAction Sister StrengthPartnershipMembers of the DC Rape CrisisCenter’s program for young womenat School Without Walls, SisterAction Sister Strength, paired withmembers of the school’s Men ofStrength Club during April, SexualAssault Awareness Month, toconduct workshops on date rapeand sexual assault. Students in every10th grade homeroom not onlylearned about preventing sexualviolence, they saw role modeledhow men and women can worktogether as allies to preventviolence against women and girls.

Strong Words Essay ContestD.C. United and United for D.C.MOST Club and Men Can StopRape recognize that literacy playsan important role in preventingmen’s violence against women.During March 2006, the Men ofStrength Club held its 3rd AnnualStrong Words Essay Contestsponsored by D.C. United andUnited for D.C. The contest wasopen to 15 DC Public High Schoolsand Charter Schools. The contestasked students to elaborate ontheir interpretation of the AudreLorde quote, “Your silence will notprotect you.” Ms. Carrie Smith,Chair of the AP English Departmentat Hyde Leadership Public CharterSchool, required every AP Englishstudent in the school to enter thecontest, which led to the victory of11th Grade Hyde student, CasheaBlyden. She was the third Hydestudent in a row to win thiscontest.

Interview SnapshotPatrick Lincoln, MCSR’s Consulting andTraining Director, interviewed AmandaSantos about her participation in theJuly Washington, DC Strength Training.Patrick: What was the most valuableaspect of the Strength Training for you?Amanda: I think for others networkingwas huge. For me, I got to understandthe organization more and see whatthe MOST Clubs were really like.Patrick: What exercise was the mostvaluable?Amanda: The Real Man exercise helpspeople come to a level where youngmen are, and you’re using pop cultureto talk about masculinity. TheContinuum shows you that thecomponents of rape culture arecomplex and there’s no definitiveanswer to how we should talk aboutthem. The point is the dialogue.Patrick: Any final comment you’d like toshare about the training overall?Amanda: Everything was really wellthought out and flowed togethernicely. The facilitation was fabulous andconversations always went in the rightdirection. There was a great amount ofcamaraderie; it seemed like everyonewanted to continue talking. It’sempowering to connect with otherswith similar passions.

CONNECTINGWITH THE RESTOF THECOUNTRY

Patrick Lincoln’s Trip toIndiana University ofPennsylvaniaI started at Men Can Stop Rape onJanuary 2nd, 2006, and twelvedays later co-facilitated a three-day training with the ExecutiveDirector, Patrick Lemmon, atIndiana University of Pennsylvania(IUP). Needless to say, I wasnervous. I had become relativelyconfident with the basic materialfrom conducting a three-dayStrength Training in DC January 6-8,attended by people from aroundthe country, but I knew the IUPexperience would prove verydifferent. These students wouldknow each other from working andinteracting together on theircampus, so in addition to sharingour theory and modeling many of

our activities and exercises, wewould need to pay attention tohow they could effectively worktogether in the future.Driving to Pennsylvania on January13th gave me ample time to chatwith one of the co-founders of theorganization, and so with the inand outs of the history of Men CanStop Rape in mind, I began ourlong weekend together with adozen IUP student activists. I wouldcome to learn the details of mynew position much better than anywritten job description could detail. After two days of examiningdominant stories of masculinitythrough exercises reflecting onimages in pop culture and throughimprovised sketches representinghow traditional manhood is provenin our day-to-day lives, we movedon to discuss the counterstory. Webegan by identifying the strongestmen we know in our lives. Stories ofnurturing fathers, professors willingto say, “I don’t know,” and friendsovercoming difficulty, were shared,many for the first time. I wasamazed that asking people todefine strength by talking aboutmen they knew led to stories of

fathers, teachers, and friends whostand outside of the “real man”box that so often dictates men’sbehavior. This personalacknowledgement of alternativesto aggressive masculinity helps usfind better ways of owning andliving the counterstory. We also explored the counterstoryby brainstorming ways to puttheory into action. Small groupsspent almost the entire third dayplanning real changes that wouldtransform the culture supportingviolence against women on the IUPcampus. Suggestions ranged fromreforming the campus policy forresponding to student allegationsof sexual assault to making trainingon men’s violence against womena part of every first-year studentorientation. This experience at IUPmade clear to me the value ofspreading the counterstory tocommunities far and wide.

Countrywide Trainings andWorkshopsThe Department of Consulting andTraining was busy this year,traveling around the country andinternationally, discussing thedominant story of masculinity thatcan lead to violence and honoringthe counterstories of men findingthe strength to speak up, ally withyoung women, and act in waysthat build healthy communities.Everywhere we visited, our uniqueapproach to working with men wasintegrated into a presentation, anawareness-raising workshop, or anintensive training of up to threedays. Our Executive Director,Patrick Lemmon, presented at theAmnesty International Conferenceon Involving Men in the Movementto End Violence Against Women,traveling to England, Wales,Northern Ireland, and Scotland. Wetrained members of the CaliforniaCoalition Against Sexual Assault asa part of our landmark licensingagreement, and took part in theCenter for Disease Control’sRegional Sexual ViolencePrevention Training Institutes. Wespoke on the Masculinities Panel atthe “From Abortion Rights to SocialJustice” conference in Amherst,Massachusetts. We facilitated an

awareness-raising web and audioconference for the Family ViolencePrevention Fund, and didadditional trainings in places likeNorth Carolina, Virginia,Pennsylvania, and California. Alltold, we visited 5 countries, 10states, and conducted trainings orworkshops for more than 1000participants.

New Training CurriculaIn order to supplement our programexpansion with new contentdevelopment, we added exercisesto existing trainings and creatednew workshops. During ourtrainings, significant headway ismade by sharing our theory andpractice, and participants leavewith concrete tools they can use toengage men as allies in this work.However, this year we developedan interactive exercise thataddresses the famous last question,“What’s next?” “OrganizingStrength” is a community-buildingactivity that helps to establishconnections among people’sseemingly diverse and differentgoals. We have also found spiriteddialogue each time we bring upthe topic of rape and racism. Inaddition to incorporating morethought around this issue and how

it is presented, the Consulting andTraining Department, together withthe Communications Director, PatMcGann, has developed a newworkshop on racism, whiteness, andthe construction of safety oncollege campuses.

Our Washington, DCStrength Training Each year in January and July, weinvite youth-serving professionalsand student and communityeducators from the around theworld to experience our most in-depth training in Washington, DC.This year our Strength Trainingscontinued to build on their nine-year history of success. In July wehad participants from California,Alaska, Ohio, Virginia, Michigan,and the District. In January manyparticipants once again said thatthe experience was life-changing,and that finally they knew how towork with young men. The trainingalso served our mission ofdeepening our work by buildingrelationships that have sinceallowed us to do extensive workthroughout the state of New York.Each Strength Training participantwas truly able to leave with newknowledge and skills, making theirwork in diverse communities a

catalyst for the growth of thecounterstory to men’s violenceagainst women.

The MyStrength Campaign adopted MCSR'sconcepts and developed a wide rangeof materials including posters, billboards,mall ads, transit ads, movie theatertrailers, and banners for high schoolstadiums. We had tee-shirts, wrist bands,mini-footballs, key chains, messengerbags, water bottles, and even etchediPods. Pat: How have people in Californiaresponded to the My Strength mediamaterials?David: The media materials havestarted conversations throughout thestate. In Riverside, one family saw thematerials and found hope in them. Thedaughter had been recently raped andthe campaign served as support for thewhole family. Subsequently, the motherhas become an active volunteer withthe center there.

RAPE’S REACHAs California Goes, So TooGo the Country and WorldMen Can Stop Rape’s media andpublic-service-advertisingmessages took up residence onthe west coast when MCSR strucka five year licensing agreementwith the Cal ifornia CoalitionAgainst Sexual Assault (CALCASA)to adapt and launch MCSR’sStrength Campaign as the MyStrength Campaign throughouttheir state – the largest effort of itskind anywhere in the country.Never before has the presence ofso many different “My Strength IsNot for Hurting” media materialsbeen so pervasive andconcentrated within ageographical region the size ofCalifornia. This unprecedentedexpansion represents both thegrowth of our Strength Campaignand of MCSR’s media-consultationand design services. And that is theword that defines the work of theCommunications Department this

past year: growth. From Californiato South Africa, from the UnitedKingdom to universities across thecountry, Men Can Stop Rape’sefforts to communicate its positiveapproach to engaging young menin preventing violence againstwomen have led to unparalleledresults.

The Strength PackageThe Strength Campaign, initiallydefined by Men Can Stop Rape’smedia and PSA materials, has overtime grown into a comprehensive,multifaceted Campaign consistingof all of MCSR’s services. In order tomarket this now multi-componentinitiative, we created the StrengthPackage. Since its creation, the StrengthPackage has been distributed toSTOP Violence Against Womengrant administrators at their 2005annual meeting organized by theOffice of Violence Against Women,to attendees at the 2005 NationalSexual Assault Conference, and toparticipants at the 2005 NationalConference on Sexual Assault inOur Schools. More than 350 StrengthPackages were downloaded bywebsite visitors or sent through themail to people as far away as India,Nigeria, the Netherlands, Liberia,

Japan, and Australia. Closer tohome, almost 80 colleges in theU.S. requested the StrengthPackage.

Strength MediaworksStrength Mediaworks, media andPSA advertising, organized aroundthe theme line, "My Strength Is Notfor Hurting," emphasize how mencan be strong without usingintimidation, force, or violence toget what they want inrelationships. MCSR’s decision tomarket a comprehensive StrengthCampaign led to an increasedinterest in the supportive roleMediaworks can play in initiativesbeing implemented across thecountry and world.Licensing Agreements: After conducting an exhaustiveinvestigation of sexual assaultprimary prevention campaignstargeting high school age youngmen, CALCASA chose to licensethe Strength Campaign specificallybecause it offered a positive,integrated, comprehensiveapproach unlike any other. Themulti-media component of the MyStrength Campaign blanketed thecities and towns of the 66 rapecrisis centers across the state.Never before had such a vast

The five-yearlicensing agreement will ensurethat My Strength media materialswill continue to have a strongpresence in California.The Nevada Coalition AgainstSexual Assault joined CALCASA inusing Strength Mediaworks tosupport a statewide initiative, thelaunch of Nevada Men AgainstViolence (NMAV). As part ofNMAV’s kick-off events andactivities during 2006 Sexual AssaultAwareness Month, they displayedand gave away licensed StrengthMediaworks materials – a poster,banner, keychain, stick-on, as wellas designs for their brochure andwebsite – that were speciallybranded with the NMAV logo andcontact information.And finally, Strength Mediaworkstraveled far from home whenMCSR struck up a licensingagreement with EngenderHealthfor South African Men as PartnersNetwork and the Western CapeOffice on the Status of Women.Twelve posters, using South Africanmodels and rich pastels and earth

tones, were created for the SouthAfrican "16 Days of ActivismAgainst Gender Violence" – aworldwide campaign – that ranfrom International Day for theElimination of Violence AgainstWomen, November 25, throughInternational Human Rights Day,December 10. New MCSR Strength MediaworksPosters: In order to capitalize on theCALCASA My Strength posters’bold new look accentuating “MyStrength Is Not for Hurting,” MenCan Stop Rape created eight of itsown new posters based on thesame design. And for the first timesince the original posters wereproduced in 2001, we developednew messages. Two postersaddressed the role of alcohol usein sexual assault – “My strength isnot for hurting. So when she wasdrunk, I backed off” and “So whenI was drunk, I backed off.” A thirdposter addressed sexual assaultwithin a same-sex relationship –“My strength is not for hurting. Sowhen I wanted to and he didn’t,we didn’t.” The new posters entered themarket in March 2006 tooverwhelming popularity. 60% of

the posters purchased during theentire year were sold from March2006 to June 2006. And comparedto the same quarter in 2005, wesaw a 60% increase in sales. In all,more than 200 organizations,schools, and agencies displayedthe positive messages of StrengthMediaworks during FY2006.

Giving BackBecause not every individual andorganization has the capacity topurchase Mediaworks materials,Men Can Stop Rape has made acommitment to give back to themovement that has sustained itover so many years. This pastFebruary and March, in support ofthe V-Day College Campaigns,MCSR donated more than 450Strength Mediaworks posters tonine V-Day organizers inWashington, DC, Maryland, andVirginia. Members of the V-DayCollege Campaign present benefitproductions of "The VaginaMonologues” on their campuses orin their communities on or aroundV-Day (February 14th) to raiseawareness about violence againstwomen and girls.

In April 2006, during Sexual AssaultAwareness Month, MCSR launchedthe inaugural Start the School YearStrong Contest, which promotesthe importance of positivelyengaging young men inpreventing sexual violence at thebeginning of school in August orSeptember. Winners received 300free Mediaworks posters andrunners-up 100 posters. Twentyapplicants from high schools andcolleges around the countrysubmitted creative plans forutilizing the posters as part of theirhigh school and college’s sexualviolence prevention programming.An expert panel of judges chose asfirst-place winners, Marilyn J. Kile,Sexual Assault PreventionCoordinator at University ofWisconsin–Whitewater and GloriaSchuba, Family NursePractitioner/Coordinator atWoodbridge High School WellnessCenter.

REACHThe 8th Annual Men ofStrength AwardsAs the themes “My Strength Is Notfor Hurting” and “Men of Strength”have grown increasingly popularthroughout the world in recentyears, it became apparent thatMCSR’s annual awards event wasdue for a name change. Initiallycalled The Frederick DouglassAwards, the ceremony will alwaysremain connected to Mr. Douglass,but in 2006 the name was changedto Men of Strength Awards, moreclosely uniting it with MCSR’sdefining phrases and messages. The change in name alsocoincided with the first time wepresented a young man with theOutstanding Men of Strength ClubMember Award. Graduating senior,Justin Evans, brought anunwavering commitment to theMen of Strength Club. “Caring” isthe word Neil Irvin, NationalDirector of the Men of StrengthClub, uses to describe Justin. Hewas as memorable to MCSR as theclub was to him: “I'll alwaysremember the Men of StrengthClub and Men Can Stop Rape asways for young men my age tostand for something positive. Theysay ‘A man who stands for nothing

will fall for anything.' Men ofStrength and MCSR gave mesomething to stand for.” Preetmohan Singh, Senior Analystfor Interfaith Alliance, and PaulCharron, Chairman and CEO for LizClaiborne Inc., joined Justin as Menof Strength honorees. As someonecommitted to all members of thenational community, PreetmohanSingh, the Washington, DC Man ofStrength Honoree, has been astrong ally of women. At theInterfaith Alliance, he has lobbiedfor expansion of hate crimeslegislation to include violenceagainst women and the LGBTcommunity as protectedcategories. Paul Charron, the National Man ofStrength Honoree, imbues theworld of business with a humanheart that not only transforms theworkplace, but also the familiesand communities in which we live.He has been instrumental inadvancing Liz Claiborne Inc.’s“Love Is Not Abuse,” acomprehensive first-of-its kindcorporate domestic violenceprevention program.

Russ Parr, host of the nationallysyndicated “Russ Parr MorningShow,” emceed an evening ofinspiration at the National PressClub, sponsored by longtimeAwards supporter Fannie MaeFoundation, as well as EileenFisher, Fleet Feet Sports, and LizClaiborne Inc.

Men Can Stop Rape in theMediaMCSR’s programs and materialsreceived more media coveragethan at any point in its history, bothhere and abroad. Patrick Lemmonwas a keynote speaker at a seriesof “Involving Men” events inEngland, Scotland, NorthernIreland, and Wales, organized byAmnesty International UK andMen’s Health Forum Scotland. Theevents received considerable playin the press, especially in NorthernIreland, where Patrick appeared inThe Irish Times and BelfastTelegraph.Back in the States, CALCASA,partnering with PainePR,generated a blitz of mediacoverage for the My StrengthCampaign. A remarkable 150+news stories appeared in the press,which set a new precedent for

rape prevention initiativesthroughout the nation. Print, TV,and radio coverage in English andSpanish included the Los AngelesTimes, Fresno Bee, Riverside Press-Telegram, San Luis Obispo Tribune,Mundo LA, Vida en el Valle, LaPrensa de Riverside, The AdvocateMagazine, NPR's All ThingsConsidered and Talk of the City,and ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, andUnivision affiliates statewide.During March 2006, Men Can StopRape launched its own mediacampaign when it reached out touniversity student newspapersabout college men's positive role increating a safe spring break forwomen and men. Interview Snapshot Development Director, Barbara Saylor,spoke with Mary Mulcahy, a ProgramOfficer at the Morris and GwendolynCafritz Foundation, about theimportance of funding gender violenceprevention work with young men. Ms.Mulcahy, whose focus area is Children,Youth and Families, including out-of-school time programs, youthdevelopment, child welfare/foster care,and early childhood education, hasworked with Men Can Stop since 2001.Barbara: Mary, as someone responsiblefor guiding the funding decisions of alarge local foundation, what was yourfirst impression of Men Can Stop Rape?Mary: From the beginning, I was veryexcited about the work of MCSR. Thisorganization was challenging youngmen to take a lead in the fight againstviolence towards women. Thisapproach made so much sense to me,as rape, domestic violence andbattering are not just "women's issues." Barbara: Why did you believe it wasimportant to fund the organization’smission?Mary: Before MCSR, no organizationwas targeting young men around thisissue in DC. The founders of MCSRrealized that all people should beengaged in the fight to end rape andviolence towards women.

Barbara: And lastly, Mary, how doesMen Can Stop Rape help the Morris andGwendolyn Cafritz foundation achieveits goals?Mary: The Morris and Gwendolyn CafritzFoundation is committed to improvingthe quality of life for all DC residents.Clearly, MCSR's work has helped tomake our city safer and healthier forour young men and women.

A STRENGTHENING

OF RELATIONSHIPS

Family has been an importanttheme for Men Can Stop Rape in2006. It is the year in which ourfamily – internal and extended –has grown larger than ever beforeand welcomed a host of newmembers. To the branch of ourfamily comprised of a diverserange of supporters, this growthrepresents a strengthening ofexisting ties and the birth of newrelationships. Longtime supporters like The Morrisand Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundationare joined by newcomers like theMoran Family Foundation. A sizablegroup of Washington, DC-basedindividuals now share commonground with MCSR family from NewYork City to Oak Harbor,Washington. Our corporate cousinsare from backgrounds as broad asfashion and footwear to radio andretail. The 50/50 Club, a distinguishedcircle of generous donors giving$1,000 and more each year, spentan evening with our program

partners from California. This socialgathering and educationalopportunity demonstrated howtheir invaluable core supporthelped to grow a local project intoa nationally sought-after modelprogram.
