Combining different syllables and how vowels effect consonants

Long Vowel Sounds vowel consonant “e” syllable

The 2 sounds of “s”

How does an “e” following a vowel-consonant effect the sound of the initial vowel?

4. Long vowel sounds, vowel consonant “e” syllable, two sounds of “s”, “ve” rule

“ve” rule

Vowels say their name Ex: “a” says /a/ in safe

“u” has two long sounds /u/ - mule

/u/ - rule

the “e” is silent

the job of the “e” is to make the vowel

long

actually, the “e” can jump over one sound to make the vowel long Ex: bathe the digraph “th” makes

one sound

hop - “o” is short

vs.

Hop + e = hope “o” is long

“s” says /s/ and /z/

“s” says /z/ between two vowels

Ex: rose

“s” sometimes says /z/ as a suffix Ex: bug + s = bugs

V can not end an English word

if a word ends with the sound /v/ an “e” must be added

this is called a v-e exception because the “e” does not make

the vowel long. /hav/ – have

/Giv/ – give
