1.0 Purpose of Annex E2

The purpose of this annex is to document the US Payload Unique Operations Nomenclature (OpNom). This information is used to provide a payload unique abbreviation and acronym list to the crew and to document the OpNom for each piece of payload hardware that is stowed or installed on-orbit. This document consists of sections containing OpNom for the payload names, acronyms and abbreviations used by the payloads, hardware that is not in the Mission Integration Database Application System (MIDAS) and the reason it is not in MIDAS, OpNom for generic part numbers, procedural nomenclature, and stowed and installed hardware that is in MIDAS.

1.1 Configuration Management of this Annex

All changes to this annex are submitted for approval by the United States Payload Operations Data File Control Board (US PODFCB). Once the US PODFCB has approved the change, than a CR is submitted to the Operations Data File Control Board (ODFCB) in Workflow to change this annex.

1.2 Mandatory Use of Acronyms/AbbreviationsWithin the acronym and abbreviation section, if an item has a ** indication than that Acronym or Abbreviation should always be used for procedures and labeling instead of the full name.

1.3 Use of ***

Throughout this document, if an item has a *** indication than that OpNom was neither approved nor disapproved by the Crew Office. Late manifested hardware that was already labeled before OpNom approval was requested will have this designation since in some cases the crew office felt that the name could have been more descriptive if the label could have been changed. If this hardware is later modified, OpNom should be readdressed.

1.4 Waivers

If an OpNom does not comply with the OpNom requirements and guidelines in SSP 50254, then a waiver must be submitted. Refer to the SSP 50254 main volume (section 8.0) or the OpNom web page for more information on submittal of OpNom waivers. OpNom waivers are approved by the USPODFCB and the ODFCB. A permanent waiver is designated within this document by using the word waiver followed by the waiver number enclosed in square brackets. If an item in either section has a waiver, no other payload can use that nomenclature unless a waiver is requested for their payload use.

2.0 Utilization of OpNom

This section discusses the uses of the Operations Nomenclature in different types of operations products.

2.1 Use in Procedures

The OpNom, as documented in SSP 50254 main volume and this annex, shall be used in US Payload manual procedures.

2.2 Use in Displays

As stated previously, it is important for the operation of ISS that products used in real-time operations use the same nomenclature. Because much of the onboard and ground commanding is currently done through computer displays, it is important that these displays also use the same nomenclature.

In many displays, the amount of information that needs to be conveyed will prevent the entire OpNom from being displayed under each item on the display. On displays with large amounts of data, icons, buttons, etc., the OpNom approved abbreviations can be used in space limiting situations.

2.3 Use in Labeling

SSP 50254, Operations Nomenclature, main volume, and SSP 57000 Appendix C (or comparable document) shall be followed for labeling.

2.4 Use in Commands and TelemetryCommands and telemetry shall adhere to OpNom requirements however, the actual commands and telemetry are housed within the Mission Build Facility (MBF) and are provided to the operations community as a product called Standard Out. All commands that will go through the U.S. Command and Control Software (CCS) will be housed within the MBF. For more information on command and telemetry processing, see the ISS Command and Telemetry Team (ICATT) Generic Guidelines (JSC-28100).

2.5 Relationship between Automated Procedures and the MBFWhen developing U.S. Payload Operations Data File (PODF) Timeliner automated procedures, the user shall use the User Interface Language (UIL) Specification Document (SSP 30539) for the specific syntax that must be used. The commands and telemetry that must be used within the Timeliner automated procedures are provided in the Standard Out product that comes from the MBF.

3.0 Payload Names

The table below contains the OpNom for the payload, a description of the payload name and the facility affiliation for the payload. The first column in Table 3.0 is the OpNom for the payload. This OpNom shall be what is used to refer to the payload in all operations products except as defined in section 3.1. The second column is a description of the payload if the payload name is an acronym. The third column associates the payload with a facility, if appropriate.

3.1 Payload Names for Planning Products

When possible, payload names used in planning products will be the OpNom for the payload as defined in Table 3.0 of this document. The planning products have space limitations therefore, in some cases the payload names must be shortened to provide the crew with the most descriptive activity title. In those cases, the OpNom provided in this table shall be used in place of the approved payload OpNom in Table 3.0.

4.0 Acronyms and Abbreviations

This section contains the payload unique acronyms and abbreviations needed for front panels, displays, and hardware labels because of space constraints. These acronyms and abbreviations should only be used in space constraint situations. It is important to spell out words instead of using acronyms or abbreviations whenever possible to facilitate understanding by the crew.

If an item has a ** indication than it is mandatory to use the acronym or abbreviation in procedures and on labels.

If an item has a waiver (designated with the word waiver and the waiver number), no other payload can use that nomenclature unless a waiver is requested for their payload use.

Table 4.0 has a column for the acronym or abbreviation, the meaning of the acronym or abbreviation and the payload name (including the facility if not EXPRESS or standalone). This table is alphabetized by the abbreviation and acronym column.

5.0 Generic Operations Nomenclature and Part Numbers

To make it easier for the payload developers, this section was created to track the OpNom for parts that will be manifested frequently and have an established pattern for a part number or a generic OpNom for parts that need to be named consistently throughout the life of the payload. Two tables are used to represent the two categories of items in this section. Both tables consist of the payload name (including the facility if not EXPRESS or standalone), the OpNom, and the part number.

Table 5.1 consists of those parts that require a generic OpNom. The payload developer will have to initiate a change to define the variables. When the new OpNom is submitted that follows the pattern defined by the generic OpNom, the OpNom will be approved without a formal review by the mandatory reviewers since the pattern for the OpNom has already been approved and the payload developer is just defining the variables within the OpNom. The OpNom will be added to MIDAS or the appropriate hardware table in section 6. The variables are identified in the comments column in the table. An OpNom in this table can also have a generic part number and if so will not be duplicated in Table 5.2.

Table 5.2 consists of OpNom that will have a part number that changes over the payload life but the OpNom is always the same. As new dash numbers or part numbers that follow the defined pattern appear in MIDAS, this table is used to populate the OpNom without the payload developer having to submit a change for each unique part number. These part numbers are registered in a generic manner.

6.0 Hardware not in MIDAS

OpNom is sometimes needed for items that will not be tracked in MIDAS or IMS. In this case, the hardware is documented in one of the tables in this section. Examples of the type of hardware in this section are: a) items referred to in procedures that are installed in a higher assembly that is tracked in MIDAS, b) items created on-orbit that will only need to be tracked in IMS, c) items not yet manifested for payloads that aren’t ready to order labels, d) hardware for early increments that was not tracked within MIDAS to the same level as currently tracked in MIDAS, and e) hardware launched on a non-US launch vehicle that was not tracked in MIDAS to the same level as if launched on the shuttle. Whatever the reason for not being in MIDAS, the OpNom needs to be documented and the OpNom should be used when referring to the hardware item.

Each table includes the payload name (including the facility if not EXPRESS or standalone), the OpNom, part number, and the reason not in MIDAS.

Table 6.1 contains the hardware that is created on-orbit or that is installed in a higher assembly but not manifested as an individual item. Hardware in this table may have an N/A part number. Hardware that was launched on a non-US launch vehicle and is still on-board will be in this table.

Table 6.2 contains hardware that is not yet on a manifest and the payload developer does not yet need to order labels. This table also includes hardware items with a TBD part number. Once the hardware items are in MIDAS, the OpNom will be populated in MIDAS and the next revision of this document will have the item removed from this table. The MIDAS report that will be posted to the web may be updated at a greater frequency than this section so a part in this table may actually be in MIDAS for some time before this section is updated. The Reason Not in MIDAS column will contain, at a minimum, the ECR number that was approved by the PODFCB that introduced the addition of this part to the annex. The ECR number is included since the PODFCB levies an action to put the OpNom in MIDAS.

7.0 Procedural Nomenclature

There is a subset of OpNom that is defined as procedural nomenclature (PNom). PNom refers to reconfigurable hardware. PNom is approved following the same process as OpNom. Parts that are in MIDAS will have the PNom documented in MIDAS. Parts that are not in MIDAS will be documented in this section.

8.0 Hardware In MIDAS

MIDAS is used for manifesting hardware and for generation of label orders for labels with barcodes. MIDAS data will also be used to populate the Inventory Management System (IMS). The approved OpNom by part number is documented officially in the MIDAS database. This section is a report directly out of MIDAS. It is in an Excel spreadsheet located on the Training and Crew Operations Group web page ( https://payloads1.msfc.nasa.gov/station/fd35/index.htm ) under the OpNom tab and the ODF OpNom web page (http://mod.jsc.nasa.gov/do3/ODF/OpNom/index.html). This spreadsheet will be updated whenever several parts are added to MIDAS. It will not necessarily be updated at the same time as the remainder of this annex.
