Tuesday, 26 th March 2019 Week 9 Term 1 Busy Sporting times at Narrabri West We are now in a busy time with PSSA sporting events (see page 5 & 6 for details). These do cause some disruption to normal routines but they are an important and valuable part of school life, as they give children the opportunity to represent their school and extend their abilities. Being a member of a representative school sporting team is a highly sought after honour and all students take great pride in the opportunity to not only represent the school, but also to test their talents against students from other schools. Representing Narrabri West in sport is also a privilege that has to be earned through appropriate behaviour and attitude at school. Narrabri West is committed to our involvement in sport. Teachers work extremely hard to prepare school teams, often in their own time (after school or at lunch times) and we thank them for their efforts. Thank you also to the many parents who assist or support our teams. Feature Article

In our last newsletter we shared information on learning goals and success criteria. This week we look at how we use effective and strategic questioning to enhance student learning in a thinking classroom. This is another in our series of articles explaining how we teach at Narrabri West.

Effective questioning is one way teachers can seek evidence to establish where students are in their learning, and is therefore the result of careful planning.

Specifically, effective questioning provides teachers with the opportunity to identify and correct misunderstandings and gaps in knowledge, as well as identify the need for extension work for those students whose knowledge and skills base demand it.

This kind of questioning provides information about student knowledge, understanding and skills. These then inform the teacher's planning and selection of teaching strategies to move students from where they are, to where they need to go.

Some key features:

1. In terms of student behaviour, effective questioning encourages students to:

• listen actively; • speak; • take turns; and • be actively involved with learning.

If the classroom culture does not encourage 'hands up', but rather emphasises that everyone is expected to think and be ready to answer any question, students are more likely to be involved with the learning.

2. The asking of questions is a deliberate, planned activity.

3. Provide students with time to think after asking a question.

4. A critical factor in enhancing the strategic effectiveness of questions is teacher receptiveness. The teacher's positive response to both correct and wrong answers is essential.

5. The strategic effectiveness of questioning is further enhanced by:

• Moving around the room to make sure questions are more likely to be evenly distributed. Other ways of making sure questions are evenly distributed include allowing students to talk to each other about a question, asking everyone to write down an

answer and then reading out a selected few, or giving students a choice of possible answers and having a vote on the correct option. All of these tactics increase student participation.

• Posing one question at a time. Asking a string of questions, particularly without any pause, is confusing.

• Providing prompt questions such as 'Why do you think that?', 'Can you tell me more about …?' or 'Is it possible that ...?'

• Posing fewer, well-chosen questions is more strategic as an assessment for learning strategy.

6. When planning, teachers need to decide the purpose of their questions and then select the most appropriate type of questions for that purpose.

Strategic and effective questioning is a skill that our teachers have been working on in their professional learning time.

Striving for your PB (Personal Best) I’d like to remind our students that we are a school that strives for personal bests. This includes all aspects of life; in our schoolwork, our extra-curricular pursuits, our appearance and of course, our manners.

If you are being the best that you can be, no-one can ever ask more of you. The question you should all ask yourself each day is: “Am I really trying to be the best person I can be?”

I hope every one of our students can honestly look in the mirror and say confidently....yes! If not...what are you waiting for? Make a positive difference to a life...yours!!

Inspiring learning at Narrabri West On a daily basis there are many examples of inspiring teaching and learning occurring at Narrabri West.

There is no doubt that the way we have our school set up again this year is having a positive impact on student learning and the feedback from teachers is that it is really making a difference to the learning and academic growth of our students. Well done everybody.

Learner Led Conferences starting soon All teachers will be coordinating Learner Led conferences over the last two weeks of term. These are a very important part of our reporting process and we urge all families to take the opportunity to work with their child’s teacher by attending these.

An important component of each child’s learning journey is to support them in taking responsibility for their learning. Research tells us that things like goal setting, learning goals, success criteria and most importantly

Page 3: Narrabri West

3

feedback, are essential to developing independent learners.

Learner Led Conferences are a strategy to develop in each student this sense of responsibility for their learning. They encourage them to think of themselves as the drive of their learning journey, where they want to go, what they need to do and how they will know when they have arrived. The more opportunities we give our students to reflect on their learning, through sharing their understandings, the better.

In Learner Led Conferences the student is actively involved in the reporting process. The purpose of the conference is to:

• Have students take responsibility for their own learning and be the centre of the conference;

• Celebrate growth in each child’s learning and achievements;

• Teach self-evaluation and self-reflection skills; • Help direct future learning; and • Allow parents, students and teachers to

celebrate success together!

These are an important opportunity to see how your child is progressing and they are looking forward to showing you all of their clever and exciting learning.

Tell Them From Me student survey This term, our school, like many others in the state, will again participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

More information about the survey is available at:

http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

The survey is an opportunity for our students in Years 4, 5 and 6 to provide our school with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school.

The survey is confidential and school staff will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. It is conducted online and will usually take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 18th March and 29th March. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

A consent form about the survey has been sent home with students.

Easter Family and Friends Day Friday 12th April is our Easter Fun Day. All children are looking forward to you joining us and we hope to see many visitors to our school.

We will start the day with our annual Easter Tabloid which is always a lot of fun with some very interesting and unusual activities for everyone to enjoy. These are always great opportunities for children to mix together. Visitors are invited to watch the fun and games – or join in if you wish!

This will be followed by lunch, and families are invited to enjoy a picnic lunch in the school grounds.

If you would like to order lunch from the canteen, please use the special Meal Deal notes. This offer closes on Tuesday 9th April.

There will only be limited food available from our canteen, so it is necessary to place an order either before the day or before 9:15 that morning to avoid disappointment, as well as to assist the canteen staff.

The full program for the day is:

9:30 – 10:30 3-6 Easter Tabloid & K-2 Easter activities in the classroom

10:30 – 11:30 P-2 Easter Tabloids & 3-6 Easter activities in the classroom

11:30 – 12:20 Lunch

12:30 - 1:30 Bronze Assembly

WANTED - a holiday home for Westy Bear! If you would like to have Westy Bear stay with you for the holidays, please write a letter to Mrs Keys before Friday 12th April and tell Westy what you will be doing, so that he can decide who he would like to visit.

ANZAC Day March 2019 This year ANZAC Day will be in the holidays – Thursday 25th April. Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 who would like to march with the school can attend and we are hoping for a great turn out. Please wear full formal (blue) uniform if you are marching. Don’t forget your wide brimmed hat and a water bottle.

Children should assemble in Barwan St (opposite Narrabri P.S) at 10.10am and be ready to move off at 10.30am. The service will commence at the RSL Club at 11.00am.

We would like all of our School Captains and Prefects, Student Councillors and as many students as possible to attend and demonstrate our schools support for our country’s servicemen and women. Our school captains Joel and Tayla will lay a wreath on our behalf.

Please note the following dates: • Monday 15th April to Friday 26th April - holidays. • Monday 29th April - School Development Day -

students DO NOT attend. • Tuesday 30th April - students return to school.

Please Note: Monday 29th April is a designated school development day for Term 2. The purpose of this day is to improve the learning outcomes of students by:

• Providing targeted professional learning activities aligned to school improvement targets and Department of Education priorities; and

• Enabling whole school planning and enhancing teacher quality, school leadership and management practices.

On this day we will be continuing with our ongoing professional learning based on our growth as educators and will also undertake some further planning for Term Two.

Have a wonderful break with your children and we look forward to seeing you at our school events over the next week.

Harmony Day On Thursday 21st March, The School Captains and Prefects represented our school at the ‘Eat Street Maitland – A Taste of Harmony’ event at the Narrabri Post Office Lawn to celebrate Harmony Day.

There were a lot of people there celebrating our cultural diversity and promoting the message that ‘EVERYONE BELONGS’.

Lunch was provided and plenty to choose from including McDonalds, Subway, BBQ, Chinese, Curries, Fruit and cake.

We would like to say thank you to the organisers for a great time.

Class News - Stage Two Years 3 and 4 have had a busy and exciting term and there is still more to come!

In English, students have studied the text "The Great Kapok Tree" by Lynne Cherry. This text is about a man that has come to chop down a Kapok tree, within the Amazon Rainforest. When he lay down to rest, the creatures that inhabit the tree come to whisper in his ear, begging him to spare their home. The students in Stage Two have investigated the features of informative texts and written their own text about an animal that lives in the Great Kapok Tree. Mrs Keys, Mrs Phillips, Mr Geddes and Miss Dunmall have been really impressed with the quality and effort the students have placed into publishing their writing into "story hangers". Now, the students are writing a persuasive letter to try and convince the man to not chop down the tree. We are learning that persuasive texts need convincing arguments.

In Mathematics, we have been keeping a Journal of our learning so far and are really excited about sharing these with parents in our Learner-Led Conferences in Weeks 10 and 11. In the journal, students record and demonstrate what they learned at the end of each unit. We have been implementing technology in our everyday classroom work this year, including Mathematics. Students are really engaged with using Prodigy. This is an online Maths resource that develops mathematical skills and knowledge learnt in class. We have also learnt about Google classrooms and learnt how to create a Google slide to share our learning about animals in the rainforest.

In Creative and Practical Arts we have looked at the work of the artist Pablo Picasso. Each lesson within this unit has focused on the works of Picasso and explored different media and techniques.

Fundamental Movement skills are the focus of the Physical Education program. Students have been focusing on the skills of catch, over arm throw, skip and two handed strike.

In Science we are investigating things that have been melted or frozen, heated or cooled. The students are exploring how solids or liquids are influenced by temperature and are experiencing the way items from their everyday lives can change.

We are looking forward to Learner Led Conferences in weeks 10 and 11. These are an invaluable opportunity to learn how your child is progressing. The students are looking forward to showing and explaining to you all of the clever and exciting things they have been learning.

Class News - Stage Three Stage 3 students have settled straight into their learning this term as well as taking the opportunity to participate in the many sporting opportunities that have been made available to them so far. They are to be commended on their positive attitude towards learning. Personal Development and Health lessons have encouraged students to develop and maintain positive relationships and this has been evident in classrooms and on the playground.

We have some very persuasive students in Stage 3 and they are getting even more persuasive as they learn how to use persuasive devices and language features in English. They have also written some excellent informative texts about Antarctica.

Year 5 students have been learning how to read, order and sequence 6 digit numbers and how to interpret and compare angles. In the last few weeks, we have been learning how to multiply two-digit by one digit numbers and how to multiply decimals. We have also been learning about factors and multiples.

“Learning Maths has made us much smarter and this will help us get successful adult jobs” Wyatt Lawler and Angus Lamb

“Year 6 have been learning how to divide. Some specific ways to divide are: splitting the dividend to divide dollars and cents, using factors to divide by 2 digit numbers and using equivalent expressions to divide. Once you get the hang of it, you fly through it.” Lachie Michell

The masterpieces students have created after experimenting with colour, shapes and lines in visual arts look amazing. They will also be getting their hands dirty with some clay, paint and wire sculptures.

“Stage 3 have been manipulating wire to create a person doing something, eg, fishing, surfing, playing netball, dancing, sky diving, cooking, farming and lots more. We had an Art Exhibition to share our sculptures with all of the Stage 3 students. I have enjoyed Art because we have been able to go ‘outside of the box’.” Jessie Simpson.

‘What’s the matter?’ This is what students are trying to find out in Science as they investigate properties of different types of matter. They have enjoyed working collaboratively and performing experiments to develop criteria so they could categorise liquids, solids and gases.

“We have been conducting experiments to investigate all types of matter, that is, gases, liquids and solids. When we were exploring the different properties of gases we had a variety of meaningful discussions and learnt numerous facts.” Imogen Megalokonomos, Chelsie Smith, Jayde Goodhew

Rainforests is another topic students have researched and they have displayed what they have learnt by creating a foldable.

In Technology Stage 3 have been learning how to use Google Classroom. The students have created a Google Docs document and a Google Slides document. This week we have been learning how to access NAPLAN Online tests and have completed some demonstration tests. Next term we will begin our lessons on Coding using the online program Code.org.

Our School Captains and Prefects have displayed excellent leadership skills this term as they have kept the Narrabri Community informed about what’s happening at the West in their MAX FM broadcasts.

Students and teachers are looking forward to discussing what students have been learning and the goals they

have achieved or are trying to achieve at our Learner Led Conferences in Weeks 10 and 11.

As Billie Tout says, “It has been a really good year so far and we have more to come.”

School News & Reminders Newsletter changes This newsletter is the last paper copy before we go paperless. Next term our newsletter will be available to download from the school website and Skoolbag or we can email it to you. Some paper copies will be available from the office.

Voluntary Contributions Thank you to those families who have paid their voluntary contributions. As we have previously announced, this year we are purchasing additional

laptops for the school with all money received from school fees. This way your payment of the fees will directly benefit your child, and every other child, in the school.

End of day procedures Parents are reminded to please be aware of children and other cars in the car park when dropping off and collecting children. Please note that the area on either side of the large industrial waste bins is a NO PARKING zone and this is clearly signposted. Vehicles SHOULD NOT park in this area before or after school. The collection truck comes at any time and also our cleaners need access as well, particularly around 3:30pm which is when they are emptying the school bins. VEHICLES SHOULD NOT PARK BEHIND CARS IN THE STAFF CAR PARKING AREA. Although our staff work long hours, on occasion they need to leave at 3.30pm to attend appointments or meetings. This is also not a legal parking area.

Students who are being picked up at the end of the school day are supervised under the K-2 shelter and we ask that all parents collect their children from this area.

School Jackets Even though the weather is still warm, now is the time to purchase your school jackets so they will be on hand for the cold weather. Jackets cost $50, are in stock and are available at the front office. Please come into the office with your child to try one on for size.

Spending money at school Our younger students are sometimes unsure of the procedures around spending money at the canteen. The following rules are stressed, especially with our Kindergarten students, to minimise problems:

• don’t ask others to buy things for you; • don’t take money that belongs to others; • don’t give your money to anyone except the

helpers in the canteen; • don’t buy for others; and • don’t share food or money.

Annual School Report Our Annual School Report for 2018 is now available on our website.

http://www.narrabriw-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/our-school/annual-school-report

If you would like a copy and do not have access to the internet, please contact the school and we can provide one for you.

Page 8: Narrabri West

Compiling these reports to a set format is a requirement of every school in NSW and considerable time and effort goes into preparing ours each year. Please take the time to read it carefully.

Expression of Interest Year 7 2020 All Year 6 students will have received an Expression of Interest form for Year 7 2020. This is the first stage of enrolment to high school. Narrabri High School is the local high school. Please complete the form and return it (if you have not already done so), to the school office before Friday 29th March.

Please note: If your child is not attending Narrabri High School, the Expression of Interest still needs to be returned with your choice of high school indicated.
