A National Jubilee and Six District CelebrationsMarked the PRCUA’s 140th Anniversary Year - 2013

The 140th Anniversary of the founding of the PolishRoman Catholic Union of America was certainly an occasionworth celebrating in 2013 - and celebrate we did! TheExecutive Committee decided that this momentous occasionshould be observed nationwide by our members, thereforeDistrict commemorations were held, as well as a NationalJubilee in October, the month of the founding of the PRCUA.

District #8 in Chicago, IL was the first to celebrate, onFebruary 17, 2013 in Orland Park, IL. Not only did District #8pay tribute to the 140th anniversary of the PRCUA, but it alsocommemorated District #8’s 60th Anniversary.

On May 19th, PRCUA Toledo Societies #1584, #1633, #1617and #719 held a Polka Mass and Brunch in observance of the140th Jubilee, held at the PRCUA Club in Toledo, OH.

The National Jubilee began with the Opening of the“PRCUA - 140 Years of History” Exhibit and Reception held atthe Polish Museum of America on Friday, October 4, 2013.

Festivities continued the following day with the 140th

Anniversary Mass held at St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish inChicago, IL, followed by a gala banquet at White EagleBanquets in Niles, IL.

On October 6th, District #10 in Michigan held a 140thJubilee Mass in Detroit, and a banquet in Sterling Heights, MI.

A week later, on Oct. 13, District #5 in Cleveland, OH, helda Mass and dinner to commemorate the PRCUA’s anniversary.

On Sunday, October 17th, the 140th Jubilee was celebratedwith a Mass and dinner by District #6 in Milwaukee, WI,attended by Res. V.P. Anna Sokolowski and Secretary-Treasurer James Robaczewski. That same day, District #3 inPhiladelphia, PA, held a 140th Anniversary reception andMass attended by President & Mrs. Joseph Drobot, Jr.

The final Jubilee observance was held in District #9 onSaturday, November, 2nd in Chicago Heights, IL. District #9also marked its own 60th Anniversary at this dual celebration.

This Special Edition commemorates the year-longcelebrations that hailed the PRCUA’s 140th Anniversary year!

PRCUA FlagThe first banner -

depicting the Union’s patron,the Sacred Heart of Jesus -was donated to the PRCUAby 14 women delegates at the30th PRCUA Convention,held in Erie, PA in 1907. Sincethat time, the Union hasalways had a banner. In fact,when the original banner wasworn out, the PRCUAWomen’s Departmentreplaced it by donating a newbanner in 1937.

However, the PRCUAhas not had an official flag.Therefore, in honor of the140th anniversary of theUnion, two PRCUA flagswere created - a formal onewith gold fringe and anotherto be flown, without fringe.

The flag depicts theofficial PRCUA logo in redand navy blue on a field ofwhite, with the words“Founded 1873” below thelogo in navy blue.

At the Mass marking theNational Celebration of the140th Anniversary of thePRCUA in Chicago, IL onOctober 5, 2013, PRCUANational Chaplain Rev.Canon Walter Ptak officiallyblessed the flag.

The flag has been usedsince that time at officialPRCUA events, carried bythe National Flag bearers,along with the American flagand the flag of the Republicof Poland.

Opening of PRCUA History Exhibit



National 140th Jubilee CelebrationCHICAGO, IL - The National 140th Jubilee of the founding of

the Polish Roman Catholic Union of America began on Friday,October 4, 2013, at 7 p.m. with the Opening of the “PRCUA - 140Years of History” Exhibit, held at the Polish Museum of America.The Exhibit, curated by Narod Polski Editors Kathryn Rosypal andLidia Kowalewicz, with the help of Archivists H. Misterka and T.Sromek as well as Photo Collection Curator J. Siegel, displayedartifacts, historical documents and photographs through the decades.

Guests were warmly welcomed by President Joseph Drobot, Jr.and Res. V.P. Anna Sokolowski. Poland’s Deputy Consul GeneralRobert Rusiecki acknowledged the important contributions made bythe PRCUA to Poland during its darkest years and thanked thePRCUA. K. Rosypal and L. Kowalewicz briefly addressed the crowdand thanked everyone who helped prepare the Exhibit. The editorswere presented with a bouquet of red and white flowers. Guests thenenjoyed the reception as they browsed through the historical display.

MASS - The Jubilee continued the next day, Saturday, October 5,beginning with the 140th Jubilee Mass held at 4 p.m. at St. StanislausKostka Parish in Chicago, where the national PRCUA office waslocated in Chicago from 1874 to the early 1900s.

The main celebrant of the Mass was Rev. Canon Walter J. Ptak,PRCUA National Chaplain. He was joined by Vice Chaplain Rev.Canon Anthony D. Iwuc; Msgr. Thomas C. Machalski,Rector/Chancellor of Orchard Lake Schools; Rev. Anthony Bus, CR,Pastor of St. Stanislaus Kostka; Very Rev. Gene Szarek, CR,Provincial, Congregation of the Resurrection; Rev. Andrzej MaslejakSCh; Rev. Jacek Palica OCD; and Rev. Jason Torba.

Dignitaries processed into the church, led by national flagbearers Stephen DeLonka, Jr. (D7), John Frankowicz (D8) and PaulPawlowski (D9). Students from various PRCUA Polish dance andlanguage schools followed, with PRCUA past officers and directors,current national directors and officers and esteemed members of theclergy close behind.

Guest organist Witold Socha enhanced the Mass with hymns.Readers were PRCUA dancers. At the Communion, PoloniaEnsemble sang “Barka” accompanied by Musical Dir. MieczyslawDzis on the accordion.

Fr. Ptak gave a moving homily that acknowledged the PRCUA’sfounders for their foresight in recognizing the needs of Polishimmigrants in America, and creating this great organization to helpthem. He also acknowledged the dedication of PRCUA’s manyleaders at all levels, and its loyal members over the years who madethis anniversary possible.

At the Offertory, the 1896 PRCUA Constitution was presentedby Past Pres. Francis Rutkowski; the 1887 Certificate of Incorporationwas offered by Pres. Emeritus Edward G. Dykla; an icon of theSacred Heart of Jesus was given by President Joseph A. Drobot, Jr.Bread and Wine were presented by Res. V.P. Anna Sokolowski andV.P. Robert Bielenda, as Secy.-Tres. James Robaczewski announcedthe presentors and their gifts.

PRCUA’s new flag was unveiled by 2013 Cinderella KelseyCetnarowski and Prince Charming Daniel Zuk, and blessed by VeryRev. Canon Walter J. Ptak. (See flag on page 2.)

BANQUET - The Jubilee continued after Mass with a banquetheld at White Eagle Banquets in Niles, IL, attended by over 300people. During the cocktail hour, guests sampled hot hors d’oeuvresand viewed panels displaying PRCUA history.

As guests entered, they were escorted to their seats by membersof the Wesoly Lud Polish Folk Dance Co. or Polonia Ensemble,dressed in beautiful Polish costumes. The banquet hall looked veryelegant with tables and chairs covered in ivory and gold.

Secy.-Tres. James Robaczewski welcomed everyone andintroduced M.C. Maria Ciesla, Pres., Polish Museum of America. Sheintroduced the dignitaries, some escorted by dancers: Dir. Rev. A. Iwuc offered the invocationand Res. V.P. Anna Sokolowski made ahearty toast to the PRCUA. Everyoneenjoyed a delicious dinner, followed bydances from Nowy Sacz, presented byWesoly Lud Polish Folk Dance Co.

The main speaker was FrancisCardinal George, who praised thecharitable endeavors undertaken byPRCUA over 140 years, as well as ourloyalty to the Church. Then Deputy ChiefMaciej Pisarski spoke about PRCUA’scontinued support for Poland. PAC/PNAPresident Frank Spula spoke aboutPRCUA’s consistent support of the PAC,especially the donations it raised forPoland during the time of martial law.

The next speaker was Consul Generalof the Rep. of Poland in Chicago, PaulinaKapuscinska. She said, “The Republic ofPoland appreciates the PRCUA’scommitment to cultivating Polishtraditions, defending its good name, andpopularizing its beautiful culture. As atoken of that great appreciation,” shecontinued, “the Republic of Polanddecided to bestow upon your fineorganization one of the highestdistinctions granted to individuals andorganizations who protect and popularizethe Polish culture. It is my great honor topresent to you, on behalf of the Ministerof Culture and National Heritage, theSilver Medal of Merit for Culture ‘GloriaArtis,’ for your outstanding contributionto the promotion of Polish culture and theprotection of the Polish nationalheritage.” The medal (depicted on page 1)was accepted by President Joseph A.Drobot, Jr., who expressed his gratitudeon behalf of the PRCUA.

(Cont. from pg. 4) We arehere this evening tocelebrate the Past, andtoast those who have gonebefore, who helped inmaking our PRCUA thegreat organization that itis. We are also here to enjoythe present and toast eachother for continuing thework of our predecessors,in carrying out thePRCUA mission. But, weare also here toacknowledge and acceptour responsibility to future

generations of PRCUA members, to assure them of the continued success of our PRCUA. 140 years is a long timeand no easy task for any organization to survive, let alone prosper.

Here in Chicago, we can mention Montgomery Ward, The Pullman Company and Marshall Field, as just a fewwho have ceased to exist. The great Chicago meat packers, the stockyards and the many railroads are also onlymemories of the past. How is it that the Polish Roman Catholic Union of America is still here and going strong?

Let’s step back, just a little bit, to when Polish people began settling in America. Polish migration to Americabegan in earnest in 1854, with the first established community in Panna Maria, TX. By 1872, there were over200,000 Poles in America and more were coming. They moved to the Northeast and Midwest as jobs were plentiful.

Why did they come to America? Why did they leave the land of their birth, the land that meant so much tothem? Because America offered two things: Freedom and Hope. Freedom and Hope to dream of a better life withopportunities for themselves and their families for generations to come. WE ARE THE BENEFICIARIES OF THATHOPE AND THOSE DREAMS!

But those dreams were not easy to obtain. The streets were not paved in gold and the new arrivals found thework very hard. Discrimination and abuse of the immigrant prevailed. An individual against the system was at aloss. Thus, the need for joining together in a common bond of language, heritage and religion was created.

Fr. Wincenty Barzynski and his brother, Jan, recognized their need, along with Fr. Gieryk, Fr. Moczygemba, Fr.Dabrowski, as well as other priests and layme; thus in 1873, the Polish Roman Catholic Union of America wasformed. It was founded to fill a need and to provide a sense of belonging, of identity, a feeling of family, friends,religion and culture, a remembrance of the old country, a provider of information and representation in the newcountry.

It established a burial fund, a family survival fund, and eventually life insurance to assist in the financial needsof its members. The PRCUA helped to establish Polish parishes, schools, orphanages and played a significant part inthe founding of the Orchard Lake Schools, especially SS Cyril and Methodius Seminary for the training of Polishboys for the priesthood, and for service to the growing Polish population.

That is history, all well and good, but why is it still here today? There are several reasons: our motto “For Godand Country”, our dedication and the continuance to our mission of protecting our Polish culture and religion, andproviding financial products to all our members. But more so, I think there are two most important reasons for oursuccess: One – our patron THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS. Throughout our history, He has been there for us.Through depressions, wars, social turmoil, He has been our shield and protector. We are devoted to the Sacred Heart.

And the other reason is our name: “THE POLISH ROMAN CATHOLIC UNION OF AMERICA.” Start withthe word “POLISH”: What are Polish characteristics? Well, Poles are hardworking, devoted to family, to church, tocountry. They have integrity, loyalty, determination, and are committed to duty and dedicated to preserving Polishheritage and traditions in America. Not a bad start for the name of an organization.

“ROMAN CATHOLIC”- What does this have to do with our organization? EVERYTHING! To theimmigrant, being Polish meant being Catholic. The two were synonyms, so it was natural to embrace our religionand incorporate it into our name. Polish people are extremely devoted to the Church, preserving and protecting ourright to practice, in the Polish way, the traditions and church devotions of Poland in America.

The word “UNION” is a coming together. It is a coming together of Polish heritage, love of family, dedication tocountry and devotion to church; of religious and lay people coming together to form an organization for the good andwelfare of its Polish constituents.

And all of this came together in “AMERICA,” the adopted land, “The land of the free and the home of thebrave.” The coming together of Polish, Roman Catholic, Union, in America could not fail!

And with the continued protection of the SACRED HEART OF JESUS, as our patron, we will carry on andsucceed for another 140 years.

God bless the Republic of Poland; God bless the United States of America; and God bless the Polish RomanCatholic Union of America!

The festivities continued with Polonia Ensemble dancing the Krakowiak. Marlena Dzis and Pres.Drobot sang “La ci darem la mano,” with the participation of First Lady Judith Drobot, to the delight ofeveryone present. Msgr. Thomas Machalski gave the benediction, which was followed by the Wesoly Luddancers performing a lively “Polish American Chicago Polka.” Guests stayed late into the night, dancingto the music of the Romeo Band, sampling the Sweets Table and enjoying each other’s company.

The PRCUA is key to preserving Polish heritage and traditions, as well as Catholic values, in theU.S.A. Let us all rededicate ourselves to helping our fraternal organization to prosper by spreading thegood news among our family and friends, of all the many fraternal benefits that the PRCUA has to offer.

Marks 140th JubileeMarks 140th Jubilee

PHILADELPHIA, PA - District 3 and the PhiladelphiaSatellite Office celebrated the PRCUA’s 140th Anniversary inconjunction with the Polish American Congress Eastern PADistrict’s Dozynki Festival on Sunday, October 27, 2013.

The celebration began at the PRCUA Philadelphia Office,in the Port Richmond section, with a reception of lightrefreshments. Guests walked down memory lane as theyviewed photos that displayed the local history of the PRCUAand the UPWA that merged with the PRCUA 16 years ago.Families with two and three generations of members were inattendance. Sharon Quinn, Philadelphia Office Manager, washostess of the event, and she was glad PRCUA PresidentJoseph A. Drobot, Jr. and his wife, Judith, were present toexperience Philadelphia fraternalism first-hand.

Faithful longtime members Helen Hrabowski, RitaWaryga and their families, past officers, past debutantes andthe UPWA’s last Queen, Gail Miller Ward with her familyattended, as well as other devoted members and neighbors.

The celebration continued with a Special Mass at St.Adalbert’s Church, across the street from the PRCUA SatelliteOffice. PRCUA dignitaries processed into church, along withPolish Scouts and members of the Polish American Congress.Theresa Romanowski, Director of the Polish AmericanCultural Center, along with President and Mrs. Drobot, led theway into the church that was filled to capacity. Rev. JanPalkowski was the celebrant of the Mass. The main altarfeatured two beautiful floral baskets in fall colors, while theSacred Heart and Blessed Mother side altars were adornedwith baskets of red roses and white mums to celebratePRCUA’s 140th Anniversary - donated by District #3.

Children in colorful Polish costumes sang Polish hymnsthroughout Mass, directed by Maria Kolenda, while PolishScouts stood as Honor Guards. President & First Lady Drobothad the honor of presenting the Offertory gifts.

Fr. Jan Palkowski, Pastor, spoke most kindly about thePRCUA and its role in helping to establish St. Adalbert’sChurch so long ago. He spoke about the founding of thePRCUA and its activities, mentioning that our fraternal wasstarted to help the newly-arrived Poles who settled inAmerica. He also introduced President and Mrs. Drobot.

After Mass, the celebration continued at PAC’s HarvestFestival at St. Adalbert’s Hall, where delicious Polish food wasserved while a band played polkas.

PRCUA members Michael Blichasz, President of the PAC -E. PA District, and Theresa Romanowski, invited President &Mrs. Drobot to join a group in starting the festivities with atraditional Polonez. Pres. Drobot, who is known for hissinging talents, was asked to lead the singing as well. JonTaylor, Esquire, and his family joined in the celebration, as didMr. & Mrs. Rakowski, new business owners in the area. Theafternoon went by quickly and a good time was had by all.

Thanks go to Helen Melnick, Sharon Quinn and District #3Director Joanne Zajac for all their hard work in arranging thiscelebration and to Dr. Janusz Romanski for taking photos.Elaine Burkhardt - who is recuperating - was in our prayers atthis event. A special thank you also goes to Michael Blichaszand Theresa Romanowski for allowing the PRCUA to combineour celebration with the PAC Harvest Festival.

District #5 Celebration in ClevelandDistrict #5 Celebration in ClevelandCLEVELAND, OH - On Sunday, October 13,

PRCUA District #5 held its celebration honoringthe 140th anniversary of the founding of thePRCUA.

The gala event was held at St. Casimir Church,opening with a solemn Mass at 11:30 a.m.PRCUA National Secy.-Tres. James Robaczewskiled the procession into church carrying thenewly-blessed PRCUA flag. Veterans of thePolish American Veterans Assoc. (PAVA)General Sikorski Post 203 followed. Piast PolishFolk Song and Dance Ensemble came next incostume. Officers of local Polish organizationspreceded the PRCUA Officers and Directors inthe procession.

HOLY MASS - Rev. Eric Orzech, Pastor of St.Casimir Parish, was the celebrant of the Mass,which was

conducted in both Polish and English. Before the finalblessing, PRCUA National Director Mitchell Bienia welcomedthe congregation to the special PRCUA Anniversary Mass.National President Joseph A. Drobot, Jr. then greeted thecrowd with an explanation of the medal he received from theRepublic of Poland, called “Gloria Artis Silver Medal forMerit to Culture.” President Drobot stressed that the medalwas awarded to all Polonia, not to him personally, or just tothe PRCUA, but to all Pol-Ams for their continuing efforts tomaintain Polish culture in America; therefore we can all takepride in this award.

BENEDICTION AND ROSARY- St. Casimir Church wasre-opened about one year ago by directive of the Vatican, afterbeing closed for nearly 3 years in a down-sizing move by the Bishop of Cleveland in 2009. Sincethe parish holds only one service per week, i.e. Sunday Mass, all other devotions must also beheld on Sunday. After Mass, during October, recitation of the rosary and Adoration of theBlessed Sacrament are held. Many guests enjoyed this ritual, saying that it has been some timesince they experienced it.

PRCUA representatives came from throughout District #5, including delegations fromAkron, Lorain, and Toledo, led by Joan Sylak, also a Director of PRCUA District #5. PRCUArepresentation also came from Detroit and Buffalo to share in this great occasion. In addition toPresident Drobot, accompanied by his charming wife Judy, Vice President Robert Bielenda andhis beautiful wife, Eleanor, attended the event, as did Secretary-Treasurer James Robaczewskiand his lovely wife, Elaine.

LUNCHEON - After services, a gala luncheon was served by the reception committee of St.Casimir Parish. It is customary to serve lunch after Mass each Sunday, but this day was special,bringing the largest crowd ever – about 200 guests. During the luncheon, ethnic music wasprovided by the talented John Szleszynski & Son for everyone’s listening pleasure.

PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS - The Marketing Department of the PRCUA provided avariety of PRCUA promotional materials for distribution. Guests were happy to receive thesegifts. Hopefully, these items, emblazoned with the PRCUA name/logo, will keep the PRCUA inthe minds of Cleveland area residents when insurance needs arise.

PIAST POLISH SONG AND DANCE ENSEMBLE - After lunch the crowd wasentertained by a suite of dances from the Krakow region of Poland, from the repertoire ofPRCUA’s PIAST Polish Folk Song and Dance Ensemble. Ashley Budzilo began the programwith a solo dance choreographed for the Kujawiak, a regional dance of Poland. Her openingmoves portrayed her loneliness for her absent love, as she swirled with grace and poise,sweeping the floor with a broom, which served as a prop. Soon her loneliness turned to eageranticipation as she took sight of her love in the distance. Ashley excitedly straightened her skirt,fixed her hair and adjusted her kerchief, with expressive dance moves that clearly showed joyand happiness. To the surprise of everyone, the object of her devotion was Joseph A. Drobot,PRCUA President. At the finale of the dance, Ashley left the broom with President Drobot asshe scurried away, leaving him to finish the sweeping job. Smiles of delightful surprise gracedthe faces of everyone in attendance. The dance group has become very accomplished in recentyears, performing intricate steps with sharp precision. Piast is truly a wonderful reflection ofPRCUA. At the conclusion of the dance program, choreographer Agnieszka Kotlarcik invitedyoung people in the audience to join the dance troupe.

Guests lingered in the parish hall to socialize with former acquaintances as well as to meetnew friends. St. Casimir Parish has earned a reputation of being a place for all Polonia to uniteand share a fine meal, as well as good conversation. The PRCUA’s District #5 AnniversaryCelebration surely contributed to this spirit of support and cooperation among Polishorganizations. Congratulations and best wishes to PRCUA for continued success.

District #5 Celebration in ToledoDistrict #5 Celebration in Toledo

TOLEDO, OH - District #5 in Toledo was the secondPRCUA District to commemorate the 140th Anniversary of thePolish Roman Catholic Union of America. On May 19th,PRCUA Toledo Societies #1584, #1633, #1617 and #719 held aPolka Mass and Brunch at the PRCUA Club in Toledo, Ohio. Afull-capacity crowd was in attendance.

Special guests included PRCUA National President JosephA. Drobot, Jr. and First Lady Judy Drobot; National DirectorJoan Sylak of District 5 and National Director of District #5Mitchell Bienia; National Director of District 10 ChristopherOzog; and Past PRCUA President and Mrs. Francis Rutkowski.

Entertainment for the event was provided by Toledo’sPRCUA Echoes of Poland Dance Ensemble, under thedirection of Paulina Tul Ortyl, Choreographer.

The celebration began with a Polka Mass at the PRCUAClub, celebrated by Reverend Paul Kwiatkowski, ToledoSocieties’ Chaplain, with the assistance of Tom Jesionowski.Embellishing the Mass with uplifting polka music were:Randy Krajewski, Jimmy Owczarzak, and Jim Rutkowski.

The Echoes Children’s Ensemble performed a repertoire ofdances which were much appreciated by the crowd. TheEchoes are the brainchild of Paulina Tul Ortyl, who has beendirecting the dancers and choreographing their performancesfor the past 45 years. Bravo, Paulina!

Then, a delicious buffet brunch was served by a group ofPRCUA ladies and enjoyed by all. Guests shared a specialcamaraderie that is uniquely inspired by membership in ourfraternal organization.

A sincere "thank you" is extended to National DirectorJoan Sylak and Aggie Dahar for organizing thiscommemorative anniversary event. Special thanks also go toeveryone who had anything to do with the success of thisPolka Mass and brunch. Your hard work is appreciated.

140th Anniversary in District #6 - Wisconsin

MILWAUKEE,WI - OnS u n d a y ,October 27th,2013, District #6celebrated the1 4 0 t hAnniversary of

the PolishRoman CatholicUnion of

America. It was a beautiful Fall day, as members and friendsgathered at St Augustine Parish on the south side ofMilwaukee, WI, for Mass.

Reverend Ronald Kotecki, Administrator of the Parish, is aPRCUA member and is very familiar with our fraternalorganization. He had kind words to say to the congregationabout the Polish Roman Catholic Union of America. He alsopraised the PRCUA for the significant contributions it hasmade to the Polish American community in Wisconsin andelsewhere in the U.S.A., over the past 140 years.

PRCUA Resident Vice President AnnaSokolowski was asked to say a fewwords before Mass ended. Althoughshe was surprised by the imprompturequest, V.P. Sokolowski made all ofthe PRCUA members proud with herinspiring and memorable words! Shespoke with such love, knowledge, andpride - not only for our fraternalorganization but also for the Catholic

Church and our country. Hats off tothis wonderful lady, who representsour organization so well.

Also in attendance was PRCUASecretary-Treasurer James Robaczewski. President JosephDrobot and his wife were not present because they wereparticipating in PRCUA District #3’s 140th AnniversaryCelebration in Philadelphia, PA, on the same day.

Joining the PRCUA contingent at the Mass were severalrepresentatives of the Polish Women’s Alliance and the PolishAmerican Congress. We thank them for supporting ourorganization with their attendance at this special anniversary.

After Mass, everyone attended a brunch held at thePolonez Restaurant in St. Francis, WI, where guests enjoyeddelicious Polish food, accordion music and camaraderie..

Sharon Haberski, PRCUA Past National Director ofDistrict #6, welcomed everyone. She introduced NationalResident Vice President Anna Sokolowski and NationalSecretary-Treasurer. Jim Robaczewski, expressing her pleasurethat they were able to attend. She also introduced PRCUADistrict #6 Director Constance Bonin, who thanked everyonefor coming and for helping the Wisconsin PRCUA to celebratethis memorable occasion. Sharon Haberski went on to shareher memories of PRCUA activities and accomplishments inWisconsin - what she fondly called “The good old days!”

What a heartwarming surprise it was when Mark Pienkos,President of the Polish American Congress WisconsinDivision, presented the Executive Officers and DirectorConstance Bonin with a certificate from the State ofWisconsin’s 2013 Senate, proclaiming October as “Polish-American Heritage Month.” It demonstrated that we, PolishAmericans, are being recognized for our contributions andreaffirms our ties with Poland. It was through the efforts ofPresident Pienkos that this proclamation was adopted by theWisconsin Senate. It was great having this announcementmade at our 140th Anniversary celebration.

#8 was the first to celebrate the140th Anniversary of the PRCUA -in addition to District 8’s 60thAnniversary - on Sunday,February 17, 2013. Festivitiesbegan with an Anniversary Massat Our Lady of the Woods Churchin Orland Park, IL, followed by aBanquet at Orland Chateau. Abeautiful, crisp, clear and sunnyday set the scene, enhanced by thepresence of PRCUA’s prestigiousNational Officers and Directors,distinguished guests, loyalsupporters and treasured youth.

The Celebration of Faith wasconducted by Rev. Michael G.Foley, Pastor of Our Lady of theWoods and Chaplain of District 8.Representatives of District 8schools and groups served aslectors for the readings andpetitions. Gifts were offered by theNational PRCUA Officers and the2013 Royal Couple KelseyCetnarowski and Daniel Zuk.

After Mass, guests arrived atOrland Chateau, where they weregreeted with warm words ofwelcome by National Director andPres. of District 8 James Rustik.PRCUA Pres. Joseph A. Drobot Jr.and Secy.-Tres. James Robaczewskisang the American and PolishNational Anthems respectively,with their phenomenal voices.

A heartfelt toast was given byRes. V.P. Anna Sokolowski,followed by congratulatoryremarks from Pres. Drobot andGod's blessing by Rev Foley.During dessert of delicious"gourmet" cupcakes, Dir. Wesoly Lud returned with thePolish American Chicago PolkaCelebration by Eddie Blazonczykand the Versatones. Finally, theentire cast entered to sing thePRCUA Anthem.

Dir. Rustik again expressed theDistrict's sincere appreciation forall those who organized this event,especially fellow Director KrystynaLech, Danielle Lech Kroplewski(Reservations), and especiallyMisia and Richard Jaminski andKrysia Rozwadowski forcompiling the Program Book, theArtistic Program, and decorations.Special thanks to AgnieszkaBastrzyk for designing the beauti-ful 20-ft. banner that accented theballroom at Orland Chateau.

In celebrating the 140thAnniversary of the PRCUA, it willnot suffice to simply mention theanniversary itself, but all that hasbeen accomplished and the rolethat the organization has played inperpetuating Polish heritage in theUnited States. PRCUA, through itsschools, sports programs, dancetroupes and social groups, forms abond among Polish Americans totake pride in their Polish language,culture, and history. We are Polishand together, we are the PolishRoman Catholic Union of America.Here's to another 140!

District #9 DoubleCelebration

CHICAGO HTS., IL, IN - District #9, comprised of Indianaand areas south of the Chicago Suburbs, celebrated its 60thAnniversary, along with the 140th Anniversary of the PRCUA,with a Mass on Saturday, November 2, 2013, at St. KieranChurch in Chicago Heights, IL. The special Mass at Noon wasin honor of All Souls Day, as well as these two historicPRCUA anniversaries.

PRCUA dignitaries took part in the entrance procession,which included PRCUA National Flag Bearers StephenDeLonka, John Frankowicz and Paul Pawlowski; studentsfrom PRCUA’s St. Raphael Kalinowski Polish Language andDance School students from Munster, IN; National PRCUAOfficers Res. V.P. Anna Sokolowski, Secretary-Treasurer JamesRobaczewski and President Joseph A. Drobot, Jr.; PastNational Officers and Directors, District 9 Officers and District#9 National Director Elizabeth Sadus. St. Raphael Kalinowskistudents served as the readers and read the petitions, in Polishand English.

Reverend Stephen Kosinski, Pastor of All Saint’s Church inHammond, IN, was the homilist, injecting his own unique wit,humor and words of wisdom. Throughout the Mass,inspirational hymns were sung by cantor Mary HelenBlankenberger, who was accompanied on the organ by JoanneRossbach.

After Mass, everyone gathered a few blocks away at theGlenwood Oaks Restaurant in Glenwood, IL, for a luncheonmarking this auspicious occasion. Guests were welcomed byDistrict 9 President Paul Pawlowski. Then, PRCUA Secretary-Treasurer James Robaczewski sang the Polish NationalAnthem and PRCUA President Joseph A. Drobot Jr. sang theAmerican National Anthem. Special guests at the luncheonincluded Past District #9 Directors Elizabeth Grabowski andTed Pawlowski, as well as Past Insurance Supervisor BarbaraPawlowski, whose late husband, Casimir, was a District #9National Director.

After lunch, students from the Polish school presented abrief oral history of the PRCUA from its founding in 1873 tothe present.

The 60-year history of District #9 was on display in aphotographic exhibit. It traced the roots of the first Districtmeeting, held at the Polish Home in the Roselandneighborhood of Chicago in 1953, to the present day.

At the conclusion of the program, District #9 NationalDirector Elizabeth Sadus expressed thanks to all who shapedthe history of District #9 and to those who are working tosecure its bright future.

The anniversary event, which was expertly planned andchaired by National Director of District #9 Beth Sadus, endedwith Dist. #9 Past Director Ted Pawlowski, a well-seasonedmusician, playing traditional Polish tunes on his accordion foreveryone’s enjoyment.

The Jubileestarted with Holy Mass beingcelebrated at the historic St.Albertus Roman CatholicChurch in Detroit, MI, the veryplace where our fraternal wasfounded in 1873. PRCUANational Vice Chaplain,Reverend Monsignor Stanley E.Milewski, P.A., was the MainCelebrant.

The Mass was a celebrationof not only the PRCUA’s 140thanniversary, but also marked“October - Polish American

Heritage Month” incollaboration with the Polish

American Historic Site Association. Over two hundred PRCUA dancers,representing eleven Michigan PRCUA dance schools, attended the Massdressed in colorful, authentic Polish folk attire. They participated in theprocession into church, along with PRCUA Executive Officers PresidentJoseph A. Drobot Jr., with First Lady Judith Drobot; Resident V.P. AnnaSokolowski with her husband, Mark; Secretary-Treasurer JamesRobaczewski and his wife, Elaine; V.P. Robert Bielenda, with his wife,Eleanor; National Directors from District #10 Christopher Ozog andThomas Lisiecki; National Director of District #5 Joan Sylak; as well asPresident Emeritus Wallace Ozog, with his wife, Joann. Past Director ofDistrict #10, Barbara Toboy, was also present with her family, as wasAssociate Marketing Dir. Ted Klamerus and his wife, Sally.

During the Mass, hymns were sung by the St Albertus Choir, led byPRCUA member Celeste Grabowski. Celeste was the grand prize winner

in Narod Polski’s 140th Anniversary Quiz. She received a prize of $140 and a PRCUA historybook “The Eagle and the Cross.”

After Mass, guests proceeded to the Polish American Century Club of Sterling Heights, MI,where a dinner was held. Everyone was warmly welcomed by District #10 Director TomLisiecki. The program began with the singing of the Polish and American National Anthems.Then, Monsignor Stanley Milewski offered benediction before the meal. As everyone enjoyedthe wonderful lunch, the eleven Michigan PRCUA dance schools began the program of nationaland regional Polish dances that they prepared especially for this significant anniversary.

In accordance with Polish tradition, the program started with the traditional Polish dancethat opens any great event, the Polonez, performed by the Tatry Dancers. The Syrena Ensemblethen performed the Krakowiak.

Keeping with the theme of Polish national dances, the Halka Dancers performed the Mazur.This was followed by the Polskie Maki Dancers performing a lively Kujawiak/Oberek. Then MalaPolska Dance Ensemble performed their Krakowiak.

This was followed by the Zajaczek Dancers, who performed dances from Spisz. TheGwiazda Dance Group presented a suite of dances from the Zywiec mountain region. TheRogalin Dance Troupe performed the Krakowiak, followed by the Wieliczka Dancers - the firstPRCUA dance group established in Michigan - who performed dances from Lublin, in theeastern part of Poland. Then came another performance of the ever-popular Krakowiak by theOpole Dancers. The Zakopane Dancers concluded the show with a special finale that includedthe performance of a suite of dances from Przeworsk.

ART CONTEST - PRCUA Blessed Pope John Paul II Society #1593, sponsor of Michigan’sPRCUA 140th Anniversary Art Contest, had a lovely display of contest entries set up in theHall. The contest was open to Michigan PRCUA members in Kindergarten through Grade 12.We are grateful to Raymond Okonski and his wife, Suzanne Sloat, who generously sponsoredthis contest; to Mary Ellen Tyszka and Jackie Kolowski, members of Friends of Polish Art, whojudged the contest; and to Joann Ozog who served as Chairperson.

Winners of the Art Contest were announced at the celebration and those present wereawarded their monetary prize. The winners are: K-Grade 3 (1st) Lukasz Wendt, (2nd) PaigeJaczkowski, (3rd) Dennis Barth; Grade 4-7 (1st) Marianna Osentoski, (2nd) Kenny Germain,(tied for 3rd) Joey Smigiel and Grace Ozog; (Grade 8-12) (1st) Kacy Shaheen, (2nd) Ryan Ozog,and (3rd) Lauren McGovern.

President Drobot then expressed congratulations to all thewinners and thanked Society #1593 for sponsoring the contestand Joann Ozog for chairing the contest. He then announced thatthe PRCUA was awarded the Gloria Artis Siver Medal for Merit toCulture, which is a decoration in Arts awarded by the Ministry ofCulture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland topersons and organizations for distinguished contributions to, orprotection of, Polish culture and Polish heritage. PresidentDrobot invited all present to come and view the silver medal, andhe thanked everyone for helping the PRCUA to earn this honor.

PRCUA Resident Vice President Anna Sokolowski, who is inher final year of office, was asked to say a few words. Annathanked all for attending and gave a special “thank you” to all ofthe PRCUA dance groups, their directors, and dancers for theirwonderful performances, for being proud of their Polish heritageand for exhibiting great pride in their membership in the PolishRoman Catholic Union of America.

After lunch, a rousing Sto Lat Jeszcze Raz was sung andeveryone mingled with PRCUA friends and members of otherPol-Am groups: Polish Women’s Alliance, Polish NationalAlliance, Polish American Historical Site Assoc., St. AlbertusHist. Soc. and Polish American Central Citizens Committee.

Thanks are extended to the PRCUA Officers for attending theMichigan celebration, and for bringing special guests Richard &Misia Jaminski, Artistic Directors/Choreographers of PRCUA’sWesoly Lud Polish Folk Dance Co. Na zakończenie, wszyscy młodzi artyści zaśpiewali Hymn ZPRKA.

W dniu 19 maja 1913 r.Towarzystwa #1584, 1633,1617 i 719 z Dystryktu #5ZPRKA, zorganizowały w związku z uroczystościami jubileuszowymi, mszę św. iśniadanie w PRCUA Club w Toledo, OH.

Gośćmi specjalnymi uroczystości byli: prezes ZPRKA Joseph Drobot, Jr. z żonąJudy, dyrektorzy krajowi Dystryktu #5 ZPRKA Joan Sylak i Mitchell Bienia, dyrektorDystryktu #10, Chirstopher Ozog, były prezes ZPRKA Francis Rutkowski i jego żonaPat i oraz Zespół Tańca “Echoes of Poland”.

Mszę św. odprawił kapelan Dystryktu #5 ks. Paul Kwiatkowski, któremu służyłpomocą Tom Jesionowski. Mszę ubogacili grając polkę Randy Krajewski, JimmyOwczarzak i Jim Rutkowski.

Wystawa 140-lecia ZPRKA w Muzeum Polskim w Ameryce

W piątek, 4 października 2013 r. otwarta została wgodzinach wieczornych w Muzeum Polskim w Ameryce(MPA) w Chicago, wystawa poświęcona 140-letniejhistorii ZPRKA, której kustoszami były redaktorki“Narodu Polskiego” Kathryn Rosypal i LidiaKowalewicz, przygotowana dzięki pomocy archiwistów ipracowników MPA, pracowników ZPRKA i dużej grupywolontariuszy.

ZPRKA odbyły się w dniu 5 października2013 r. w Chicago, IL. Uroczystościrozpoczęło uroczyste nabożeństwo wkościele św. Stanisława Kostki, najstarszejparafii polskiej w Chicago, gdzie odprawionazostała również msza św. w czasie 2-giegoSejmu ZPRKA w 1874 r., kiedy siedzibaZPRKA została przeniesiona do Chicago.

Wolność i nadzieję, aby marzyćo lepszym życiu i możliwościach dla siebie i swoich rodzin, dla przyszłych pokoleń.W 1973 r. założone zostało ZPRKA. Powstało, aby wypełnić potrzeby społecznościPolskiej w Stanach Zjednoczonych, w celu zapewnienia im poczucia przynależnościrodzinnej i towarzyskiej, tożsamości religijnej i kulturalnej, pamięci o Starym Krajuoraz jako źródło informacji oraz jako reprezentant Polonii w nowym kraju.Zjednoczenie przetrwało dzięki swemu patronowi - Boskiemu Sercu Jezusa, które nasprowdziło i nad nami czuwało oraz dzięki nazwie - która jest symbolem iwyrazicielem wartości, cechujących naszych rodaków i naszą organizację:samowystarczalności, niezależności, silnej woli, pracowitości, umiłowania wolności,lojalności wobec rodziny, wierności kulturze i tradycji narodowej. Dodatkową atrakcją był występ duetu wosobach prezesa ZPRKA Josepha Drobota i Marleny Dziś, którzy zaśpiewali pieśń“Usta milczą, dusza śpiewa” z operetki “Wesoła wdówka” Lehara oraz „La ci darem lamano...” z opery „Don Giovanni” Mozarta, akompaniowała im Jennifer McCabe.

Modlitwę na zakończenie części oficjalnej odmówił rektor Zespołu Szkół wOrchard Lake, ks. Thomas Machalski.

W niedzielę, 6 października 2013 r. uroczysteobchody 140-lecia ZPRKA odbyły się w Detroit, MI.Gospodarzem uroczystości był Dystrykt #10 ZPRKA.

W południe odprawiona została w zabytkowymkościele św. Wojciecha, gdzie ZPRKA zostało założonew 1873 r., uroczysta msza św. Mszę odprawiłwicekapelan ZPRKA ks. infułat Stanley Milewski.Pieśni śpiewał chór parafialny, któremu przewodziłaCeleste Grabowski, skarbniczka Tow. #1593 ZPRKA.

Dzięki współpracy z Polish American Historic SiteAssociation, mszę jubileuszowąZjednoczenia połączono zobchodami MiesiącaDziedzictwa Polskiego.

Mszę św. odprawił ks. Jan Palkowski. Ołatrz główny ozdabiały dwa piękne koszekwiatów w kolorach jesieni. Ołtarze Najśw. Serca Pana Jezusa i Matki Boskiej zostałyozdobione koszami czerwonych róż i białych chryzatnem z okazji 140-tej rocznicyZPRKA - ufundowanymi przez Dystrykt #3 ZPRKA.

Dzieci, ubrane w kolorowe stroje ludowe, śpiewały w czasie mszy pieśni, harcerzestali na warcie honorowej. Śpiewowi przewodziła Maria Kolenda. Dary mszalne doołtarza przynieśli pp. Drobot.

Ks. Palkowski wygłosił piękną mowę na temat naszej organizacji, zaznajamiającwszystkich z początkami i działalnością ZPRKA. Wspomniał, że Zjednoczeniepowstało, aby pomagać nowo przybyłym Polakom, którzy osiedlili się w okolicy i żeZPRKA pomogło wybudować parafię św. Wojciecha. Dodał, że gdyby nie ludzie tacyjak członkowie ZPRKA, kościół nigdy nie zostałby wzniesiony, że Zjednoczenie masilną pozycję i powinniśmy być dumni z naszej historii i naszej organizacji, któradziała prężnie przez 140 lat. Ks. Palkowski przedstawił następnie pp. Josepha i JudyDrobot całemu zgromadzeniu. Po wyjściu z kościoła grupa członków ZPRKAustawiła się na schodach kościelnych, aby zrobić pamiątkowe zdjęcie, tak jak toczynili ci, którzy byli przed nami - stając przed kościołem św. Wojciecha - napamiątkę dla przyszłych pokoleń.

Wielu uczestników mszy udało się do sali parafialnej na obchody dożynkowe.Przygotowany posiłek kusił wspaniałymi zapachami. Polsko Amerykańskie CentrumKultury przygotowało stoisko z różnego rodzaju pamiątkami z Polski, które możnabyło zakupić. Czas umilała kapela grająca polki.

Prezes KPA na Wsch. PA Michael Blichasz oraz dyr. Centrum Kultury TheresaRomanowski, którzy są również członkami ZPRKA, poprosili pp. Drobotów opoprowadzenie poloneza oraz prezesa Drobota o podzielenie się z zebranymi swoimtalentem i śpiew.

Na uroczystości przybyły delegacje zAkron, Lorain i Toledo, obecna byładyrektorka Dystr. #5 Joan Sylak, przyjechałydelegacje z Detroit, MI i Buffalo, NY.Obecni również byli członkowie zarząduZPRKA: prezes Joseph A. Członkowie Dystryktu i goście, zebralisię w parafii św. Augustyna na południowejstronie miasta Milwaukee w Wisconsin.

Ks. Ronald Kotecki, administrator jestrównież członkiem ZPRKA i bardzodobrze zna naszą braterską organizację.Zwracając się do wiernych, powiedziałwiele dobrego o ZPRKA i o wkładzieZjednoczenia w życie polskiejspołeczności w Stanach Zjednoczonych wciągu ostatnich 140 lat.

Poproszona o kilka słów wiceprezeskaZPRKA Anna Sokołowski, sprawiła, żewszyscy członkowie ZPRKA poczuli siębardzo dumni. Mówiła z olbrzymiąmiłością, wiedzą i dumą - nie tylko onaszej organizacji, ale również o Kościele inaszym kraju.

Uroczystości zaszczyciło swojąobecnością kilka osób ze Związku Polek wAmeryce i Kongresu PoloniiAmerykańskiej. Dziękujemy im zawsparcie, jakiego nam udzielili przy okazjinaszego wspaniałego jubileuszu.

BUDYNEK ZPRKA WPISANY DOKRAJOWEGO REJESTRU ZABYTKÓW!

Zabytkowy budynek z 1913roku, w którym mieszczą sięgłówne biura ZjednoczeniaPolskiego Rzymsko Katolickiegow Ameryce oraz Muzeum Polskiew Ameryce, został oficjalnieuznany za zabytek historyczny i zdniem 2 stycznia 2013 rokuwpisany do Krajowego RejestruZabytków w USA.

Pomimo, iż budynekprzeszedł w czasie swojej 100-letniej historii liczne renowacje i remonty, zachownezostało jednak wiele oryginalnych elementów architektonicznych i zdobniczych.Budynek również nadal spełnia funkcję, do której został przeznaczony, co także byłouwzględniane przy rozpatrywaniu wniosków o wpis do rejestru.

Okolica, w której budynek był wzniesiony, była na początku XX wiekucentrum życia chicagowskiej Polonii. Tu, w pobliżu pierwszej polskiej parafii (św.Stanisława Kostki), miały swoje główne siedziby największe polskie organizacje, tuznajdowało się Kolegium św. Stanisława, szkoły średnie Holy Trinity i Holy Family,szpital Nazaretanek, polskie drukarnie i różnego rodzaju sklepy.

Budynek ZPRKA i MPA to “żywe” świadectwo początków osadnictwapolskiego i działalności Polaków w Chicago.
