Names Suggested for the New Dunes Amenities Center

Thanks to the 143 people who submitted possible names for the new amenities center. Some did research, some convened brainstorming groups, some enlisted the help of their families, and one person even submitted sketches of possible logos to go with the names.

In total, 534 names were submitted. Some were duplicates, but there were 363 unique names. This document lists them all, as well as the comments or explanations people offered. Names that were suggested by multiple people are indicated with an asterisk and the number, e.g., (*4).

To make it easier to think about, the names are sorted into categories. Don’t miss the “Fun” category, as well as the last page that gives suggestions about how to group names.

Most of the names could be used for the overall facility or its individual parts (i.e., parallel to Plantation Club and Cove Room). Names could be followed, if desired, with “Club,” or “Center,” or “Room” or even, as some people suggested, “House” or “Inn.”

What Happens Next?

1. Read the names aloud and see which ones appeal to you. Talk to your friends and neighbors at the pool, the tennis court, the Tiki bar, the beach, the lobby. Ideally, community sentiment will naturally begin to coalesce around a small group of preferred names.

2. Share your thoughts. Talk to members of the Long-Range Planning Committee’s (LRPC) working group (see below). They will meet on Tuesday, March 6, to reduce the list to perhaps 3-5 “finalists.” If you want to share written comments with the whole working group, email them to Daphne Jameson, [email protected].

3. After the March 6 meeting, the LRPC will send recommendations to the Property Owners’ Association (POA). These will be made public, so you’ll have another chance to express opinions and influence the decision. Ideally, community consensus will emerge.

4. The POA will consider the names at their Wednesday, March 21, meeting and will make a decision then or at some time after that.

Criteria

Names should (1) be clearly relevant to the concepts of “Coastal” and “Dunes,” (2) convey the level of quality and luxury implicit in a “premier” residential community, (3) distinguish the Dunes from other Naples communities, (4) be easy to pronounce and remember.

Some Additional Suggestions Received

• “Whatever name is picked, someone should secure the .com name for it ASAP.” [Domain name, possibly .org, too]

• “The font that’s chosen is also very important and will connote the feel and energy of our community and its amenities.”

• “Our signage should reflect The Dunes script typeface – whimsy & romance.”

• “The chosen names need to coordinate with other names on the property in some way. For instance, our buildings are all named for Caribbean Islands. Our location has water views, the Gulf, Turkey Bay, and waterway preserves.”

• “The amenities center should not be called a ‘club.’ One voluntarily chooses to belong to a club, but everyone who lives at the Dunes automatically has access to its facilities. Clubs are often more personal.”

SUGGESTIONS FOR GROUPS OF NAMES

We really like tying into the coastal idea, but feel that the actual name "Coastal Club" seems rather cold and almost business-like. We always liked "The Cove", which is already used for the dining room and conveys a warmer, friendlier feeling than coastal. We like it, too, because it's not overused and it can also be seen as a sort of explanation for what/where The Dunes is. At the same time, it allows for a wide range of options for complementary names; i.e., the Landing (for the "tiki" bar), the Lagoon (for the pool), the Haven (for the community room), The Bayou (for the crafts room), and even the Sand Bar (for the indoor/outdoor bar). Additionally, nothing prevents adding some flora (The Royal Palm for the dining room) and/or fauna (The Eagles' Nest for the business area) names as appropriate to the space.

******************

Dunes Island Club. If the name incorporates ‘Island’ in the title, then naming specific areas (dining room, gym, function rooms) could follow with names like Stranded, Marooned, Shipwrecked (good for the bar!), Ashore, Beached, Castaway, High & Dry, Outer Banks, Reef.

If the overall facility is called “Paradise Coast,” then individual rooms could be named after coastal elements: For example, “Sand Bar” (indoor-outdoor bar), “Seashells” and “Sandpipers” (dining rooms), “Mangroves” (private dining), “Tradewinds” (community room), “Osprey” and “Eagle” (flex rooms) and “Beachcombers” (the tiki bar). Maybe “Hurricane” to signify strength and power for the fitness center!

The Seacoast Centre at The Dunes, an oasis for healthy lifestyle with social and sports activities including:

• The Sports Center • The Tennis Club • The Dunes Resort Pool

• The Royal Palm Room (inside dining) • The Courtyard (fire pit area) • The Sand Bar (Tiki)

• The Palm Bar (indoor/outdoor bar) • The Plaza (outdoor seating for dining) • The Vanderbilt Room (small VIP dining, combining the high-end image of the Vanderbilt family name with our

local street name.) • Meeting Room: The Floridian Room

• Meeting Room: The Sanctuary Room ******************

The Palm Club -- which could just be called The Palm, or Palms. If we’re naming different venues in it, they could be named specific types of Florida palms such as Bismarck Room, the Queen Room, the Bottle Palm, the Coconut Room, the Cane Palm, the Fountain Palm, the Royal Palm, etc. Since we are surrounded by beautiful palms, this seems like the best and most logical name…..plus it’s easy to pronounce and remember for younger generations. As well, I don’t believe it would be competing with other nearby communities, restaurants, etc.

It is our opinion that “renaming” the Plantation Club is simply perpetuating this old concept that “naming” gives to anything. Thus naming automobiles, i.e. Impala, Enclave, Regal, Corolla, Focus, Avalon, etc. can be compared to The Dunes, Sea Grove, Plantation Club, Antigua, Barbados, Cayman, Grande Dominica, Grande Geneva, etc. More upgraded automobiles are now numbered instead of named. I.e., E550, A8, 535i, etc. Now that we have agreed to tear down and rebuild the gatehouse and club, let’s really start thinking outside the box – and have some fun in the process! Let’s start with the main name “The Dunes”. Yes, the property USED to be all sand dunes back in the day. Well no longer! So I say let’s have a contest for the MAIN NAME. Then the various buildings can utilize that name and a number to distinguish each. Let’s say the complex is renamed “Naples”. (Just saying.) Then The Planation Club becomes Naples Amenity Center, Naples Fitness Center, Naples Tennis Center, Naples Restaurant, etc. The guest cottages become Naples Cottage 01, Naples Cottage 02, Naples Cottage 03, etc. Instead of Antigua, Barbados, Cayman, the buildings become Naples Tower 01, Naples Tower 02, Naples Tower 03, Naples Tower 04, etc. The Grande Preserve becomes Naples Preserve…Do you get what we’re driving at? I hope this is clear.
